Volume by volume, I'm making my way through Urasawa's Master Keaton series. A marked difference from his Monster is the episodic nature of this series. In the vast majority of its chapters, Keaton's adventures are stand-alone and can be appreciated outside of the context of the others. In some way, that's a strength of this title. On the other hand, I tend to appreciate more the longer-form stories involving Keaton, the ones that last two, three, or more segments. -

Asian Extreme as Cult Cinema: The Transnational Appeal of Excess and Otherness Jessica Anne Hughes BA English and Film Studies, Wilfrid Laurier University MA Film Studies, University of British Columbia A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2016 School of Communications and Arts Hughes 2 Abstract This thesis investigates the way Western audiences respond to portrayals of excess and otherness in Japanese Extreme cinema. It explores the way a recent (2006-2016) cycle of Japanese Splatter (J-Splatter) films, including The Machine Girl (Noboru Iguchi, 2008) and Tokyo Gore Police (Yoshihiro Nishimura, 2008), have been positioned as cult due to their over-the-top representations of violence and stereotypes of Japanese culture. Phenomenological research and personal interviews interrogate Western encounters with J-Splatter films at niche film festivals and on DVD and various online platforms through independent distributors. I argue that these films are marketed to particular Western cult audiences using vocabulary and images that highlight the exotic nature of globally recognised Japanese cultural symbols such as schoolgirls and geisha. This thesis analyses J-Splatter’s transnational, cosmopolitan appeal using an approach informed by the work of Ernest Mathijs and Jamie Sexton, Matt Hills, Henry Jenkins, and Iain Robert Smith, who read the relationship between Western audiences and international cult cinema as positive and meaningful cultural interactions, demonstrating a desire to engage in more global experiences. The chapters in this thesis use textual analysis of J-Splatter films and case studies of North American and Australian film festivals and distribution companies, which include interviews with festival directors and distributors, to analyse the nature of the appeal of J- Splatter to Western audiences. -

La prise de son est belle. Avec sa naïveté assumée, ce conte musical sans complaisance nous fait traverser la société japonaise dans laquelle Mozart et bien d’autres compositeurs occupent une place de choix. Prof. Toshio Miyake Laureando Alessio Pepe Matricola 841037 Anno Accademico 2016 / 2017 要旨 1989 年、日本の映画監督、塚本晋也の初長編映画「鉄男」がローマ 国際ファンタスティック映画祭でグランプリを取った。当時、アメリ カとヨーロッパでの日本映画への興味はもう薄れて来るところであっ た。その中で、塚本の受賞は映画監督としてのキャリアを積んだだけ でなく、日本のSF映画、特にサイバーパンクというサブジャンルに も非常な影響を与えた。そして「鉄男」が次第にサイバーバンクのフ ァンの間で話題になるに連れ、塚本はカルト映画監督として注目を浴 びるようになった。それはなぜであろうか。答えを挙げるために、と りあえずオリエンタリズムという現象についての説明をする必要があ ると思う。 オリエンタリズムとは、フランスとイギリスをはじめ、ヨーロッパ だけでなくアメリカまで展開されたアカデミックな思想で、世界を 「西洋」と「東洋」に分けて考える考え方である。この「東洋」とは アジアの全ての国の特徴が一つの単語で画一化された概念である。 「東洋」に対し、オリエンタリズムは難解でエキゾチックなイメージ があり、「西洋」の人々から見ると「東洋」の社会は「西洋」に較べ それほど文明化されていないと考える思想である。 面白いことに、この考え方は「西洋」だけでなく、日本でも、特に 日本の映画や小説などで時々見られる。例えば、日本人の小説家と映 画監督の作品にはアメリカ人などが日本に対し用いるステレオタイプ が出て来ることもある。この場合では「セルフ・オリエンタリズム」 とも呼ばれる。映画と言えば、「日活」の「寿司タイフーン」という 部局で作られている映画はいつも過激で、日本の文化の中で「西洋」 の人々に魅力を発散するさまざまな要素が含まれている。 塚本の作品からも「セルフ・オリエンタリズム」の要素が見られる。 サイバーパンクの場合はもちろん、別のジャンルの映画でも「鉄男」 で使われた過激なスタイルが出て来るのが一つの例である。塚本はイ ンタービューでこのスタイルが漫画の影響を受けたと言った。 1 しかし、時々「セルフ・オリエンタリズム」に抵抗する傾向もみら れる。例えば、柾悟郎の小説「ヴィーナス・シティ」(1992 年)では、 リドリー・スコットの「ブレードランナー」(1982 年)のようなアメ リカで作られたサイバーパンクの映画に現れるオリエンタリズムに対 し批判している声もある。 この論文の目標は塚本の作品の中で、柾悟郎の同じようにサイバー パンクのオリエンタリズム、いわゆる「テクノ・オリエンタリズム」 に対し批判している映画があるかどうかについて研究することである。 研究を進めるために、第一に、日本の最近の映画と国際映画祭につい て説明する必要がある。第二に、オリエンタリズムの定義をはじめ 「セルフ・オリエンタリズム」の現象を紹介し、多数な日本人の映画 -
The Barefoot Gen Anime in the Aftermath of The
ISSN 2280 9481 Orienti/Occidenti Facing the Nuclear Issue in a “mangaesque” Way: The Barefoot Gen anime In the aftermath of the earthquake on the 11th March, 2011, and especially the nuclear power plant accident, questions have rekindled about the critical role of popular media such as manga and anime in contemporary Japanese society. This current has manifested itself, among other things, in revisiting the A-bomb manga Hadashi no Gen (Barefoot Gen, Keiji Nakazawa, 1973-87; below: GEN). GEN was, arguably, the very first Japanese comic to cross language borders thanks to activists of the peace movement1. In Japan, it saw an exceptional acknowledgement already in the 1980s, entering school libraries. However, responses within Japan towards the Fukushima meltdowns suggest that GEN did not contribute to raising a critical awareness about the dangers of nuclear power plants on that earthquake-ridden archipelago. The same applies to the two animated film adaptations, released in 1983 and 19862. Since the 1980s, GEN has seen its canonization related to A-bomb literature. This facilitated a primary focus on representation and contents. In addition to peace messages critics have, for example, appreciated the visibility of the Korean minority, as epitomized by Gen’s neighbour Mr. Pak3. Such emphasis on ideological readings by critical intellectuals may have contributed to diminishing GEN’s initially subversive potential for younger consumers. As such, GEN can serve as 148 a good example of how popular media texts work, particularly in contemporary Japan, the (almost) uncontested “empire of manga”4. Artists have been offering stories which hold the potential for political readings, but consumers do not necessarily actualize this potential. -
