Over the course of the Christmas holiday, you will notice the presence of three men studying for the priesthood serving on the altar. In addition to our own Nicholas Magarelli who continues his pastoral year here at the Cathedral, we will also have Thomas Fetz, OFM Conv. and Andy O’Leary. Both Nicholas and Andy are seminarians studying for the Diocese of Spokane and Thomas is a Franciscan.

Friar Thomas Fetz was ordained a deacon on September 30, 2020 at the National Shrine of St. at Marytown, Illinois. He is the son of Cathedral parishioners Brian and Colleen Fetz. He will be serving as a deacon and preaching at various Masses and I am happy to welcome him back to his home parish.

Mr. Andy O’Leary is on his Christmas break from St. Patrick in Menlo Park, California. He will also be assisting around the parish for the next two weeks. Andy is scheduled to be ordained a deacon here at the Cathedral on May 29, 2021. He is a fine man and will be a great deacon and, God willing, a for our diocese.

Mr. Nicholas Magarelli is, of course, continuing his pastoral work in our parish. He will be with us for another few months before he moves on to study . This has been a difficult year for him because of the COVID restrictions on personal interactions but he is doing a great job nonetheless.

It is a and an inspiration to have these men with us during Christmas. Please point out these future to your children (especially your sons) and pray together for them and an increase in to the priesthood and .

Asking for the prayers of Our Lady of Lourdes, I remain,

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Darrin Connall, VG Rector

F F!

We would like to invite you to participate in a finance course that will change the way you live, relate to your spouse, and allow you to give generously! My name is Kevin Cary and together with my wife, Jami, we will facilitate a nine week course in Financial Peace University taught by Dave Ramsey. We've been members of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes for almost 11 years and would like to give back by teaching other people about FPU.

Many years ago I was skeptical going into a big FPU LIVE event hosted at the convention center. I actually pulled Jami out mid-session and left because I thought we were listening to a guy hawking products! (“spend money to save money... just buy my book and you'll be rich!”) I was really wrong! Later on, Jami read one of Dave's books and told me, “You'd better read this.” For the last 16 years we've followed the baby steps that Dave teaches about in FPU. It hasn't always been easy, but getting on a budget, sticking to it, and having shared goals we strive for means money isn't a stressor for us - and we really want to pass along that financial freedom to others.

The first of nine sessions is Sunday, January 17th at 6:30 pm. For questions or to sign up, call (509) 863-4936 or email me at [email protected].

Lighting the Advent Wreath

During the fourth week of Advent, the father prays:

“O Lord, stir up Your power, we pray to You, and come; and with great might help us, that with the help of Your grace, Your merciful forgiveness may hasten what our sins impede. Who lives and reigns forever. Amen.”

The father then lights all of the candles of the wreath.

4 Scriptural Reflection December 20, 2020 — Fourth Sunday of Advent 2 SM 7:1-5, 8B-12, 14A, 16; PS 89:2-5, 27, 29; ROM 16:25-27; LK 1:26-38

There are just five days left until the celebration of Christmas begins. Let’s live these last days of Advent well.

We read in today’s passage from Luke the wonderful words of the Blessed Mother's “fiat,” her “yes” to God’s plan. “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” These are among the most beloved words in the Gospel. But the next sentence is also important for the Christian steward.

After Mary’s fiat, we read, “Then the departed from her.” Our Blessed Mother was left with a lot of unexplained details about God’s plan for her! Yet, she followed God’s will perfectly. She gave herself and her life fully to God as a gift. She was the first . We are called to follow her example today.

This Christmas let us resolve to make our whole life a gift to the One Who has given us everything. He will give us all the help and strength we need.
