DESCRIPTION Hammoon House was built in 1893 and has stuccoed elevations under a slate roof with mainly sash windows. In the 1890s the second Viscount Portman who built Bryanston also built three hunting lodges nearby, one of which is Hammoon House. The house was built to face down the valley rather than into the village to welcome and provide a lunch rest and opportunity for the family to change horses. It remained part of the Portman Estate until 1923 when it became part of a large lotted sale when the Portman Estate was broken up. For some 45 years after the Second World War the distinguished ornithologist, Angela Hughes lived in Hammoon House and she was involved in reintroducing the otter to the River Stour. Hammoon House provides beautifully proportioned accommodation with the high ceilings, attractive cornicing and open fireplaces expected in a house of this period. The front door opens into a porch which in turn opens through to the reception hall with the drawing room and dining room to either side with bay windows to the front of the house. The sitting room and breakfast room are beyond with the latter linking directly through to both the kitchen and dining room. An inner hall gives access to a superb orangery as well as linking through to the cloakroom, utility room, boot room and a large back hall which is used as the day-to- day entrance. The main landing leads to the master bedroom with its adjoining dressing room and bathroom and two further bedrooms. A half-staircase leads to the rear landing with three further bedrooms, two with en suite bath/shower rooms, a sixth bedroom and the family bathroom. On the second floor there are two further bedrooms and a shower room.

THE COACH HOUSE The Coach House has been converted to provide a ground floor garage and studio with kitchenette and space for a bath/shower room. On the first floor is a spacious games rooms. GARDENS AND GROUNDS The house is approached through double gates which open onto a gravel driveway, adjacent to the coach house and to the north west of the house. The gardens are mainly to the south and west of the house and are predominantly laid to lawn with well stocked herbaceous beds and borders and a paved terrace. There is a large garden store with loft space above it. A walled garden contains the heated swimming pool with pool house. To the front of the house is a ha-ha, separating the gardens from a series of three meadows which lead down to the River Stour. The river has single bank fishing over approximately 854 yards.
