LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, suffi- cient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal anoth- er full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

Who is Father Ubald? Father Ubald has been a Roman Catholic for 25 years in the Cyangugu Diocese of southeastern Rwanda. He is a survivor of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, having lost over 80 members of his family and more than 45,000 of his parishioners. Father Ubald first came to the United States in 2009 at the invitation of Immaculée Ilibagiza, fellow genocide survivor and author of “Left

to Tell.” Since that time, he has brought the power of forgiveness and the love of Mass with the living Christ into the lives of countless individuals Healing Prayers who have been healed physically, emotionally, and spiritually. nd Thursday, February 22 6:30 p.m. Rosary 7:00 p.m. Mass

Father Ed Shea, OFM, will be with us for three nights of preaching God’s word and sharing some of his Franciscan spirit. Father Ed will preach at all of the weekend Masses, and then he’ll give three Mission Talks:

Sunday, March 11: “Open Our Eyes, Lord” This talk is a call to open our eyes, ears and hearts to the presence of God which is so very alive in our world… We are called to be a welcoming and vibrant community of believers and we can only be that if we are open to seeing and experiencing the world the way that God does.

Monday, March 12: “Blessed are the Merciful” When Francis declared the Jubilee Year of Mercy in 2015-16 that was a great invitation for us as a Church to remember that “Mercy is the Face of God” and that we are all invited to enter more deeply into God’s mercy every day of our lives. Are we a “Beatitudes” kind of people? Let’s hope so!

Tuesday, March 13 (during Mass): “All you need is LOVE” Love is the bottom line for us as Christians, as we all know, and the Bible has a lot to say about it. Starting with Deuteronomy and the “Shema” Commandment in the Old Testament, we’ll then turn to look at the very different Commandments of Love in the Gospels.

All are welcome. Please invite your family, friends and neighbors!

Franciscan Father Ed Shea is the third of eight children from St. Giles Par- ish in Oak Park. A 1974 graduate of Fenwick High School and a 1978 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Fr. Shea joined the Franciscans in 1980 and was ordained a priest in 1987. Fr. Ed has spent most of his priesthood in parish work, including four years as the priest-presider for the St. Giles Family Mass Community in Oak Park, IL and five years as the pas- tor of St. Catholic Church in Joliet, IL. He was also pastor of St. Parish, a predominantly Hispanic community in Chicago’s fa- mous Back of the Yards neighborhood. Fr. Ed has served on his Provincial Council and as Director of Vocations and Formation for the Franciscans of the Sacred Heart Province. Fr. Ed is currently stationed at St. Peter’s Church in downtown Chicago, since 2011. During the past several years he has done a good deal of itinerant preaching, in the Chicago area and be- yond; he has spent some time living and working in Teutopolis, IL, and he even went on a pilgrim- age to Tanzania, Africa! A Franciscan priest who loves to sing and tell stories, more than anything he thrives on celebrating the sacraments of the Church. A true follower of St. Francis, Father Ed finds reasons to rejoice often in the goodness of God’s presence in our world. Doodles from a Deacon...by Bill Thomas - My Solo “March for Life” I made one of those quick decisions lately which involved me flying out to Washington D.C. and participat- ing in the March for Life. I knew our diocese always sent a group there, so I checked the diocesan website and found registration closed seven weeks earlier. When I called our Re- spect Life Office I found out over 400 from our diocese were attending the March, that’s a lot of busses. Not to be discouraged, I decided to go anyway and just solo it. My intention was to meet up with our group, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be.

As I was waiting at Midway for the early AM flight to D.C. three semi- narians arrived. As I approached them I said, "March for Life” in an ex- cited tone and they replied, “Yes” and I said me too. As we were talking, about a dozen more showed up, all wearing their collars which of course caught everyone’s eyes at Midway. One passenger said she was nervous about flying but now felt very safe.

That evening was the opening Mass at the Basilica of the which was attended by about 100 deacons, 75 , 30 bishops, and 5 cardinals. Planned throughout the day was Adoration, prayers, and confessions. I arrived two hours early for the 5pm Mass and the first floor was already packed, including many high school and college students sitting in the side aisles and all the nooks and crannies. The overflow went downstairs which had about 16 very large flat screens and another 500 chairs set up to watch the Mass.

I decided not to vest and join my brother clergy on the Altar so I could tour this beautiful church, but with so many people sitting on the floor I was trying not to step on fingers or trip over legs that were spread out all over. I decided to go to confession and offer up the indulgence. After waiting in line for a half hour, I met Fr. Lucas who was using one of the small side altars for reconciliation. I felt an immediate connection to him, but with many people still waiting, we couldn’t chit-chat. I then went looking for a seat and in God’s providence I met Sister Donna who is a Vincentian sister with the Daughters of Charity. We became immediate friends when I told her I too am a member of St. Vincent de Paul Society.

The next morning at breakfast I met two people who traveled from Croatia gathering ideas so they may organize a peaceful protest against abortion in their country. I also entered into an interesting conversation with a woman who was planning on participating in the Women’s March, scheduled the following day. I tried to meet on middle ground and told her the two marches are compatible, I pray I left her with some wise and compassionate words that will settle deep in her heart.

