Memory Eternal: Catherine Perme, Rose Marie Webster, Archpriest Mark Gomez, Dimitria Manuel. *****Biography on Metropolitan Jonah ***** Metropolitan Jonah was born James Paffhausen in Chicago, in a German American family in the Episcopal Church. The family lived in Chicago, two years in Los Angeles, and then finally settled in San Diego. Met. Jonah went to La Jolla High, then University of California San Diego; then finished his BA in Anthropology at UC Santa Cruz. During his second year of university, he found the Russian Orthodox Church and was received at age 19, in 1978. After college, he entered St Vladimir’s Seminary, finishing two degrees, a Master of Divinity and Master of Theology in Dogmatics. After working in real estate finance for a few years, and for the OCA Diocese of the West, he resumed studies toward a doctorate in Theology in Berkeley. He was choir director then deacon at St Nicholas, Saratoga, CA. He interrupted studies and went to Russia for most of 1993, living in Moscow first, and then becoming a novice at Valaam Monastery. He returned to the US at the end of the year, and was subsequently ordained hierodeacon in February and hieromonk in October, 1994, and was assigned to St Mary Magdalene Mission, in Merced, California. He also served as a circuit riding mission priest, working to establish several missions. In 1996, he received the blessing to start a monastery, and founded the Monastery of St John of San Francisco in Pt Reyes Station, Marin County, CA. In 2006 the Monastery moved to Manton on Mt Lassen, CA. In 2008 he was elected auxiliary bishop to the Archbishop of Dallas, Dmitri, but was quickly (10 days) elected Metropolitan of the OCA. He served in that position for 4 years, and stepped down in July, 2012. Since that time, he has served at St John the Baptist Cathedral, and officially was received into ROCOR in June, 2015.He also serves the Holy Archangels Orthodox Foundation, with a home chapel and weekly Liturgies. Class on Acts Starting on Wednesday evening, September 13, we will begin a new Bible Study class on the Book of Acts. We will focus on the life of the early Church, and augment the text with readings from contemporary writers and early Church Fathers, as well as historical work from modern scholarship. Everyone is welcome! No prerequisites! This should be a great way both to study the Scriptures, as well as build community. Catechumens and inquirers are very welcome. Invitation to John Theophilos Milligan's Baptism The Milligan family would like to invite the parish to attend the baptism of their son John next week, Sunday, September 24, at 9 a.m. Announcements The meeting of the Sisterhood of Myrrhbearing Women has been rescheduled from Sunday, September 17 to Sunday, September 24. This will be a short meeting to talk about our plans for the Aquia Festival and planning for projects for next year. Every woman in the congregation is a Sisterhood member, so we look forward to seeing all of you on September 24. Sisterhood meeting: September 24th . Our current teams are as follows: Please e-mail Nancy at 1st Sunday: [email protected] if you have any concerns or Team 1: Mat. Kathleen, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Beth and topics that you wish to bring up for discussion. Dues are Melissa. $25.00 for the year. All parish women are welcome to 2nd Sunday: attend the meeting but only paid members are allowed to vote on issues. Team 2: Gina(?), Sarah(?), Palmer and the Milligan’s. 3rd Sunday: Coffee Hour: We need volunteers to help with our Coffee and Fellowship time and anyone is welcome to help. Team 3: Nancy, Stella, Caitlin and Dena. 4th Sunday: Team 2 needs at least one more member, preferably two, Team 4: Mat. Joanna, Judith, Veronica and Lori. for September 10 and the following months. 5th Sunday: Potluck Coffee Hours needs Critical need: Because the church does not have trash pickup we always need volunteers who will take a bag or two of trash with them after fellowship time. ***********ALSO********* Some cans of coffee will be greatly appreciated to continue with our wonderful after-service tradition! .

