They both agree that [1] Bernard Brady, c. 60, formerly provincial of Ireland, is a good subject; [2] Stewart [Bonaventure Stewart], almost 50, currently provincial of Ireland, is also well known to the guardian of Collegio San Isidoro in Rome [James MacCormick]; [3] Patrick Lambert, almost 50, was formerly Guardian of Collegio San Isidoro [in 1783-4]. Since none of his companions is worth to be appointed bishop, he asks that the choice of a coadjutor be made by the archbishop of Dublin [John Thomas Troy]. The state of the diocese of Québec is peaceful, although the number of priests is insufficient for 180,000 Catholics. The faith, however, is weak in Québec and Montréal, whereas the state of religion in the countryside is better.