Before the rally which started at noon, I visited the offices of Senators Richard Durbin and Tammy Duckworth hoping to meet with a staffer to express my opinions. I stated I was there for the March for Life and wanted to meet with someone on staff for a few minutes to express my sincere thoughts. Senator Duckworth’s receptionist told me no one was available so I left a letter stating my views towards the protection of the unborn. Senator Durbin’s receptionist had me wait about 10 minutes before telling me no one was available but during that time I was having a cordial conversation with two other receptionists which I felt were interviewing me.

Upon leaving they offered me a pass to view the Senate which was in session. I guess it pays to be polite and civil. So I walked quickly to the Capitol to take advantage of this opportunity and witness our public servants in action. It wasn’t very exciting but I did feel privileged to be in the Senate assembly room and listen to them.

The rally started at noon in front of the Washington Monument. As I was walking, many other marchers were headed the same way. In front of me were some high school students wearing varsity jackets from John Paul High School. I was going to ask where they were from when I realized, this is the Body of Christ in action, One mind, with One purpose. Walking in the middle of the crowd down the center of the street shoulder to shoulder gave a sense of community and that all one hundred thousand of us were bonding and rallying not just for ourselves, but for our King, Jesus Christ.

The crowd was a mixture of youth, many young moms and dads walking with their children and mid- dle aged. I thought I would see more seniors like myself but guessing we only amounted to 10% of the crowd. I was inspired by the young teens who I felt made the best signs and was glad to see so many young families participating in this peaceful protest.

My take away is that I still need to be realistic and accept I may not see abortion outlawed in my life- time, but that doesn’t mean I stop praying and participating in the March for Life. I have now be- come hooked on it and plan to attend next year. I think the biggest impacts are on the people I en- countered and conversed with while waiting for the metro rail, letting waitresses know why I was in town, sitting at a lunch counter sharing my thoughts with the person next to me and at the airport waiting to fly home. I also learned I need to take this message back home and where I work at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store.

Recently we heard the Gospel of Jesus calling his disciples and He will teach them a new trade, how to fish for people. Sometimes we are called to certain actions that don’t make sense and appear out of character for us, but listing to God’s call and trusting in His Providence is part of our faith. Please continue to pray for an end to abortion, for our public servants, and especially the young mothers and fathers who I feel are misguided. This is Commitment Weekend, when we are all asked to pledge our support for the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA).

As Bishop Conlon shared in his homily last week- end, God calls all of us to be His partners in caring for those in need in the Diocese of Joliet. The CMAA supports thirty ministries that benefit so many and allow us to do God’s work here on earth. Our parish could not possibly accomplish all that the Diocese is able to when we all work to- gether. Our parish’s goal for the 2018 CMAA is $52,800. If we raise more than this goal, 70% of the amount paid over goal will be returned to the parish. Please prayerfully reflect on how you can best support this year’s CMAA and complete an in -pew envelope today.

On Sunday, February 25, CCW of St. Luke Parish will be sponsoring a Lenten blood drive from 8:00am to 1:00pm through Lifesource services. Join us for a pilgrimage to Poland as we follow in the footsteps of St. Sister Fausna Kowalska, an Apostle of Divine Mercy, and Pope St. John Paul II, the great and unforgeable defender of the Faith and life. The pilgrimage will include many places connected with their lives and ministry. We will also discover the beauty, arsc wealth and the diverse history of this country located in the center of Europe (“heart of Europe” as it was described by Norman Davies, an English historian). We will explore both large cies and small towns known for their beauty and cultural and spiritual significance. The pilgrimage will cross Poland from the high Tatra Mountains in the south, which were frequently trodden by John Paul II, to the peaceful Balc Sea in the north. We will even go underground to see the spectacular Royal Salt Mines from the 14th century. Due to its strategic central locaon in Europe, Poland always served as a bridge between the West and the East and it developed a deep respect for various religions and cultures. It is also the homeland of notable figures such as Copernicus, Chopin, St. and many other and martyrs who gave their lives as witnesses to the truth.

The pilgrimage will be an opportunity to explore this great country and visit its spiritual and arsc treasures. The pilgrimage includes the following places: Krakow, Wieliczka (Salt Mines), Wadowice (hometown of Karol Wojtyla), Zakopane (Tatra Mountains), Auschwitz, Czestochowa (Shrine of Black Madonna), Lichen, Swinice Warckie (St. Fausna’s nave village), Malbork Castle, Gdansk, Plock (St. Fausna), Niepokalanow (St. Maximilian Kolbe monastery) and Warsaw. The cost per person is $2,975 (double occupancy), which includes roundtrip airfare from Chicago (direct flight), hotel accommodaons, most meals and most museums fees. The chaplain of the pilgrimage will be Fr. Mark Jurzyk. For reservaons or more informaon, please contact Elizabeth Mazur at 630-483-4673, ext. 105 or [email protected]
