Two Palaces Across Three Centuries

The Crystal Palace in 1851 was the crowning achievement of the Victorian age, a symbol of Britain’s position as the world leader in industrial innovation and global discovery.

The Crystal Palace in the 21st century must be the crowning achievement of ’s position as the world’s creative capital, a global beacon for creative innovation and celebration.

The Crystal Palace and Park will be a place people go with a tingle of excitement, never a sense of duty.

Personal Context

Over the past twenty years I have: Bon Iver performing at Red Hill Auditorium Perth Jonathan Holloway and Srinivas Krishna, “My Name is Raj” ʰ +'4 (%*--*' $)/# 0'/0-'/-).!*-(/$*)*!/# and London’s South Bank … ʰ /& )*-!*'&ʿ*-2$# ./$1'ʐ 0/$!0'0/.('''..$' (0.$ ./$1'/* /# /#$- '-" ./$/4-/.! ./$1'$)/# ʙ ʰ )-/$./$$- /*-*! -/# ./$1') ʞ*)ɾ-( $/.+' . /# )/$*)ʝ.$"" ./))0'-/.%(*- ʟʱ# 0./-'$)ʲʏ

This set of roles has meant that since the late 1990s I have been in the rare position of travelling the world to see how great spaces and people work, building relationships, unlocking possibilities through vision and leadership. It is within this context that I say that I believe that The Crystal Palace holds the greatest opportunity in the world to …

… create a world recognisable landmark building … … in an area of London ripe for transformation … … which has a unique and much needed purpose … … connecting with the people of London and the world … … through a programme to refect the world we live in … … which will beg the question …

The frst visit is the easy bit, but if we are to create a constantly relevant and compelling destination for the next ffty years we need to deliver more than that. We must build a creative hothouse, a cultural engine room, a rallying place where the world’s artists, thinkers and creatives can have their biggest ideas whilst meeting the people for whom they create.

The main thing we see from history is the need for clarity and simplicity of vision. The site is small and the building fnite, but the lifespan and possibilities are seemingly infnite, and so there is the need for one idea - creativity - to be central in order to defne what The Crystal Palace and Park are.

An artists impression of the new Crystal Palace Confdential 5 THE VISION The Crystal Palace

The Crystal Palace will be a beacon for creativity, a muster point for brilliance and those who wish to encounter it. The Crystal Palace and Park will be a place to which people go with a tingle of excitement, never a sense of duty and which, like London, will be for everyone.

The world since then has changed beyond recognition, the store of human knowledge increases even faster than the population and our ability to access everything, everyone and everywhere is unparalleled.

The original Crystal Palace was built in a time before mass travel and the internet, to bring the world’s wonders to the masses.

In a time of digitally encouraged solitude and the ability to do most things without leaving home, what people need today is a place which harnesses both the bandwidth possible through technology and depth of group experience.

We need to move forward with clarity and excitement using collective activities that make sense of the white noise, and individual spaces to help us understand the world.

We need to respond to the need to make life more inspiring and comprehensible by creating a beacon for creativity in .

Only in London

The Crystal Palace and Park are uniquely placed to be the world’s muster point for brilliance and those who wish to encounter it.

Whilst there are many arts venues and architectural destinations in the world, The Crystal Palace and Park’s potential combination of world-class architecture and horticulture flled with creative labs, performance and exhibition spaces, hotel rooms, restaurants, gardens, events and festivals will make it unique. No-where else on earth has this combination, added to which it is in the world’s most creative city.

London – above all other world cities – has proved the meeting point for the brilliant, the curious and the ambitious for many centuries, and now more than ever:

By placing creativity at the centre of everything the Palace and Park does, we can allow for three fundamental stories to be told:

To achieve this we need to adopt an ethos of constant temporary transformation.

The Ethos of Constant Temporary Transformation

Constantly changing temporary transformations and activities can bring about permanent change.

Beside the fabric of the building and park, we will work on a cycle of change ranging from one month to three years, but with an average change time of six months.

The Crystal Palace is not a place to pause and refect, it is a place to ignite and take of.

We will work with artists and creators hitting personal best. We will avoid the tyranny of formulaic year-on-year programming. The Crystal Palace will simply present extraordinary creative artists and events to eager audiences when it must do so. All killer, no fller.
