One of the first school assignments is always to report on a significant summer event. And so I am happy to share with you some of the reflections that our teens wrote after participating in the Steubenville Youth Conference: * Words to describe Steubenville: inspiring, forgiveness, memorable, and Jesus! I loved it! * Steubenville was such an experience for me. My favorite part was seeing the power of the Holy Spirit Saturday night at Adoration. The Holy Spirit coming over the kids there was so spiritually comforting. * Steubenville was probably one of the best experiences I have ever had and I feel so full of love. * I am so blessed and so thankful for my life. Steubenville has opened my eyes! * This was my third Steubenville and just like the other two, God changed my heart in a way that I never thought was possible. He made me remember what our faith is all about, which is loving others as yourself no matter where they are from or what they look like. We are all called by God to be His disciples. * Going to Steubenville has forever changed my life faithfully, spiritually, and physically…He (God) has taught me that 4 years of grief and guilt has kept me from being the best that I can be. * Going to Steubenville, I thought “I’m such a terrible person.” I didn’t think I would enjoy it; I didn’t think it would impact me at all. Seeing all of these people who believed frightened me, but at the same time I was amazed. The collective experience was amazing! * I hadn’t been to confession in three years, so going at Steubenville was amazing, and I felt so relieved. At Adoration, I felt very close to God and was just very happy. One of the leaders put their hands on my back, and I just felt like God was with me. This was my first year, and I can’t wait to come back. * I felt Him for the first time in my life. I felt His love and warmth flow over me, through me and capture my heart during adoration. * The Steubenville experience is unforgettable. I truly enjoyed seeing kids that would normally not sing and dance along doing that. The speakers were awesome. Leah was my favorite and she is my new role model. I feel a lot better about my relationship with God now. I know what I need to work on and what I struggle with. I hope that I can continue the rest of my life on this Jesus high! * I am chosen, even in my darkest times and my best! I am chosen by the Lord! * …right before the monstrance came out and they said, “Jesus is at the door,” I pictured Jesus carrying His cross right outside the door. And, I felt Jesus at the door to my heart. I felt Him knocking at the door to my heart, and that He always wants to love me and me to love Him more. He will never give up on us no matter what we look like, or what we wear, etc… * I went to Steubenville considering myself as someone who was “raised” Catholic. By the time I left, I had really BECOME CATHOLIC! And as we get started with a new school year, the parishes of the Augusta Deanery are offering an extra opportunity for you and your family “to feel a lot better about your relationship with God.” After the 5:15 Mass on Wednesday, Augusta 28, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm, you will be able to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This is a deanery wide effort to offer your family a special opportunity to make a good confession at the beginning of a new school year. On August 28, the Catholic Church celebrates the life of Saint , the North African educator who after his dramatic conversion became one of history’s greatest teachers of the faith. It is a good day to seek God’s forgiveness and to move forward in faith. Your parish priests will be available at this special time to celebrate this sacrament of God’s mercy with you. The Sacrament of Penance is such a gift! It can be very hard to do -- it can be intimidating, embarrassing -- but once absolution is given, you will walk out of that confessional feeling like a trillion bucks. Christ, in His most Holy Wisdom, gave us this precious Sacrament to literally and truly bestow His grace upon us through His priests as a means of forgiving us and assuring us of His mercy and love for us. This psychological benefit of “feeling assured” and “clean again” stems not only from the supernatural fruits of the Sacrament, but from our human nature and our need to purge ourselves of those things that plague our consciences. Christ, the Great Physician, knows us well and knows that “confession is good for the soul,” in both a supernatural and psychological sense.

The parish staff is happy to welcome Mrs. Karen Mulherin Brooks to the team. Since Karen is a Mulherin, she already knows a good many of our parishioners. And I have no doubt that she will be very kind and attentive to the half of our faith community that aren’t her relatives.
