Episcopal Church Style Guide The official name of the church is The Episcopal Church. When writing about the Episcopal Church, please follow these guidelines: * In the first reference, the full name of the church is preferred: The Episcopal Church. * When referring to church members, the term “Episcopalians” is preferred. We elect a Presiding Bishop, who is our chief pastor and primate of the church. Chosen by the House of Bishops from one of its members, the Presiding Bishop serves for nine years, or until normal retirement age, if that occurs first. In formal usage, he or she is known as “The Most Reverend”,” usually abbreviated to “The Most Rev.” His or her first name (or preferred forename) is always used, together with an initial if applicable (e.g., “The Most Rev. John A. Smith”, or “The Most Rev. A. John Smith”). All other bishops should be addressed as above, but using the form “The Rt. Rev.” Priests and deacons are referred to as “The Rev.” Our church is organized into dioceses, and there is at least one diocese in each state. However, some states have two or more dioceses. For example, we have a Diocese of New Jersey, but in the northern part of the state there is a Diocese of Newark. Likewise, there is a Diocese of Texas, but there are several other dioceses in that state. A CONTROVERSIAL PATH TO THE CREATION OF THE AUTOCEPHALOUS ORTHODOX CHURCH IN UKRAINE Sergei A. Mudrov Polotsk State University, Department of Social Communications, Belarus. Email: [email protected] Abstract: This article analyses the establishment of the autocephalous Orthodox Church in Ukraine. It explains the main steps that were taken in Ukraine towards obtaining auto- cephaly for the Orthodox Church, namely for two non-canonical groups — ‘Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church’ and ‘Ukrainian Orthodox Church -- Kiev Patriarchate’, which formally merged in December 2018. A special attention is devoted to the analysis of the events in 2018, starting from the April 2018 request of the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, addressed to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomeos. I argue that the move towards autocephaly was dictated primarily by politico-ideological reasons and was accom- panied by the rise of confrontation and a lack of cooperation. The majority of Orthodox, belonging to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), opposed this process, which made them the subject of intimidation campaigns. It appears that in Ukraine there is an ongoing process of constructing a “radical other”, and much effort is being devoted to making the Ukrainian Orthodox Church this “radical other”, since the actions of this Church have been often interpreted in the most negative ways. Overall, the move towards autocephaly, instead of uniting Ukrainians, has brought about new dividing lines in Ukraine and has contributed to the split in global Orthodoxy. Just the idea of being in person with family and friends is a sea change. Gathering for cookouts and fireworks will be a great joy. We are blessed to live in a country with the many freedoms that we sometimes take for granted. One of our greatest gifts is religious liberty. It is not lost on me that having spent nearly a year and a half in so much isolation due to the pandemic, the fact that we can come together and worship, praising God in our communities is no small thing. Receiving the news from the Archbishop that we will once again host the Eucharistic Congress on June 17-18, 2022, the 25th Archdiocesan Congress, has been a real cause for celebration. Y’all will be hearing more from me on that soon! As we begin this Summer, my prayer is that all of you and your families will be safe. I pray that you will have time to gather with others to catch up and rekindle relationships that may have been strained with the stresses of the last many months. I imagine that many of you, like me and mine, will be heading to the beach or mountains for some rest and relaxation. -

LEAGUE OF NATIONS ORGANISATION FOR COMMUNICATIONS AND TRANSIT STABILISATION OF MOVABLE FEASTS SUMMARY OF REPLIES FROM RELIGIOUS AUTHORITIES TO THE LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS COMMUNICATING THE ACT REGARDING THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL ASPECTS OF FIXING MOVABLE FEASTS I. — COMMUNICATION OF THE ACT TO THE RELIGIOUS AUTHORITIES. According to the instructions of the Council, the Secretary-General brought the Act regarding the economic and social aspects of fixing movable feasts, adopted by the Fourth General Conference on Communications and Transit, to the notice of the Christian Religious Authorities, asking them to consider as favourably as possible what action they could “take in the matter. As far as the Holy See is concerned, the Act was communicated by letter from the Secretary-General of the League to the Secretary of State of His Holiness on November 16th, As regards Christian Churches other than the Roman Catholic Church, a request was addressed on November 16th, 1932, to the President of the Universal Christian Council for Life and Work, to which all these Churches are affiliated, asking him to bring the above-mentioned Act to their knowledge and to inform the Secretary-General of the League of the views expressed by the Churches in the matter. II. — RESULTS OF THE ENQUIRY. 1. — Attitude of the Holy See. By letter dated December 30th, 1932, Cardinal Pacelli informed the Secretary-General that the Holy bee maintains the point of view already expressed in previous communications — i.e., that the stabilisation of Easter is a pre-eminently religious question which falls within the competence of the Holy See and that, for reasons of higher spiritual concern, the Holy ?>ee cannot contemplate a change in this matter. -

