Our fathers used to call It "SOCIal worship" and r wonder whether any significance attaches to the fact Ijjhat we now caU it ." public worship." :At this point, as with our doctrinal in heritance, we are part of the fruit of the great RefoTInation mo~ ment of the 16th century and the heirs not of one but of several of the great reformers of that century. Our heritage is a varied and complex one. It is this which accounts both for its strength and its weakness. First and foremost comes our debt to Luther. For 'IJhe mediaeval Church the Mass was the centre and climax of worship. It had become by the 16th century-in the words of W. D. Maxwell "a dramatic spectacle, culminating not in communion but in [lhe miracle of transubstantiation" (An Outline of Christian Worship, 1939 edition, p. 72). The service was said ~naudibly in a rtongue of which few even df the priests remained really masters. Many of the latter were illiterate and the sermon had long fallen into general disuse. The great contribution of the dynamic 'Luther was to restore the vernacular as the medium of worship. His German Bible and his German IMass sett the pattern for many other lands and races besides the German, among them our own. But Luther did more than Ithat. He revised the Roman service of Mass in the interests of gospel purity and then, perhaps less soundly in the long run, asa medium of instruction. -

While the divine Word creates and maintains the reality of the human (and is essential to the profoundest understanding of the human), situation-specific challenges require specific applications of the Gospel. Thielicke’s theological anthropology exemplifies this approach: it confronts his culture’s existential concerns with a particular articulation of God’s “many-splendored” grace. To the postwar Germans anxious over identity and meaning, Thielicke proclaimed that humanity, created in God’s image and appointed to a divine relationship, is reconciled by Christ. Although immanent, penultimate relations defined and controlled the human person in popular understanding, Thielicke contended it is the person’s transcendent, definitive relation to God in Christ that constitutes true being. Thielicke’s theological approach and his Christological-relational anthropology remain pertinent today. ii Although Thielicke observed idiosyncratic expressions of existential concerns, those concerns are perennial. They are grounded in humanity’s universal sinful condition. -

Billy Graham in West Germany: German Protestantism between Americanization and Rechristianization, 1954–70 Uta Andrea Balbier Billy Graham in Düsseldorf, June 1954 (Bundesarchiv, Picture 194-0798-41, Photo: Hans Lachmann) In June 1954, American evangelist Billy Graham came to the Federal Republic of Germany for his first revival meetings. In Frankfurt, he preached at the American Christ Chapel, in Düsseldorf at the Rheinstadium, and two days later he closed his first German campaign with a service at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. Thousands came to see him and hundreds stepped forward at the end of the service to publicly accept Christ as their Savior. Another campaign fol- lowed in 1955. The American preacher then returned to Germany again dur- ing the 1960s, and his work there peaked in 1970 with his EURO 70 campaign.1 Graham’s campaigns in Germany were not foreign spectacles, but rites of passage in German Protestantism. Being an icon of religious modernization and a return to the traditional at the same time, he became a focal point of self-reflection for German Protes- tants in the 1950s and 1960s. Church leaders, theologians, and laymen used Graham’s campaigns to discuss secular and political challenges and deep social transformations in the religious and secular sphere. Therefore, leading Protes- tant bishops such as Otto Dibelius and Hanns Lilje supported Graham’s cam- paigns. -

Central Europe West Germany FOREIGN POLICY wTHEN CHANCELLOR Ludwig Erhard's coalition government sud- denly collapsed in October 1966, none of the Federal Republic's major for- eign policy goals, such as the reunification of Germany and the improvement of relations with its Eastern neighbors, with France, NATO, the Arab coun- tries, and with the new African nations had as yet been achieved. Relations with the United States What actually brought the political and economic crisis into the open and hastened Erhard's downfall was that he returned empty-handed from his Sep- tember visit to President Lyndon B. Johnson. Erhard appealed to Johnson for an extension of the date when payment of $3 billion was due for military equipment which West Germany had bought from the United States to bal- ance dollar expenses for keeping American troops in West Germany. (By the end of 1966, Germany paid DM2.9 billion of the total DM5.4 billion, provided in the agreements between the United States government and the Germans late in 1965. The remaining DM2.5 billion were to be paid in 1967.) During these talks Erhard also expressed his government's wish that American troops in West Germany remain at their present strength. Al- though Erhard's reception in Washington and Texas was friendly, he gained no major concessions. Late in October the United States and the United Kingdom began talks with the Federal Republic on major economic and military problems. Relations with France When Erhard visited France in February, President Charles de Gaulle gave reassurances that France would not recognize the East German regime, that he would advocate the cause of Germany in Moscow, and that he would 349 350 / AMERICAN JEWISH YEAR BOOK, 1967 approve intensified political and cultural cooperation between the six Com- mon Market powers—France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. -

A South African Reformed Perspective on Dialogue
Scriptura 88 (2005), pp. 183-204 ON LEARNING TO SPEAK: A SOUTH AFRICAN REFORMED PERSPECTIVE ON DIALOGUE Dirk J Smit Systematic Theology Stellenbosch University Abstract The paper makes a contribution to the official Roman Catholic-Reformed dialogue between the Vatican and the World Alliance of Reformed Churches. After several years of reflection on the notion of “the kingdom of God” it became obvious to participants in the dialogue that different views of authority and of dialogue itself played a major role in the process. This paper was requested as an attempt to reflect on some of these differences from a Reformed perspective and from a South African experience. It therefore represents a case study of bilateral dialogue in which South African Reformed Christians have been participating. A first introductory section proves narrative background to the specific case study (par. 4-13). In four further sections four major clusters of crucial ecumenical issues that came to the fore in the dialogue are then discussed, namely questions concerning truth and community (par. 14-27), questions concerning doctrine and ethics (par. 28-46), questions concerning real reception (par. 47-56) and questions concerning speaking with authority in the church (par. 57-70). A final section offers some concluding reflections on the process of learning to speak when Reformed Christians and churches are involved. These concluding remarks are intended to contribute to this official bilateral dialogue. Defining Lutheranism from the Margins: Paul Peter Waldenström on Being a “Good Lutheran” in America MARK SAFSTROM he histories of church institutions may often be written by the orthodox “winners,” but dissenters, protestors, and even her Tetics undoubtedly play important roles in giving direction to the parent institution’s evolving identity. Such voices from the mar- gins often set the agenda at crucial moments, prompting both the dissenters and establishment to engage in a debate to define proper theology and practice. Once a dissenting group has formally sepa- rated from a parent body, there is a risk that teleological hindsight will obscure the nature of these conversations, including the reasons for the ultimate separation and the intentions of both the dissenters and the establishment.
