CREATE YOUR FUTURE South Bank Express NEWSLETTER - SUMMER TERM Message from the Principal

Dear Parents / Carers and Friends of UAE,

As we come to the end of a very busy and unprecedented year, we're reminded of how highly we value all of the time we spend with the students at UAE and how we learn together. Our students consistently live up to the very high expectations that we set. Most importantly they show their deep understanding of our values; confidence, ambition and social responsibility. It has been lovely to hear accounts of how our students, your children, are making the best of the current very difficult situation.

I am sure you will join me in thanking all staff and governors for their extremely hard work during the year. Staff have undertaken an enormous amount of training to become experts in Google Classroom, they have been coming in to provide a space for key workers, they have made PPE equipment for local hospitals, they have bagged up and delivered food boxes to many of our families, they have been calling home to support your children with their work, they've been holding student forums to engage them in political issues of the day and they have been recording themselves dancing, doing sporting challenges, reading, analysing sonnets, miming and singing! I am so proud to lead such a dedicated, enthusiastic and hard-working staff.

Sadly some our staff are moving on to pastures new and I know you’ll join me in wishing them the best for the future. We are saying farewell to Mr Hussein, Mr Kamalathasan, Ms Jones, Ms Amreen, Mr Vora, Ms Stephens, Ms Hester and Mr Fiberesima. We also wish Ms Martinez the very best as she takes her maternity leave from September.

It leaves me finally to say thank you for all your support. You have been busy balancing maintaining safety, family life and an education for your children. This is not an easy task by any means and, as so many of our teaching and support staff have children at home, it is one with which we can fully empathise. The school has continued to function, to produce PPE face shields, to provide supervision for children of key workers and to provide online work and additional challenges for students only with your dedication and we are grateful.

For all families, we urge you to look after yourselves, and to develop and maintain routines and to support wellbeing. It is important to establish and continue routines around family life such as timings for getting up, dressing, eating, relaxing, working and socialising together. This can be hard with teenagers but it will make the transition back to school life much easier when the time comes. It will also make them happier.

Finally, we miss our students greatly, and although many have shown remarkable resilience, we are mindful that there will be repercussions from this period emotionally, socially and academically for them.

As a school, we will continue to address these with you and the students, at home and in school when we return in September.

Enjoy your break this Summer. We cannot wait to welcome our students back.

Since November we have been working with students on 'Decolonising our Curriculum' so that it is more representative of the community we serve and tells the truth about Britain's role in Colonialism.

We celebrated Black History Month with student led assemblies and a wonderful installation by our Art Department celebrating Black British artists. We have hosted the S.M.I.L.E project for a group of Year 9 Boys which aims to address damaging stereotypes of young black men and provide a safe space for our students to share their experiences. We have worked with Mentivity for over a year who have been doing some wonderful work in school by assisting us in mentoring our students. Last month, Mentivity were featured on the BBC for their work have in training police recruits against racial profiling. Our wonderful Teaching Assistants run a project called Young Girls Matter which aims to explore barriers that young women face and help empower them.

However, recent events have shed light on the continual injustices that many of our students and staff face every day and we believe we could do more to becoming an anti-racist school.

Actions we have taken so far: We have done a lot of listening, holding open forums for staff and students to share their experiences and feelings about Black Lives Matter. We have put together resource packs for students including reading, advice and discussion material Black Scientists Matter is an Instagram page set up by our science teachers to highlight the achievements of black scientists worldwide. We have put together a strategy document which identifies four strands of improvement we are committed to Our Curriculum should be culturally responsive and prepares students to be future change makers. All stakeholders within UAE should feel valued, respected and cared for All should have a chance to explore their identity and be seen and heard We will hold professional development sessions to ensure all staff are aware of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and build our skills on this We will ensure that we actively review and amend policies to ensure we are enacting equality of opportunity for all.

We plan to continue our work in September where students will lead on renaming our Houses - they will be able to choose people that inspire them. We will use form times and assemblies to discuss Black Lives Matter and create more spaces where students can share their concerns and experiences. We will have done even more work on our curriculum throughout Key Stage 3 so that it tells a story about all of us - you will be able to see new curriculum overviews for KS3 on our website shortly.

Our staff will be undertaking training in unconscious bias to ensure that we are highly skilled in promoting equality. We will be looking at ways we can work with local black businesses through Day 10 to inspire our young people and support our community (if you run or own a local business and would like to work with us - please contact [email protected]).

We have signed up to work with Citizens UK who are a community action group which involves young people in campaigning for change - we want to empower our young people to be the changemakers of the future. If you have any thoughts or suggestions about how we might further this work please do get in touch with our Vice Principal, Ms Moses [email protected]

We are committed to serving and supporting our local community and the incredible NHS staff working to fight the Coid-19 pandemic. We are extremly proud of the students who attended school at the start of lockdown and helped to collect over 50 goggles from science labs, giving them to NHS staff at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust who needed vital PPE equipment.

