St. Francis of Assisi was founded on July 1, 1959, a daughter parish of Christ the King. Like most parishes of the diocese, St. Francis’ roots can be traced back to what is now the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Out of the Cathedral (then St. Aloysius) was born St. Joseph parish, which gave way to Christ the King, which in turn gave way to St. Francis. In the fifties, as Christ the King continued to grow, it became apparent that the population of the parish, expanding rapidly in West Wichita, exceeded Christ the King’s capabilities. With a decree by Bishop Mark K. Carroll, St. Francis of Assisi Parish be- came a reality in July 1959. Rev. Msgr. Joseph J. Gerstenkorn was appointed pastor, and he took up residence in his own house, which would also serve as the rectory, 866 N. Socora Street (what is now the Nazareth House). The first outlines of the current parish complex began a few months later as construction got under way on the first parish build- ing. That was only the beginning. In July 1960, the first service was held in the first parish building, and in August, Bishop Carroll blessed the fledgling church complex. An addition to the original building was completed, and in September 1961, the school opened. The church building we now know as St. Francis was blessed in March 1977. Since its founding, St. Francis has given way to two daughter parishes, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and St. Catherine of Siena. By 1982, St. Francis parish had grown to house 7,000 members and continued to expand. Thus, Bishop David M. Maloney issued a decree establishing St. Elizabeth on March 30, 1982. WELCOME!
