Volume by volume, I'm making my way through Urasawa's Master Keaton series. A marked difference from his Monster is the episodic nature of this series. In the vast majority of its chapters, Keaton's adventures are stand-alone and can be appreciated outside of the context of the others. In some way, that's a strength of this title. On the other hand, I tend to appreciate more the longer-form stories involving Keaton, the ones that last two, three, or more segments. -

La prise de son est belle. Avec sa naïveté assumée, ce conte musical sans complaisance nous fait traverser la société japonaise dans laquelle Mozart et bien d’autres compositeurs occupent une place de choix. Marc-Olivier Dupin Directeur de France Musique Introduction Piano Forest est un long-métrage d’animation adapté d’un manga (BD japonaise) écrit par Makoto Isshiki. L’histoire s’apparente à une varia- tion sur l’apprentissage du piano entre deux adolescents talentueux : l’un fils de bonne famille, l’autre, enfant des rues, mais ayant en com- mun Mozart et Chopin. La musique est un personnage clé de ce long-métrage. -

The Barefoot Gen Anime in the Aftermath of The
ISSN 2280 9481 Orienti/Occidenti Facing the Nuclear Issue in a “mangaesque” Way: The Barefoot Gen anime In the aftermath of the earthquake on the 11th March, 2011, and especially the nuclear power plant accident, questions have rekindled about the critical role of popular media such as manga and anime in contemporary Japanese society. This current has manifested itself, among other things, in revisiting the A-bomb manga Hadashi no Gen (Barefoot Gen, Keiji Nakazawa, 1973-87; below: GEN). GEN was, arguably, the very first Japanese comic to cross language borders thanks to activists of the peace movement1. In Japan, it saw an exceptional acknowledgement already in the 1980s, entering school libraries. However, responses within Japan towards the Fukushima meltdowns suggest that GEN did not contribute to raising a critical awareness about the dangers of nuclear power plants on that earthquake-ridden archipelago. The same applies to the two animated film adaptations, released in 1983 and 19862. Since the 1980s, GEN has seen its canonization related to A-bomb literature. This facilitated a primary focus on representation and contents. In addition to peace messages critics have, for example, appreciated the visibility of the Korean minority, as epitomized by Gen’s neighbour Mr. Pak3. Such emphasis on ideological readings by critical intellectuals may have contributed to diminishing GEN’s initially subversive potential for younger consumers. As such, GEN can serve as 148 a good example of how popular media texts work, particularly in contemporary Japan, the (almost) uncontested “empire of manga”4. Artists have been offering stories which hold the potential for political readings, but consumers do not necessarily actualize this potential. -

Nick Browne JPNT 179 5/16/2013 Eyes Open, Mouths Shut: A Study oF Verbal and Sensory Storytelling in Japanese Animation Just as Japanese manga have flourished over the past halF-century, another visual medium, that oF animation or anime, 1 has blossomed alongside it. Anime, especially in the Form oF television series, have oFten been created with the intention of furthering the popularity of an existing manga series by offering fans the excitement oF seeing their Favorite story turned into moving pictures, and indeed, a series will almost inevitably receive an adaptation iF it is at all popular. Alongside this, however, exists a considerably body oF animated works adapted From other media, among them serialized textual stories reFer to as “light novels”, as well as those not adapted From any pre-existing source at all. For this paper, I sought to compare anime derived From manga to those derived From light novels and those with original screenplays, and I chose to examine whether any type more heavily used dialogue and other Forms oF “verbal” storytelling or, conversely, imagery, sound eFFects, cinematography, and other Forms oF “sensory” storytelling than the others. I found that of the three, original productions employed sensory storytelling most heavily and that those based on manga and light novels showed the same inclination for verbal storytelling, with this pattern being broken slightly by anime that functioned as loose reinterpretations rather than retellings. 1 It is actually the Japanese word For animation in general. In American English, howver, it is used almost exclusively to reFer to Japanese-made works, and this is the meaning intended in this essay. -

Sucesos históricos relevantes, decisiones económicas valientes, empresas pioneras, creadores populares y obras emblemáticas constituyen un conjunto de particularidades que tras ser cuidadosamente seleccionadas, descritas y analizadas, han permitido establecer una mejor comprensión de este popular acontecimiento sociocultural, que se ha extendido de manera global. Para este fin, la tesis que se presenta a continuación ha planteado el desarrollo de un estudio principalmente cualitativo, abordando, fundamentalmente bajo el método del análisis de contenido, los elementos y circunstancias que contribuyeron al origen de este fenómeno.
