FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 22, 2018 Contact: Sarah Mills Bacha 614.563.1066 Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Aspects of Love at CATCO May 30-June 17 Chamber musical by one of musical theatre’s legends explores the many forms of love Love takes many forms – love between couples; romantic infatuation; the devotion of married people; and the ties of children to their parents. This chamber musical, written by one of contemporary musical theatre’s icons, Andrew Lloyd Webber, who gave us beloved classics, such as Phantom of the Opera and Evita, examines all of them. “Love Changes Everything” is the theme song of this musical first produced in 1989 in London and based upon a 1955 novella written by David Garnett, and “nothing in the world will ever be the same.” Aspects of Love, with book and music by Webber and lyrics by Don Black and Charles Hart, is presented through special arrangement with R&H Theatricals: www.rnh.com “Aspects of Love is one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s lesser known works because it was produced after his blockbuster works of the 1970s and 1980s, but it is no less memorable with beautiful romantic lyrics and music, hallmarks of Webber musicals,” said Steven C. Anderson, CATCO producing director, who will direct CATCO’s chamber production. “If you loved the music of Phantom of the Opera, Cats and Evita and other works by Webber, you won’t want to miss CATCO’s presentation of Aspects of Love,” Anderson, said. CATCO will perform Aspects of Love, May 30-June 17, 2018, in the Studio One Theatre at the Vern Riffe Center, 77 S.

April 1 & 3, 2021 Walt Disney Theater FAIRWINDS GROWS MY MONEY SO I CAN GROW MY BUSINESS. Get the freedom to go further. Insured by NCUA. OPERA-2646-02/092719 Opera Orlando’s Carmen On the MainStage at Dr. Phillips Center | April 2021 Dear friends, Carmen is finally here! Although many plans have changed over the course of the past year, we have always had our sights set on Carmen, not just because of its incredible music and compelling story but more because of the unique setting and concept of this production in particular - 1960s Haiti. So why transport Carmen and her friends from 1820s Seville to 1960s Haiti? Well, it all just seemed to make sense, for Orando, that is. We have a vibrant and growing Haitian-American community in Central Florida, and Creole is actually the third most commonly spoken language in the state of Florida. Given that Creole derives from French, and given the African- Carribean influences already present in Carmen, setting Carmen in Haiti was a natural fit and a great way for us to celebrate Haitian culture and influence in our own community. We were excited to partner with the Greater Haitian American Chamber of Commerce for this production and connect with Haitian-American artists, choreographers, and academics. Since Carmen is a tale of survival against all odds, we wanted to find a particularly tumultuous time in Haiti’s history to make things extra difficult for our heroine, and setting the work in the 1960s under the despotic rule of Francois Duvalier (aka Papa Doc) certainly raised the stakes.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------ By Jeeves Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber Lyrics: Alan Ayckbourn Book: Alan Ayckbourn Premiere: Tuesday, April 22, 1975 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Code of the Woosters BERTIE I obey the Code of the Woosters. It's a simple philosophy. When perhaps a chap's in trouble. I respond with alacrity. And if my fellow men have problems Whatever they might be They call on me The sterling Wooster B. For despite This easy nature Come the evening When battle dawns To see a Wooster Grab the livestock by both the horns For when a Wooster's mask of pleasure Becomes a steely stare You'll know he's there He'll never turn a hair What would a chap do without it? How would he get through without it? How could he stay true wihtout the Code of the Woosters? If you're at sea, I shall be there, even put off tea to be there Woosters have swum oceans for the Code of Allegiance duly owed to the Wooster Code What a load If a girl Is in the doldrums Not a paddle To her name I'll be there Though frankly speaking Womanizing's not my game But if she's really in a lather Wild eyed and hat askew He'll see her through Old you know who... Whenever it calls, can't ignore it, even give up Ascot for it Woosters have died gladly for the code of For that rugged, heavy load called the Wooster Code What a load Take my card In case you need me, if you're jousting a losing cause Like the chap Who wins the double I can rattle The natural laws So if you're eaten up with anguish I'll snatch you from its jaws No second's pause From one sincerely yours..

  • Cole Porter: the Social Significance of Selected Love Lyrics of the 1930S
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Unisa Institutional Repository Cole Porter: the social significance of selected love lyrics of the 1930s by MARILYN JUNE HOLLOWAY submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS in the subject of ENGLISH at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA SUPERVISOR: PROFESSOR IA RABINOWITZ November 2010 DECLARATION i SUMMARY This dissertation examines selected love lyrics composed during the 1930s by Cole Porter, whose witty and urbane music epitomized the Golden era of American light music. These lyrics present an interesting paradox – a man who longed for his music to be accepted by the American public, yet remained indifferent to the social mores of the time. Porter offered trenchant social commentary aimed at a society restricted by social taboos and cultural conventions. The argument develops systematically through a chronological and contextual study of the influences of people and events on a man and his music. The prosodic intonation and imagistic texture of the lyrics demonstrate an intimate correlation between personality and composition which, in turn, is supported by the biographical content. KEY WORDS: Broadway, Cole Porter, early Hollywood musicals, gays and musicals, innuendo, musical comedy, social taboos, song lyrics, Tin Pan Alley, 1930 film censorship ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I should like to thank Professor Ivan Rabinowitz, my supervisor, who has been both my mentor and an unfailing source of encouragement; Dawie Malan who was so patient in sourcing material from libraries around the world with remarkable fortitude and good humour; Dr Robin Lee who suggested the title of my dissertation; Dr Elspa Hovgaard who provided academic and helpful comment; my husband, Henry Holloway, a musicologist of world renown, who had to share me with another man for three years; and the man himself, Cole Porter, whose lyrics have thrilled, and will continue to thrill, music lovers with their sophistication and wit.
