The following contributed by Martin Quinn: He was a brilliant chess player and beat the reigning world champion Emanuel Lasker in a game in 1898. He was described in his obituary by T R Dawson as ‘a powerful mathematician, third wrangler of his year [third in the mathematical graduation list at Cambridge], and a brilliant chess problem analyst.’ Most of his composition was in the field of fairy chess, where Dawson rated him very highly indeed. He played on top board for Cornwall, and as an endgame analyst he was correspondingly strong if not quite in the class of Grigoriev. He played County Chess for Cornwall where he went on to win the County Championships for 1912, 1913 and 1914. Sterndale Bennett, teach music. Charles married Maria in 1877 and they had three children: Charles Tate Regan (1878-1943), Mary Grace Regan (1879-) and Constance Julia Regan (1880-1957). Charles Tate Regan was educated at Derby (where J.R. Sterndale Bennett had gone as Headmaster) and Queen's College, Cambridge. Charles was made a Fellow of the Royal Society and was Director of the Natural History Museum 1927-1938. Charles Regan retired in 1911. In 1942, Louis Napoleon Parker recalled that after Regan left Sherborne he had to make his living in theatrical orchestras in London where he had to wear a black wig to gain employment.
