The ABCs of Spindle Turning Important Info! • Anchor • Did you anchor the tool to the tool rest? • Pressure is towards the ground through the tool rest • Cut the the way it wants to be cut • Pressure is NOT towards the wood • Cut downhill • Bevel • Ride the bevel without cutting • Think about your bundle of straws • Cut • Let the wood come to the tool • Raise the handle until you start to take a shaving • Support the cutting area • Go for it --- GLIDE the bevel • Dance • Direction of cut AND dance (move your body)

Skew Cuts Planing Cut

•Planing • Use the safe zone •Peeling • Use the supported edge •Shoulder • No tip, this is a slicing cut •V cut • GLIDE (Ride) the bevel •Rolling • Edge at 45 degrees to direction of cut

31 Jim Echter - Copyright 2021 32 Jim Echter - Copyright 2021

Peeling Cut V - Cut • Used to make V’s and first step when cutting beads •Skew is flat on the tool rest • Used to create space for the next • This is why I don’t like oval skews tool •Edge is perpendicular to stock • Cut with point only •Ride the bevel • Do NOT come up the edge or ride the bevel by rotating slightly for •Peel like a pencil sharpener clearance • Rotate and Swing tool 1 or 2 degrees for clearance

Shoulder Cut Cutting

• Used to clean up end grain • A true bead is a semi-circle • Cleans up tenons • Tool starts horizontal and ends • Two types of cuts vertical • Plunge, rotate cut to center (POINT • Easier to cut with a spindle gouge ONLY) • You get a better finish with a skew • You plunge and shear cut up to center

Rolling Cut - Cutting a Bead Cove Cut • Cut is made with tool tip only • Usually the short point • It’s like scooping sand • Raising a fiber provides all the tool control, if you lose the raised fiber, you • Enter, turn, twist, push will cut a screw thread! • Start with handle level • Start horizontal - end vertical • Flute in neutral • Think of a handshake • Big swing of the tool handle equals a small movement of tool tip
