Volume by volume, I'm making my way through Urasawa's Master Keaton series. A marked difference from his is the episodic nature of this series. In the vast majority of its chapters, Keaton's adventures are stand-alone and can be appreciated outside of the context of the others. In some way, that's a strength of this title. On the other hand, I tend to appreciate more the longer-form stories involving Keaton, the ones that last two, three, or more segments. And there are instances of that Volume by volume, I'm making my way through Urasawa's Master Keaton series. And there are instances of that kind of pacing in this volume. This is one of the reasons why, while I am enjoying these Master Keaton volumes, I am more drawn by the author's Monster storyline. I want to move on to and , but my sense of completion has me wanting to finishing up Master Keaton first. Sep 11, Miguel rated it it was amazing. Master Keaton continues to be superlative and surprising in its compelling engagement with the politics of its time and crafting spectacular character moments. This volume has a larger-than-life military arc at the end of the volume. This volume, more than most, demonstrate Urasawa's fixation on the military. Master Keaton: Volume 10 plotlines about the Gulf War and the Falklands War, Urasawa renders these conflicts and their aftermaths with a deft hand and human touch. Apr 29, Alan rated it liked it. Apr 11, Laura rated it liked it Shelves: manga. This volume was fine. The art is, of course, quite good. But the stories didn't entrance me as much as previous volumes. Still quality manga. Feb 07, Emma Barnes rated it really liked it. This volume has some quite long military focused stories in this volume rather than some shorter stories feature in previous volumes. Apr 12, S. The SAS stories also provide commentary on relatively recent military conflicts. That makes it the longest of the Master Keaton tales thus far, but by no means does it drag. The setting is Iraq right after its invasion of Kuwait. Iraq has taken British citizens hostage, and the British government sends Keaton in after Richard, an old classmate who happens to be a member of the royal family. Also part of the operation is Nasr, a Pakistani-British agent, who has his own set of unique skills. The David Bobbid character is kind of freaky, especially his appearance, but the story does Master Keaton: Volume 10 home how combat trauma manifests in various ways. Extras include the first pages of Chapter 1 in color and a sound effects glossary. I found the first third of the book lackluster and, at times, overly confusing. I was wondering if the authors Master Keaton: Volume 10 exaggerating the scale of the conflict to give Great Britain a Vietnam-like war, complete with many tales of soldier trauma. All my concerns disappeared with the last story a multipart issue narrative with Keaton carrying out a rescue mission in Iraq shortly before the Kuwait War. You've got conflicted characters, spy craft, and some great scenes highlighting Keaton's survival skills. One of my favorite Master Keaton stories. Apr 23, Helen rated it really liked it. This is one of the early works from award-winning , Naoki Urasawa. Master Keaton was first published beginning in the late s and was created and drawn by Urasawa, who co-produced the story with Hokusei Katsushika and sometimes with frequent collaborator, Takashi Nagasaki. The hero of Master Keaton is Taichi Hiraga Keatonthe something son of a Japanese zoologist and an English noblewoman and mathematician. Although Keaton is an archaeology professor, most of the series' action focuses on Keaton's job as a part-time insurance investigator. Known for his successful Master Keaton: Volume 10 unorthodox methods of investigation, Keaton's abilities are based on his Oxford education in archaeology and also on his time as a Master Keaton: Volume 10 of the Master Keaton: Volume 10 elite special forces, the S. We are entering the fourth quarter of VIZ Media's publication of this acclaimed manga and unfortunately are heading into a manga homestretch. It also offers tales of murder Master Keaton: Volume 10 odd, even eccentric plots. I would call this one of the better volumes, but most Master Keaton graphic novels are top-notch. I still recommend Master Keaton.
