CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

This year Canadian Livestock Records Corporation is celebrating 100 years of service to the purebred livestock industry. At the same time the continued closure of the U.S. border to many of the breeds and species CLRC represents has presented us with challenges as difficult as any we have experienced over the past 100 years.

Your CLRC board and staff have had to deal with rising costs at the same time that we are delivering services to members that have seen a drastic reduction in revenue. I would like to thank Ron Black and the rest of the CLRC staff for the hard work and personal sacrifices they have made to help keep the CLRC a viable entity.

Over the past several years CLRC has implemented many features and services to make our registry leading edge and state of the art. I would encourage all member associations to utilize all the services offered. One of the most valuable I feel is our electronic herd book which allows members and prospective customers to search for the genetics and bloodlines they want to incorporate into their breeding programs. The Marketplace is another interactive feature that gives breeders low cost access to advertising on the Internet. Also implemented in the past year at CLRC is an Equine registry for non-purebred horses to position us for the upcoming equine identification program. As well CLRC is now providing the equine DNA testing administration for Maxxam Analytics Inc. We already offered this service through Bova-Can Laboratories for cattle DNA testing. Testing kits and forms are available from CLRC or your breed office.

As we all know, a purebred breeding program involves a commitment of time and resources far exceeding many commercial operations. With the border opening to slaughter animals, purebred operations will get some relief but it may well be some time before we can return to pre-BSE conditions. I would encourage members to offer ideas on how we can better provide services to you during these challenging times.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Directors for the time and dedication they have provided to CLRC this year.

CLRC has evolved with the Canadian purebred livestock industry over the last 100 years and will continue to adapt and change to the needs of the industry. I hope that 2005 will bring better times to all our member associations.

RAPPORT DE LA PRÉSIDENTE

Cette année, la Société canadienne d’enregistrement des animaux marque 100 années de service à l’industrie animale canadienne. En même temps, la fermeture des frontières américaines qui continuent à affecter plusieurs des races et espèces que nous représentons nous présente avec des défis aussi difficiles que ceux au cours du dernier centenaire.

Le Conseil d’administration de la SCEA et le personnel de cette dernière ont à faire face aux dépenses qui augmentent tout en essayant d’offrir un service à ses membres qui, eux, ont à faire face à un revenu qui a continue à diminuer. Je tiens à remercier Ron Black et le personnel de la SCEA pour leurs efforts et les sacrifices qu’ils endurent tout en essayant de maintenir la viabilité de la SCEA.

Au cours des dernières années, la SCEA a développé des programmes et services afin d’assurer que celle-ci est la plus moderne. Je vous encourage tous d’utiliser les services qui vous sont offerts. Un outil indispensable à l’industrie est le livre généalogique électronique. Avec ce livre, les membres et les clients intéressés peuvent rechercher les génétiques et lignées qui seraient d’avantage à leurs gestions de troupeau. Le Marché est un autre outil interactif qui offre la promotion d’entreprise économique. Un nouveau programme qui fut développé par la SCEA est le service de registre de chevaux qui ne peuvent être enregistrés dans le livre généalogique d’une association de race. Ce service sera avantageux lorsque le programme d’identification de chevaux commence. De plus, la SCEA est maintenant le centre administratif de Maxxam Analytics Inc pour tous les analyses ADN chevalines. Nous offrons déjà ce service via les laboratoires Bova-Can pour les analyses ADN bovines. Vous pouvez obtenir les trousses ADN de la SCEA ou de votre association de race.

Comme nous le savons, un programme de gestion pursang demande du temps et des ressources qui dépassent toutes opérations commerciales. Lorsque les frontières seront ouvertes aux animaux de boucherie, les entreprises pursang seront un peut alléger mais nous ne retournerons pas aux conditions pré-ESB pour un bon bout de temps. Je vous encourage tous de nous offrir vos idées concernant les services que nous pourrons vous offrir dans ces temps difficiles.

Je désire remercier le Conseil d’administration de la SCEA pour le dévouement et l’appuie donné à la SCEA au cours de cette dernière année.