The female superior of a community of nuns appointed by a bishop; Mother Superior. She has general authority over her community and nunnery under the supervision of a bishop. Abbot. (from Aram. abba , father; Gr. Hegoumenos , Sl. Nastoyatel ). The head of a monastic community or monastery, appointed by a bishop or elected by the members of the community. He has ordinary jurisdiction and authority over his monastery, serving in particular as spiritual father and guiding the members of his community. Abstinence. (Gr. Nisteia ). A penitential practice consisting of voluntary deprivation of certain foods for religious reasons. In the Orthodox Church, days of abstinence are observed on Wednesdays and Fridays, or other specific periods, such as the Great Lent (see fasting). Acolyte. The follower of a priest; a person assisting the priest in church ceremonies or services. The Great and Holy Synod And Why It is Important for Orthodoxy (continued) The Great and Holy Council—June 2016 There are significant logistics associated with a meeting like this. First, each “Autocephalous” Church will be allowed to be represented by up to 24 Bishops. So, that means 24 Bishops under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarch will participate, and 24 (out of more than 800) bishops under the Patriarchate of Moscow will participate, etc. Thus, there can be equal representation from all the churches. (Oriental Orthodox Churches will not be participating in this Synod because they are not in communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate). There will also be observers from the Roman Catholic and some Protestant Churches. With the potential of hundreds of hierarchs and their delegations, with translators, researchers, writers, etc., and with the need to record these events for posterity, there is a lot of infrastructure issues to be worked through. There were initially ten agenda items to be discussed, with sub-items under each topic. These topics had been discussed in gatherings of Orthodox Bishops beginning in 1977. The initial ten items included: a. Orthodox Diaspora b. Autocephaly and its manner of proclamation c. Autonomy and its manner of proclamation d. The Diptychs e. The matter of a common calendar f. Impediments of marriage g. Adaptation of church regulations on fasting h. Relations of the Orthodox Churches with the rest of the Christian world i. Orthodoxy and the Ecumenical Movement j. Contribution of the local Orthodox Church to the prevalence of the Christian ideals of peace, liberty, brotherhood and love among people, and the lifting of racial and other discrimination. -

ABOUT THE DIACONATE WHAT IS A DEACON? A deacon is one of three distinct orders of ordained ministers (bishops, priests, deacons) in the Episcopal Church. Within the Anglican Communion, an individual becomes a deacon by being ordained by a bishop after having completed a course of study and formation. This is in contrast to other traditions that use the title for lay persons elected to responsible governing positions in their churches. THE CHARGE TO A DEACON AT ORDINATION God now calls you to a special ministry of servanthood directly under your bishop. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are to serve all people, particularly the poor, the weak, the sick, and the lonely. As a deacon in the Church, you are to study the Holy Scriptures, to seek nourishment from them, and to model your life upon them. You are to make Christ and his redemptive love known, by word and example, to those among whom you live, and work, and worship. You are to interpret to the Church the needs, concerns, and hopes of the world. You are to assist the bishop and priests in public worship and in the ministration of God's Word and Sacraments, and you are to carry out other duties assigned to you from time to time. At all times, your life and teaching are to show Christ's people that in serving the helpless they are serving Christ himself. St. Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria, glory of the Eastern Church and celebrated champion of the Virgin Mother of God, has always been held by the Church in the highest esteem, and We welcome the opportunity of recalling his merits in this brief Letter, now that fifteen centuries have passed since he happily exchanged this earthly exile for his heavenly home. 2.
