1 I OUR MISSION

Dear Friends in Mission, As the general superior from 2005-2013, it has been my privilege to be a part of the founding of CSA’s Development Ministry to sustain and support the mission of our congregation. Each of you, as our partner in ministry, has helped to keep our sisters living and working among the needy, as well as to care for our senior sisters. The mutual blessings that we have experienced are the fruit of your thoughtful generosity. With your ongoing support, you have chosen to heed God’s call to each of us to follow Jesus’ humble and loving example of service to others. Always conscious of the financial sacrifice made by our friends and supporters, the congregation continues to be conscientious stewards of its resources and your gifts. Although our sisters work or volunteer well beyond when most lay people retire, the average social security benefit lags far beyond the actual cost of caring for our senior sisters. In addition, many of our sisters work within organizations which cannot afford to pay them a regular salary or benefits. Your gifts help us to keep them in their ministries and to care for our elderly sisters. For each of you, I express my sincere gratitude through the prayer of St. Paul: “I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you, praying always with joy in my every prayer for all of you, because of your partnership for the gospel from the very first day until now. I am confident that the one who began a good work in you will continue it until the day of Christ Jesus. It is right that I should think this way about you, because I hold you in my heart.” (Philippians 1:3-7) Many Blessings,

Sister Joann Sambs, CSA General Superior, 2005-2013

Greetings to all our CSA Friends and Benefactors, Reflections on thankfulness at this time of year lead me to a deep appreciation for all of the relationships we share. Through your prayers, support, and generosity, we are able to live out the call “to respond in our own times to those whose faith life or human dignity is threatened.” Back in 1886, Mother Agnes wrote to one of our sisters: “Where there is union there is strength.” At this time over 100 years later, we continue to experience the strength of unity through our ever-deepening relationships with one another and with our families, friends, and benefactors. In this way we are empowered to share life and love in mission, ministry, and presence throughout the United States and in Latin America. What a grace beyond all telling! Recently, Francis promulgated an Apostolic Exhortation on the joy of the Gospel. His emphasis on the joy of our encounter with Christ is contagious. Commenting on the heart of the Gospel, he states, “Works of love directed to one’s neighbor are the most perfect external manifestation of the interior grace of the Spirit.” The Sisters of St. Agnes are most grateful for the love and support you show us. May God fill your hearts with gratitude and joy. In the peace and love of Christ,

Sister Jean Steffes, CSA General Superior, 2013-prestent PARTNERS IN MINISTRY I 2 Reunions Rekindle Relationships in Places We Have Loved…

When the Sisters of St. Agnes ventured from the rolling hills of Wisconsin to the plains of Indiana and the bustling boroughs of New York to embrace new missions, they initiated a legacy of Catholic education that spanned several generations. From the late 1800s through most of the 20th century, the sisters served as educators and administrators at Catholic schools in many areas throughout the United States. In each of these places, so loved by the sisters, there remains the indelible mark of their tireless dedication and inspiration. In a recent effort to reconnect with these parishes and communities where the sisters lived and served, several reunions have been hosted, celebrating their many years of service and honoring the sisters who have had such a wonderful impact upon students, their families, and co-workers. 1892-1997, and This past year, many of the sisters revisited two of the Holy Family in the parishes and schools where they ministered, enjoying Bronx from 1913- memories and stories, reminiscing, and sharing their 2004, the sisters current ministries. served in the area for more than a century. REVISITING & RECONNECTING I 4 Dear Friends of the Sisters of St. Agnes, From its humble beginnings, the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes has sent its members out to serve the community. Thanks to your help, they continue to fulfill their mission to empower, inspire, and advocate for those in need. With their vision to be community at the level of the sacred, the sisters hope to strengthen their ministries in both the United States and Nicaragua, increase resources to support the sisters in their work, and care for the elderly sisters who have given and continue to give so much in service to multiple generations. As an extension of the Sisters of St. Agnes, your ongoing financial support serves as a crucial link between the sisters and those in need. I can assure you that the sisters are most grateful for your support, are conscientious stewards of your gifts, and employ prudent fiscal policies to maximize its impact. It is likely that as a donor to the sisters, in some way, you have been touched by one or more of their ministries. I am the product of a wonderful education experience from the sisters and give thanks for the opportunities it has provided in my life. More importantly, I am the proud nephew of Sister Carol Geels, CSA, whose faith, leadership, and love of music continue to inspire me, our family, and countless others. Through her example and my opportunity to serve as a member of the CSA Development Ministry Advisory Board, I have gotten to know the sisters on a personal level. Each visit or interaction leaves me more inspired and humbled by their selfless giving. While not everyone can be present to assist the sisters in their ministries, your loyalty, prayers, and financial support help to continue to bring hope, inspiration, and care to those whom they serve. Thank you for sharing your blessings with the Sisters of St. Agnes. Sincerely,

