Cornelius, Pope and Cyprian, Bishop, Martyrs Feast Day: September 16 We who are alive are constantly being given up to death for the sake of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. Saints Cornelius and Cyprian whose memories the Church honors today were buddies who gave their lives for the cause of Christ in the mid third century AD. St. Cyprian, a bishop from Carthage, helped St. Cornelius who was the pope at the time to defend the faith against heretics. Cornelius died in 253 AD in exile while Cyprian was decapitated on 14th Sept 25 8 AD. St. Cyprian was the first African bishop to be martyred and is the patron saint of North Africa and Algeria. The inclusion of the names of these two martyrs in the Roman Canon shows how highly they were regarded in the early Church. Sts. Cornelius and Cyprian, Pray for us! Prayers & Praise Pray for the Sick: Mim Kaiser, Tom Raynor, Carol Clark, Philomena Mellody, Ed Adams, Jan Grodzki, Pat Burns, Carol Wake, Frances Wake, Maryann Eltringham, Karin Callan, Olive Cifelli, Dearan McConnell , What right do we have to limit the amount and degree of forgiveness we Michelle Benzenhafer, Mary Curran, show to others when we are so desperately in need of it ourselves? In not Marie Puca, Bill Sutterlin, Estelle wanting someone who hurt us to downplay or forget the gravity of their Scannella, Gwen Brown, Helen Rimo, wrong, we cling to anger, resentment, and wrath as a way of maintaining Daniel Bogacz, Joyce Gafgen, Adeline control. It is a way to acknowledge and express our deep hurt. We fail to Acerno, Timothy Gallagher, Rocco realize that in doing so we hold ourselves hostage to these destructive Gallagher, Bill Cooper, Doris Radice, feelings and actually become mired in the bondage of sin. All we gain Lillian Kimtis, Dave Doran, Patricia is further alienation from ourselves, others, and especially God. We are Bayless, David Isaac, Ermelo Obleada, no longer free but tethered to all of this unresolved negativity. Don’t we Kathleen McGowan, Kevin Healy, James Healy, Kursten Lewis, Doris really want to let it go? The fact is that we need to. Buckley, Phyllis Novotny, Marieelena A good self-reflective posture will quickly show us that when the shoe is Costino, Lyalya Strumkovsky, Haley on the other foot and we are the ones in need of forgiveness, we desire Addonizio, Helen Giovannetti, Maria it above anything else. This is especially true with our relationship with Corbett, Cathy Izbicki, Gene Hill, Dr. God. It is hypocritical to want one thing for ourselves and something else Jewel Brennan, Barbara Kowalski for another. Yet, many act in precisely this way. Pray for our Beloved Deceased: Perhaps we think that in offering forgiveness, even for the most grievousof Joseph Aromando, Jr., wrongs, somehow excuses the person of their wrong and makes it almost William Perhacs acceptable. This is what makes revenge, retaliation, and punishment so Congratulations attractive. We see forgiveness as being an eraser that easily wipes away to the Newly Baptized: the offense without consequence. Or, we may believe that in offering Mariel Jane T. Magistrado forgiveness I must somehow forget the wrong and open myself as a Sophia Anne Campioni victim of even greater possible hurts in the future. In fact, forgiving my Wedding Banns: sister or brother of their wrongful actions or attitudes involves none of II Rudin Orantes/Victoria DeBlasio this. It does not erase anything or position me vulnerably as a doormat In Our Nation’s Service: to be walked on. Lt. Nicholas Layton, Michael Arcangelo, Forgiveness is an act of freedom that restores honest dialogue, shares Steven J. Arkuszewski, PFC Jonathan true, and heartfelt feelings and acknowledges the consequences of Bussi, Col. James P. Challender, Senior an action. It admits that the wrong has caused a hurt that must be Airman Colleen Daily, Staff Sgt. Brian healed and squarely positions responsibility on the offender. The act of Dorney, Lt. Col. James Dunphy, Lt. forgiveness recognizes our sinfulness and brokenness. It also admits that Lauren Eanes, Staff Sgt. Douglas M. the most saintly among us is capable of doing very grave and deep harm Eckert II, Cpl. Steven M. Edwards, to another person. It sees that we all can be victims of our passions and MM3 Victor Frazier, Specialist Mark works in progress that deserve unlimited chances to get it right. With Gonzalez, 1st Lt. Nick Guarraggi, Sgt. Michael Joy, Sgt. John Lawrence, Senior forgiveness, I release myself from the bonds of negativity and pursue a Airman Justin Magariello, Staff Sgt. path of restoration, wholeness, and healing. I do not forget the wrong Ryan McSorley, Sgt. Frederick Joseph nor do I dismiss it. Sometimes, we have to stay far away from the one Miller, 2nd Lt. Patrick Rogers, Cadet who hurt us. But we can still heal internally and be free. Sean Rogers, PFC Zack Pappas, Staff For the one who wants to be forgiven and the one who needs offer Sgt. Stephanie Pinzino, LCpl Jose D. forgiveness, the journey can be an adventure in learning what brought Sandi, LCpl William Sheehan, Cpl. us to this place and what is needed to move forward. This is exactly how Christopher R. Singer, Col. Stanley J. God treats us. Why would we not want to do the same for others? Sliwinski, 1st Lt. Patrick Whitty Prayers & Praise Prayer & Worship 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ September 13, 2020 Gospel mt 18:21-35 Hymns Peter approached Jesus and asked him, “Lord, if my broth- Gathering Song: For Als # 708 er sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as Offertory: Serv # 376 seven times?” Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven Communion: Terd Is # 467 times but seventy-seven times.
