Darold Larson, seeking the senate seat of the late Senator Quentin Burdick, is the one behind this picture. Larson's primary goal in his campaign is to make all abor- tions illegal. Period. Larson has no other stand. He has been forcing this view since October, showing commercials of aborted fetuses during all types of broadcasts in prime time. His only warning is that his advertisements "might" not be suitable for young viewers. They are not suitable for any age group. In Larson's most recent commercial, he asks an eleven year old boy if he knows what an abortion is. The boy replies, "An abortion is the killing of a baby in the mother's womb." It then goes on to show a child covered in mucus and blood in what could only be the third trimester stillbirth, not an abortion. But, this is not the extent of Larson's advertisements. Previous ones show the effects of a vacuum abortion, with the aborted fetus shown in a bucket. Is this reasonable campaigning? Is the man going about his quest in an "appropriate" way? We don't think so. If an image is what Larson wants to create, an image he is getting, one making Pro-Lifers look like extremist Lambs of Christ, ready to kill and be killed in order to save a "questionable" life form. Larson's advertisements are shown several times throughout the day and evening, and these commercials, created by a man so seemingly con- cerned for life, can be seen by very small children, seen by adults and the elderly and also by those women who've had an abortion, some of whom could be struggling because of it. This is no way to run a campaign, no way to win Letters votes. Even those who share his view could not possibly side with a man so excessive, so radically drastic in his opinion and techniques.