Ken Ehinger CSA Development Advisory Board Chairperson CSA Development Advisory Board The Development Ministry of the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes exists to invite others to share in the mission of the CSA community and to cultivate resources which support their current and future initiatives, including the support of members as they engage in ministry at each stage of their lives.

7 I CELEBRATING IN THANKSGIVING YOUR GENEROSITY The Power of Your Gifts: Partners in CSA Mission &Ministries

Transforming lives for multiple generations, the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes has continually reached out to and advocated for those most vulnerable for more than 150 years —children and families living in poverty, the elderly, hospice patients and their families, and many more who turn to them in their time of need. From the day of their first vows until well into their aging years, the sisters dedicate their entire lives to serving others. As partners in CSA’s ministries in health care, education, pastoral care, and social justice, our many generous supporters help to keep the sisters living and working in rural and urban communities around the nation and in Nicaragua, as well as to care for the sisters in their aging years. While some of the sisters earn a fair market salary, many volunteer or work for minimal stipends with little or no benefits. Generous gifts to the congregation help to support the sisters as they minister in homeless and domestic abuse shelters, hospice homes, community parishes, schools, and many other charitable organizations. In addition, gifts in support of the Care of the Senior Sisters help us to provide health and spiritual care for the aging sisters who have given so much in service to others and now devote their daily prayers to the special intentions of others.

17 I PARTNERS IN STEWARDSHIP & TRANSFORMATION How Can I Become a Partner in CSA Ministries?

NOTE: CSA does not receive compensation or financial benefits from any of the organizations which it founded, funded, or currently sponsors.

Financial support of CSA ministries allows the sisters to continue to provide vital assistance to those in need, to advocate for economic justice, and to fulfill the call of service to the people of God. Gifts may be designated for one of the following: • Mother Agnes Projects • Nicaraguan Ministries • Care of the Senior Sisters • Wherever the Need is Greatest CASH OR CHECK GIFTS Cash or personal checks made payable to the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes represent one of the most common ways to Sister Fátima Ruiz support the sisters’ ministries. ONLINE GIFTS Donors may visit CSA’s website to make one-time or monthly gifts. After the secure server donation form is submitted, an electronic confirmation is emailed to the donor. NON-CASH GIFTS Assets, stocks, and bonds may be donated which also yield tax advantages to the donor (based on the market value of the donation at the time that the gift is received by CSA). HONORARY OR MEMORIAL GIFTS Donors wishing to make gifts in memory or honor of a loved one may do so by indicating the information on the donation envelope or by written communication. MATCHING GIFTS Donors may request a matching gift form from employers, complete it, and mail to CSA. Matching gifts are an excellent opportunity to increase the value of a gift. DEFERRED OR PLANNED GIFTS Planned giving donations often require assistance from a legal or financial advisor. When CSA is named as the beneficiary of an estate, bequest, trust, retirement plan, or insurance policy, the attorney/advisor preparing the legal documents should be informed that the corporate title is the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes.
