Powyższy wzgląd, a nie mniej okoliczność, iż post factum uda- ło się dotrzeć do pewnych jeszcze świadectw źródłowych, pozwalających na uszczegółowienie dotychczas poczynionych w owym względzie usta- leń, skłania do pochylenia się nad tytułową tematyką i zaprezentowania jej w formie odrębnego artykułu, dzięki czemu na przyszłość nie będzie zachodziła konieczność poszukiwania rozproszonych informacji w rzeczo- nej materii w literaturze przedmiotu (w tym we wspomnianej wyżej edy- cji). Tak też w pierwszej kolejności dokonamy poniżej zebrania podstawo- wych informacji odnośnie do sakry każdego spośród interesujących nas hierarchów (data, miejsce, główny konsekrator, współkonsekratorzy), by następnie przyporządkować wszystkich tych biskupów do wyróżnianych w literaturze przedmiotu linii („rodzin”) sukcesji święceń. Całość wywo- dów zaopatrzona zostanie w zawarte w przypisach stosowne wskazania bi- bliograficzne, informujące o podstawie źródłowej tudzież o istniejących opracowaniach, w których mowa jest o danym fakcie, czego we wspo- minanej publikacji z roku 2006 zasadniczo brakowało (znalazły się tam 1 K.R. Prokop, Pasterze i rządcy diecezji mińskiej, pińskiej i drohiczyńskiej, Drohiczyn 2006 (wspomniane schematy sukcesji znajdują się tamże na s. 299–300). 361 Krzysztof R. At the same time a church was formed, consisting of seven male members, viz" Jonathan Tyng, John Cummings, senior, John Blanchard, Cornelius Waldo, Samuel Warner, Obadiah Perry and Samuel French. John Blanchard and Cornelius Waldo were chosen the first deacons. The following is the Covenant which was adopted in the neighboring churches at that period, and which undoubtedly was adopted here. It is substantially the same as that which was framed for the First Church in Salem, by the associated churches of the colony, in 1629, and promulgated by the General Assembly in 168o, for the use of the colony. -

CCHA, Historical Studies, 58 (1991), 99-114 Fifteen Years in the Propaganda and Other Roman Archives, 1975-1990: Was It Worth It? by Luca Codignola Universita di Genova Over the past fifteen years, an array of calendars, inventories and finding aids have been produced that have thrown much new light on the relations between North America and the Holy See, on the development of the Catholic community on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, and on the history of English- and French-speaking North America as a whole. These are due to a number of researchers, both Italian and Canadian, who have systematically investigated the Roman ecclesiastical archives with the constant and unfailing assistance from the National Archives of Canada, the Université Saint-Paul, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. These researchers are Monique Benoit, Luigi Bruti Liberati, Giovanni Pizzorusso, Gabriele P. Scardellato, Matteo Sanfilippo, Nicoletta Serio, and this writer. Turkish Historical Review 2 (2011) 125–154 brill.nl/thr Malta and the study of Arabic in the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries Carmel Cassar * Abstract Th e Holy See became aware of the potential evangelising role of the Maltese in Ottoman lands at least from the mid-sixteenth century. Th is had much to do with Malta’s geographical proxim- ity to North Africa, coupled with the ability of the Maltese to speak a native Semitic language, believed to be close to Arabic, while at the same time being fervently Catholic Christians. Malta was singled out for this role mainly because the majority of Levantine Christian communities, then largely under Ottoman rule, were known to speak some form of Arabic. Th e combination of these factors appeared to be an excellent combination of circumstances to the Catholic Church authorities in Rome who believed that Malta was ideally suited for the teaching of Arabic. In Rome there was a general belief that the establishment of a school of Arabic in Malta, would help make the Catholic Church more accessible to the Christians of the Levant. However, despite continuous eff orts, throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, by the Holy Congregation of Propaganda Fide, the teaching of Arabic never really took off in Malta. Under British colonial administration, in the early nineteenth century, Arabic remained on the list of subjects taught at the University of Malta and was later introduced at the Lyceum and the Valletta Government School. Th e British colonial authorities may even have encouraged its teaching and for a brief time, in the mid-nineteenth century, the well known Lebanese scholar Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq, was lecturer of Arabic at Valletta. -

William Bernard Ullathorne and the Foundation of Australian Catholicism 1815-1840 PAUL COLLINS A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University March 1989 This Thesis is entirely my own work. ABSTRACT William Bernard Ullathorne was Vicar General of New South Wales from 1832 to 1841. While Catholics had arrived in the First Fleet in 1788, it was not until the 1830s that the church's ministerial structure was put on a permanent footing. In order to place the decade of the 1830s in context, I have outlined the early history of Catholicism in Australia and examined why Fathers Therry and Conolly failed to put down permanent roots. The thesis then goes on to argue that Ullathorne was the key person in establishing permanent ecclesiastical structures. The Catholic Church had begun in Australia in 1820 as an official convict chaplaincy. Church-state relationships were of fundamental importance. It was Ullathorne who negotiated a working relationship with the colonial government of New South Wales. The thesis argues that his success in Australia was based on his own clerical professionalism. The professional clergyman was a newly emerging species in the 19th century.