A massive well done to Mr Netsereab and Mr Fiberesima, who worked alongside Schools' Learning Partnership to create protective masks using 3D printing technology in school. They made over 50 masks to help protect our amazing NHS.

During lockdown we have been reading 'Refugee Boy' by Benjamin Zephaniah as an Academy.

Staff have been narrating chapters so that students can read along from their homes - you can catch up on our YouTube channel.

Alem is on holiday with his father for a few days in . He has never been out of Ethiopia before and is very excited.

One morning, Alem wakes up to discover his father has left him. A letter explains that because of the political problems in Ethiopia, Alem's parents feel he would be safer in London.

On his own in the hands of social services and the Refugee Council, Alem is waiting to hear from his father and his mother, who has gone missing.

One student has gone over and above during lockdown to contribute to UAE Southbank. Fikayomi has produced a number of videos helping teachers and students with feedback on the new remote learning that we've all been adapting to during lockdown.

He has also helped with the breakfast food boxes, has taken part in Debate Mate, representing our school and has shown his ambition and confidence in everything he does. Well done Fikayomi.

The students listed below completed more than 30 MathsWatch assignments in addition to the three days a week lessons and tasks they were expected to complete every week. It is amazing to see them working really hard during lockdown. Most of them achieved 100 percent for most of their assignments too.

I think they deserve recognition for their extreme hard work.

The community spirit shown by staff at UAE during lockdown has been wonderful to see and it really came to the fore on Thursday 2nd July when a small army of volunteers came together to support our families in a very practical way. We have linked up with 'School Food Matters' to provide healthy breakfast boxes for the families in our school community that are finding it particularly difficult during this time.

Over 20 staff turned up at short notice to pack the food into parcels and deliver them to homes of our families. We would like to thank all those who turned up to help but particular thanks must go to Mr Moore for organising the operation with military precision and Town Football club for the loan of their minibus (and Chairman!) to help with the deliveries.

The breakfast boxes will continue to be delivered throughout July and August to ensure that all our students and their families are able to start their day with a healthy meal.

Coach Bright is an award winning national social mobility organisation supporting the next generation to become independent and resilient so they can lead the lives they want. They worked with London South Bank University students to tutor Year 13s giving both the tools and behaviours to succeed.

Coach Bright also ran a training scheme for Year 12 A-level students to mentor Year 10s in the sixth form. This was a great showing students' how to add to CVs, university and apprenticeships in the future.

The virtual Induction Day gave students the opportunities to learn about what is on offer in our sixth form. Students and teachers had an outline of the day, which included: An Assembly, Taster lessons and Q & A.

Year 11 students could attend this from the comfort of their own home via 'google-meet' by simply clicking a link. Students had an opportunity to speak to staff members and ask questions. During this successful day, students had an opportunity to reflect on their subject options and attend various subjects of their choice. This was powerful as students could check to see if they had made the right choice and have discussions with staff about it.

In addition to this, students had a virtual tour that helped to see the fantastic facilities we have on offer and learn about the various enrichment programs we will be running next year.

At the start of Year 12, our students participate in a collective journey supporting their transition into sixth form and into young adulthood, beyond the academic curriculum, in partnership with the Visionaries. The students got to explore, learn more about the programme and its' ethos

The Sixth Form organised a three day trip to Rome for all interested current Year 12 and 13 students. For thousands of years, Rome has been the capital to some of the most important empires and nations in history. Our new annual international trip is an integral part of our Sixth Form offer. It helps students develop their independence and confidence, and enhances their understanding of the wider international community - enabling them to develop a global perspective and widening their horizons

This trip was packed with educational visits and was designed to inspire students to be inquisitive about the cultural, historical and religious heritage found in Rome. The school subsidised most of the costs, which meant that any students who were willing to attend, were able to do so.The students were accompanied by Mr Young (Head of Sixth Form and Miss Nolan (P.E. Teacher).

Day 1: Our staff and students were touring Vatican City. This encouraged students to develop a greater understanding of the religious centre of the Roman Catholic faith and admire the stunning architecture of St. Peter’s Basilica. This ended in tasting authentic Italian cuisine!

Day 2: On the second day of the trip, they toured the famous sites of Rome. From the Colosseum, to ‘gelataria’ and also tried some Italian ice cream (gelato).

Day 3: On the final day, they explored the Jewish District with a history dating as far back as 1555. They learnt how far-reaching the Nazi regime's beliefs had been. They explored the lives of Jewish families that had been taken to Auschwitz from their homes in the roman Jewish ghetto. To commemorate the Roman Jewish victims, many cities in Europe have placed gold plaques to ensure they are never forgotten.