La SCEA a évolué avec l’industrie animale canadienne pendant le dernier centenaire – nous continuerons à changer et améliorer afin de rencontrer les exigences de cette industrie. J’espère que l’année 2005 nous amène tous une autre chance.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

It gives me a great deal of pleasure to present to the member breed associations, and the members of those associations, this 100th Annual Report of Canadian Livestock Records Corporation. The fact that this organization has now served the Canadian livestock breeding industry for a full century can be credited, first of all, to the foresight of the Hon. Sydney Fisher, the federal Minister of Agriculture in 1905, and the leadership of the breed associations at that time, who came together to create this organization. This has been continued by the thousands of breeders who have supported their associations, and to the men and women who have given leadership and direction to the organization through the years as chairmen, directors, and general managers. In addition, there have been those many people who have served the industry on the staff of CLRC, some having been employed in excess of 50 years. Without all of these people, the organization would not have succeeded the way that it has.

The history of CLRC reveals that there have been challenging times in the past, such as the years of the Great Depression, and the periods of the two World Wars. Unfortunately, we are in the midst of another challenging period due to the ongoing effects of the BSE situation and border closures. While the total number of 80,888 registrations for 2004 is almost equal to 2003, the fact is that there were 5,306 more swine registered than in 2003, resulting in a decrease in registrations for all other associations of 14%. There were 19,103 transfers of ownership recorded, a decrease of 19% from 2003.

These statistics translate into a significant decrease in revenue both for breed associations and for CLRC. While CLRC recorded a financial loss again in 2004, the Board of Directors took several steps, particularly some adjustments in staffing, to reduce that loss as much as possible.

During 2004, the North American Lincoln Red Association and the Canadian Speckle Park Association became members of CLRC. The registry for Lincoln Reds was implemented mid- year, and the programs for Speckle Park are currently being developed. We welcome these two associations and look forward to serving their members.

I extend my appreciation to the loyal staff of CLRC for their continuing commitment, and to the members of the Board of Directors for their valuable leadership and support.

As we come to the celebration of our centennial at the Annual Meeting in Ottawa, may we both celebrate the past and look forward confidently to the next 100 years.

RAPPORT DU GÉRANT GÉNÉRAL

Je suis fier de vous présenter le 100ième rapport annuel de la Société canadienne d’enregistrement des animaux. Le fait que cette organisation ait maintenant servi l’industrie animale canadienne pour le dernier centenaire doit être d’abord crédité à l’Honorable Sydney Fisher, le Ministère de l’agriculture en 1905, et à la direction des associations de race à l’époque – sans la prévision de ces personnes, la SCEA n’existerait pas. Cette tradition continue grâce aux milliers d’éleveurs qui ont supporté leurs associations et à la direction offerte par ces personnes qui ont siégé comme présidents, directeurs et gérants. De plus, il y a les gens qui ont servi l’industrie animale comme employés de la SCEA, quelques-unes pour plus de 50 ans. Sans ces personnes, la SCEA ne serait pas le succès qu’elle est aujourd’hui.

L’historique de la SCEA nous montre des défis dans le passé – la Dépression et les périodes des deux guerres mondiales. Désormais, nous faisons face à un autre défi – la crise de l’ESB et la fermeture des frontières américaines. Tandis que les 80 888 enregistrements traités en 2004 égalent presque ceux traités en 2003, c’est un fait que 5306 porcs de plus ont été enregistrés qu’en 2003 – ceci signifie une diminution de 14% pour toutes les autres associations de race. 19 103 transferts de propriété ont été traités – une diminution de 19% selon les statistiques de 2003.

Ces statistiques signifient une diminution dans le revenu pour les associations de race ainsi que pour la SCEA. Tout en marquant une perte financière encore en 2004, le Conseil d’administration a pris plusieurs étapes, en particulier quelques modifications de personnel, pour réduire la perte autant que possible.

Au cours de l’année 2004, l ‘Association Lincoln Red de l’Amérique du Nord et la Société canadienne Speckle Park sont devenues membres de la SCEA. Le service de registre Lincoln Red est en vigueur depuis le mois de juillet et celui du Speckle Park est développement. Nous souhaitons la bienvenue à ces deux associations et nous anticipons travailler avec leurs membres.

Je tiens à remercier le personnel de la SCEA pour le dévouement et la loyauté démontrer durant ce temps difficile. J’apprécie aussi l’appuie et la direction du Conseil d’administration.

En approchant les célébrations de notre centenaire à l’assemblée annuelle à Ottawa, célébrons le passé tout en célébrant, avec confiance, le prochain centenaire.