McCoog, SJ It would have been much to the interests of the Church if her history had not included the story of such difficulties as those which are the subject of this chapter. Her internal dissensions, whether on a large or small scale, bear the same relation to the evils inflicted on her from without, as diseases do to wounds won in honourable fight. Thus did Edwin H. Burton open the chapter ‘The Difficulties between the Vicars Apostolic and the Regulars’ in his work on Bishop Challoner.1 The absence of such opposition may have made the history of the post-Reforma- tion Roman Catholic Church in England more edifying, but surely would also have deprived subsequent scholars of fascinating material for dissertations and monographs. In his doctoral thesis Eamon Duffy remarked that, although tension between Jesuits and seculars was less than in previous centuries, ‘the bitterness … which remained was all pervasive … No Catholic in England escaped untouched’.2 Basil Hemphill, having noted that ‘most unfortunate jealousies persisted between the secular and the regular clergy … and with an intensity which seems incredible to us today’, considered their explication essential if history wished to be truthful ‘and if it be not truthful it is of no use at all’.3 A brief overview of uneasy, volatile and tense relations between Jesuits and secular clergy in post-Reformation England will contextualize the eigh- teenth-century problem. 1 Edwin H.

    Prayer Requests Weekly Saint John Moleben - Submit Names You may provide a list of names of your relatives and friends that you wish to have commemorated at the weekly moleben service to Saint John in front of his relics. This can be done by filling out the form below and submitting it prior to the deadline indicated below. Guideline for Submitting Names for Commemoration The moleben is served every Saturday at 5:30pm Pacific. In order to have your names read by the clergy present at the moleben you must submit your list by NO LATER than FRIDAY at 3:00pm Pacific ( check current time in San Francisco). Any names received AFTER 3:00pm Pacific on FRIDAY will only be read the following week . Orthodox names submitted will also be commemorated at the Divine Liturgy the following day (Sunday).     ARCHPRIEST BONIFACE H. BLACK MEMORIAL WEEKEND AUGUST 12-13, 2017 COMMEMORATIVE BOOK FEATURING SAYINGS AND REMEMBRANCES Abbot Joseph was received into the Holy Orthodox Church by Fr. Boniface at St. Philip's. He attended St. Vladimir's Seminary for one year. In July of 1986 he was ordained a deacon by His Grace Bishop Antoun in St. Mary's Church, Johnstown, PA. He was ordained a priest on August 3 of the same year by His Grace Bishop Antoun in St. Philip's Church, then located in Horsham. He was tonsured to the Little Schema in 1991, and then to the Great Schema in 2008 by Metropolitan Maximos of Pittsburgh in the Monastery of St. Gregory Palamas. Abbot Joseph is currently the abbot of St. Gregory Palamas Monastery in Perrysville Ohio, the monastery of his repentance. Although in the monastic life Abbot Joseph is a spiritual son of Fr. Roman (Braga), he had previously been a spiritual son of Fr. Boniface from his young adulthood until the time of his entrance into the monastic life, and credits any fruitfulness in his own ministry to the teaching, example, and prayers of Fr. Boniface Black.     Twenty-five U.S. bishops may retire WASHINGTON (CNS) — Up to 25 U.S. bishops, including five cardinals, could retire because of age this year. There are 14 still-active U.S. bishops, including three cardinals, who have already turned 75. Eleven more, including two cardinals, will celebrate their 75th birthday in 2007. At age 75 bishops are requested to submit their resignation to the pope. Cardinal Adam J. Maida of Detroit turned 75 March 18, 2005. He was bishop of Green Bay, Wis., before he was made archbishop of Detroit in 1990. He has been a cardinal since 1994. Cardinal William H. Keeler of Baltimore turned 75 last March 4. Formerly bishop of Harrisburg, Pa., he has been archbishop of Baltimore since 1989 and a cardinal since 1994. Cardinal Bernard F. Law, archpriest of St. Mary Major Basilica in Rome and a cardinal since 1985, turned 75 Nov. 4. A former bishop of Springfield-Cape Girardeau, Mo., he was archbishop of Boston from 1984 until his resignation in 2002 in the wake of the clergy sex abuse scandal there. He was named to his Rome post in 2004. Cardinal Edward M. Egan of New York, whose 75th birthday is coming up April 2, will celebrate 50 years as a priest later this year.
