Displaced "Pan-Americans" and the Transformation of the Catholic Church in Philadelphia, 1789-1850 HE REVEREND JOHN HUGHES TOLD A GREAT STORY about the construction of the Roman Catholic church of St. John the Evangelist in Philadelphia. Hughes, the project's major fundraiser, St. John's first pastor, and later archbishop of New York, related that his announcement in 1830 of the plan to build a grand new cornerstone of Catholic life garnered only a lukewarm response from his congregation. Days went by before he received his first donation, from a humble ser- vant, who delivered to the priest a few precious cents from her meager wages. From that moment on, Hughes "never had a doubt of the success" of the building project.1 This lovely anecdote, redolent of New Testament teachings, burnishes one of the principal and lasting images of the Catholic Church in the United States, but it obscures crucial aspects of St. John's construction and the Catholic Church's broader institutional development. From the 1780s to the mid-nineteenth century, a small group of "Pan-Americans," men and women with extensive ties to Latin America and the Caribbean, played a determinative role in the church's transformation in Philadelphia and, as a result, the nation as a whole. Some, their lives thrown into disarray by internecine warfare and eco- nomic upheaval, came to Philadelphia for short periods of time, while others made a permanent home in the city. Here, they met residents with an existing network of economic, political, and cultural ties to the region. This group became embroiled in an intense confrontation over the future of American Catholicism. -

Powyższy wzgląd, a nie mniej okoliczność, iż post factum uda- ło się dotrzeć do pewnych jeszcze świadectw źródłowych, pozwalających na uszczegółowienie dotychczas poczynionych w owym względzie usta- leń, skłania do pochylenia się nad tytułową tematyką i zaprezentowania jej w formie odrębnego artykułu, dzięki czemu na przyszłość nie będzie zachodziła konieczność poszukiwania rozproszonych informacji w rzeczo- nej materii w literaturze przedmiotu (w tym we wspomnianej wyżej edy- cji). Tak też w pierwszej kolejności dokonamy poniżej zebrania podstawo- wych informacji odnośnie do sakry każdego spośród interesujących nas hierarchów (data, miejsce, główny konsekrator, współkonsekratorzy), by następnie przyporządkować wszystkich tych biskupów do wyróżnianych w literaturze przedmiotu linii („rodzin”) sukcesji święceń. Całość wywo- dów zaopatrzona zostanie w zawarte w przypisach stosowne wskazania bi- bliograficzne, informujące o podstawie źródłowej tudzież o istniejących opracowaniach, w których mowa jest o danym fakcie, czego we wspo- minanej publikacji z roku 2006 zasadniczo brakowało (znalazły się tam 1 K.R. GLOSSARY Bishop A member of the hierarchy of the Church, given jurisdiction over a diocese; or an archbishop over an archdiocese Bull (From bulla, a seal) A solemn pronouncement by the Pope, such as the 1537 Bull of Pope Paul III, Sublimis Deus,proclaiming the human rights of the Indians (See Ch. 1, n. 16) Chapter An assembly of members, or delegates of a community, province, congregation, or the entire Order of Preachers. A chapter is called for decision-making or election, at intervals determined by the Constitutions. Coadjutor One appointed to assist a bishop in his diocese, with the right to succeed him as its head. Bishop Congregation A title given by the Church to an approved body of religious women or men. Convent The local house of a community of Dominican friars or sisters. Council The central governing unit of a Dominican priory, province, congregation, monastery, laity and the entire Order. Diocese A division of the Church embracing the members entrusted to a bishop; in the case of an archdiocese, an archbishop. Divine Office The Liturgy of the Hours. The official prayer of the Church composed of psalms, hymns and readings from Scripture or related sources. Episcopal Related to a bishop and his jurisdiction in the Church; as in "Episcopal See." William Bernard Ullathorne and the Foundation of Australian Catholicism 1815-1840 PAUL COLLINS A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University March 1989 This Thesis is entirely my own work. ABSTRACT William Bernard Ullathorne was Vicar General of New South Wales from 1832 to 1841. While Catholics had arrived in the First Fleet in 1788, it was not until the 1830s that the church's ministerial structure was put on a permanent footing. In order to place the decade of the 1830s in context, I have outlined the early history of Catholicism in Australia and examined why Fathers Therry and Conolly failed to put down permanent roots. The thesis then goes on to argue that Ullathorne was the key person in establishing permanent ecclesiastical structures. The Catholic Church had begun in Australia in 1820 as an official convict chaplaincy. Church-state relationships were of fundamental importance. It was Ullathorne who negotiated a working relationship with the colonial government of New South Wales. The thesis argues that his success in Australia was based on his own clerical professionalism. The professional clergyman was a newly emerging species in the 19th century. -

The Church of St. Philip Neri Jim Roese, 2006 A History About the Church of St. Philip Neri Beginnings Founded in 1840, the Church of St. Philip Neri became the ninth Catholic church in Philadelphia and its neighboring districts, Our parish is situated in the oldest part of Philadelphia, settled even before the arrival of William joining Old St. Joseph (1733), Old St. Mary (1763), Holy Trinity (1788), St. Augustine (1796), St. John the Evangelist (1830), Penn (1644-1718) on Oct. 28, 1682. The area surrounding the Church of St. Philip Neri became St. Michael (1831), St. Francis Xavier (1839) and St. Patrick (1839). It is one of the most historic institutions in the city of Phila- the new home of Swedish immigrants in the early 1600s, who serviced the burgeoning shipping delphia: industry at the city’s port as shipbuilders, rope and sail makers, chandlers, outfitters and other trades. Its earliest recorded name is Weccacoe (also spelled Wiacacoa, Wicaco, Wicoco) — from • The first church in the Philadelphia Archdiocese to be founded as a free church — relying on freewill contributions instead of pew rentals and annual fees, which were customarily collected from parishioners at other Catholic and Protestant churches the Lenni Lanape tribe’s word for “peaceful place.” Its name has changed twice since then. both in Europe and America. Catholics in Canada and in the United States, 1780-1820* by Luca CODIGNOLA University of Pisa In the years from the early 1780s to the early 1820s the flood of immigrants from Europe in both Canada and the United States, the movement of people within North America, and the settling of the Maritimes, Upper Canada, and the American territory west of the Appalachians deeply changed the nature and composition of the North American Catholic community.
