A TH!l MPII in eve1y respect, Man q/Lc1Man cha is one of the most hono red musicals of the Ameri ca n theatre. Winner of the cw Yo rk Dra ma riti cs' Circle Award as best musical of th e 1965-66 season, it also recieved fi ve To ny Awards, incl uding o n ' for best musical play, the Outer Circl e award , and three citatio ns in Vc, riety '.~ Poll of e \J Yo rk Drama Critics. Ope ning on ovember 22, 1965, it ran for 2,328 pe rformances in its o ri ginal engageme nt. In the summer of 1972 it was revived ( with the sa me principal pe rforme rs) at the Vivian Beaumo nt Theatre, Lincoln Center for 140 ca pacity pe rformances. It has been produced a ll aro und the wo rld and was made into a moti on picture (released in 1972) with Peter O 'Toole and Sophia Lo ren. Dale Wasserman got the idea forMan ofLa Mc, nchawhen he was in in 1959. A lo 'al newspaper printed an articl e stating his purpose in was to do research for a dramatization of Don Q11i.Yote. Tho ugh the article was incorrect (Wasserman had neve r eve n r •ad the book), it inspired him to read it w hile he was in Spain . Since ervantes' death in 1616, more than 200 theatri cal adaptatio ns of Do 11 Quixote have been made including o peras, ba ll ets, and play. llowever, when Wasserman fini shed the masterpiece, he was convinced "that th is monument 10 human wit and fo ll y could not, and sho uld not, be dramatized. ,. Sti ll , Wasserman found himself intrigued with its author. He began researching the life of . What he found was a life full of cataMrophes. "What sort of man was this-soldier, playwri ght, actor, tax-coll ector and frequent jailbird-who could suffe r unc •asing fa ilure and yet in his declining yea rs produce th e staggering t 'Stamcnl which is Don Quixote?" The re are many gr •at writers w hose lives have left only a few traces upon th •ir work. This is not so with erva ntes: his biography sheds li ght uro n his masterpieces. He not o nl y made good use of his expe ri ence, he went so far as to include himself, as a mino r chara te r, in seve ra l of his wo rks. Wasserman had fo und his angle. I le decided a real sto1y existed and could he to ld by ble nding the lives of th , real e rva ntes and his fi cti o nal ·'Kni ght of the Woeful Counte nance." The first uy resulted in a ninety-minute tel evision version, which was nominated for an Emmy in 1960. Unsatisfi ed with the result , Wasserman adapted the tel c pl ay into a stage play. Wass •1rnan was unhappy with the work, but it was immediately o ptio ned. [ loweve r, the o ptio n expired before it ever went into r roducti on.
