While the divine Word creates and maintains the reality of the human (and is essential to the profoundest understanding of the human), situation-specific challenges require specific applications of the Gospel. Thielicke’s theological anthropology exemplifies this approach: it confronts his culture’s existential concerns with a particular articulation of God’s “many-splendored” grace. To the postwar Germans anxious over identity and meaning, Thielicke proclaimed that humanity, created in God’s image and appointed to a divine relationship, is reconciled by Christ. Although immanent, penultimate relations defined and controlled the human person in popular understanding, Thielicke contended it is the person’s transcendent, definitive relation to God in Christ that constitutes true being. Thielicke’s theological approach and his Christological-relational anthropology remain pertinent today. ii Although Thielicke observed idiosyncratic expressions of existential concerns, those concerns are perennial. They are grounded in humanity’s universal sinful condition. -

Im Jahr 1937 publizierten Otto Dibelius und Martin Nie- möller, zwei Heroen des so genannten Kirchenkampfes, eine gemeinsame Schrift unter dem Titel „Wir rufen Deutschland zu Gott“. Ihre hierin geäußerten Ansichten zur Frauenbewe- gung und das bei dieser Gelegenheit von ihnen eher en pas- sant preisgegebene Frauenbild riefen in einigen Kreisen, die sich dem Lager der Bekennenden Kirche (BK) zurechneten, Verwunderung und teilweise Empörung hervor. Die beiden prominenten Führungsmänner der Kirchenopposition hatten unter anderem geschrieben, die Frauenbewegung der unterge- gangenen Weimarer Republik habe die Frauen bedauerlicher- weise dazu verleitet, sich für die Politik zu interessieren, sich in Vereinen zu betätigen und am öffentlichen Leben - sei es an Vorträgen oder Konzerten und dergleichen - teilzunehmen. Auch wurde die unselige Frauenbewegung für den Geburten- rückgang verantwortlich gemacht. Den so zahlreich gewor- denen „Fräulein Doktors“ und den „großen Vereinsdamen“ - gemeint waren damit Prominente wie Gertrud Bäumer oder Marie-Elisabeth Lüders - stellten die führenden Bekenntnis- theologen die ‚gute deutsche Mutter’ gegenüber, die - wenn- gleich weniger gebildet - Kinder gebäre und sie auch ordent- lich erziehe. Weir History Department, Otto-Friedrich-University, Fischstrasse 5/7, 96047 Bamberg, Germany [email protected] One of the most remarkable transformations of European society and politics during the Cold War period was in relations between socialism and religion. Extreme hostility between revolutionary socialism and Christianity had been a structural component of major political conflicts in the trans-war period of 1914 to 1945. With an eye to violence against churches in Mexico, Spain and the Soviet Union, Pope Pius XI had declared in 1937 that ‘for the first time in history we are witnessing a struggle, cold-blooded in purpose and mapped out to the least detail, between man and “all that is called God”’. Upon the German invasion of his native Netherlands in 1940, Europe’s leading ecumenical spokesman Willem Visser ’t Hooft similarly spoke of the Christian struggle against godlessness as ‘a war behind the war’ that had begun ‘long before September 1939 and will certainly go on long after an armistice has been con- cluded’.1 This hostility flowed into the accelerating polarisation of European politics and diplomacy in the immediate post-war period that led to the Cold War.2 Events such as the exchange of letters between US President Harry S. Truman and Pope Pius XII in 1946 confirming the Christian core of Western civilisa- tion or the show trial of Cardinal József Mindszenty in Hungary in 1949 were moments of deep symbolic significance that welded religion to the solidifying political rhetoric.3 As Dianne Kirby writes, ‘for many who lived through the period, the Cold War was one of history’s great religious wars, a global conflict between the god-fearing and the godless’.4 In the 1960s, however, the situation changed dramatically. -

Krause ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Scott H. Krause: Outpost of Freedom: A German-American Network’s Campaign to bring Cold War Democracy to West Berlin, 1933-66 (under the direction of Konrad H. Jarausch) This study explores Berlin’s sudden transformation from the capital of Nazi Germany to bastion of democracy in the Cold War. This project has unearthed how this remarkable development resulted from a transatlantic campaign by liberal American occupation officials, and returned émigrés, or remigrés, of the Marxist Social Democratic Party (SPD). This informal network derived from members of “Neu Beginnen” in American exile. Concentrated in wartime Manhattan, their identity as German socialists remained remarkably durable despite the Nazi persecution they faced and their often-Jewish background. Through their experiences in New Deal America, these self-professed “revolutionary socialists” came to emphasize “anti- totalitarianism,” making them suspicious of Stalinism. Serving in the OSS, leftists such as Hans Hirschfeld forged friendships with American left-wing liberals. These experiences connected a wider network of remigrés and occupiers by forming an epistemic community in postwar Berlin. They recast Berlin’s ruins as “Outpost of Freedom” in the Cold War. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by White Rose E-theses Online Denazifying Germany: German Protestantism and the Response to Denazification in the American Zone, 1945-1948 By Malcolm Coates University of York Department of History Master of Arts by Research September 2014 Abstract Following the Second World War, Germany underwent a process designed to remove elements of Nazism from its population called denazification, and this process was the most far reaching in the United States’ Zone. As Germany lay in ruins, the Church experienced a surge in popularity, and the Protestant church in particular began to explore issues of guilt and judgment. In this dissertation, I aim to explore the relationship between the US Military Government, led by General Lucius Clay, and the Evangelical Church of Germany (EKD), led by Bishop Theophil Wurm, Martin Niemöller and others, on this issue of denazification. The first phase of denazification, which lasted from May 1945 – March 1946 was administered by the United States. This was the harshest phase of the process, where everyone in the US Zone had to defend their time during the war years, and many were arrested without trial simply for having an affiliation with Nazism. Due to the size of the task and the return home of many American troops, however, denazification was transferred over to German administration in 1946, and generally made more lenient thereafter. Although the council of the EKD accepted their own guilt at Stuttgart, they believed that denazification could not morally rehabilitate the Germans into society. -

Jarausch) In the decades following World War II, German Protestants worked to transform their religious tradition. While this tradition had been previously characterized by rigidly hierarchical institutional structures, strong nationalist leanings, and authoritarian political tendencies, the experiences of dictatorship and defeat caused many Protestants to question their earlier beliefs. Motivated by the desire to overcome the burden of the Nazi past and by the opportunity to play a major role in postwar rebuilding efforts, several groups within the churches worked to reform Protestant social and political attitudes. As a result of their efforts, the churches came to play an important role in the ultimate success and stability of West German democracy. This study examines this transformation at the meetings of the German Protestant Kirchentag, one of the largest and most diverse postwar gatherings of Protestant laity. After situating the Kirchentag within the theological and political debates of the immediate postwar years, it focuses on changing understandings of the role of the church in society, the pluralization of Protestant political attitudes, and the shift from national to international self-understandings within the churches. -

Throughout the thesis we use the example ofHelmut Thielicke to demonstrate the nature of an individualistic christology. His sermons are particularly singled out because they serve as the main vehicle through which his christology reached the people.
