Among the latest is Commodities and Colonialism: The Story of Big Sugar in Indonesia, 1880-1940, published by Brill in Leiden and Boston in 2013. He is currently working on a 'business biography' — based on scores of his newly discovered letters back home — of Gillian Maclaine, a young Scot who was active as a planter and merchant in colonial Java during the 1820s and 1830s. For a change, it has almost nothing to do with sugar. Criminal law, local elites and legal pluralities in colonial Java Issue Date: 2018-02-27 3 — Laws of Java The dual legal system with its pluralistic courts that had been anchored in early nineteenth-century Java was founded on the core principle that the Javanese population would be adjudicated according to their “own” laws and customs, insofar as these were as they were not in contradiction with “the general principles of equity and justice”.1 There are two complicated aspects to this phrase, which led to much ambiguity. First, it remained vague about what the “general principles of equity and justice” were.2 Second, it was unclear what the “native laws and customs” of Java were exactly. There was simply no agreement on this among the Javanese themselves. Regional differences and a multitude of religions and legal traditions made this an incredibly complicated question—impossible in fact—to answer. In spite of these ambiguities, legal codification remained a primary goal for the Dutch. This chapter discusses the efforts to codify criminal law in colonial Java. In doing this, I will focus on two aspects: the extent to which legal pluralities occurred in the codification of colonial criminal law in Java, and the influence of (a lack of) local informants consulted by Dutch officials drafting the codifications. 3.1 The VOC Compendia, 1602–1799 Although VOC contracts with local rulers generally emphasized that religious groups would retain their own laws and rituals, in practice VOC 1 The principle was constituted in the 1819 Provisional Regulations, article 121, and in the 1854 Colonial Constitution, article 75. -

Zentgraaff: Atjeh De heer Zentgraaff, hoofdredacteur van de Java-Bode, heeft in dit boek de rug toegekeerd aan zijn gewone bedrijf om de smaak terug te vinden van een heroïscher verleden. Voorts omdat hij andere geschriften over hetzelfde onderwerp-als Met klewang en karabijn-‘prutsboekjes’ vond. Tenslotte waarschijnlijk omdat hij op zijn manier ‘professeur d'énergie’ wilde zijn. Nu er zoveel werk aan de winkel dreigt te komen, in het militaire, kan de jeugd dit best gebruiken, dit stichtelijk en vereenvoudigd heroïsme, want voor de jeugd werd dit boek wel in de eerste plaats bedoeld. De heer Z. is en compareert als vermaard Atjeh-kenner en verzwijgt zijn lezers niettemin zo resoluut de helft van zijn kennis, dat hij hen ongeveer gelijk moet stellen met onmondigen. En dan, hij betoont zich zó gesteld op een epos over Van Daalen's tocht, over de ‘streep van bloed en ijzer’ die deze latere legercommandant door een deel van Atjeh trok, dat enige collega's zich gehaast hebben hem te verzekeren hoezeer hijzelf dat epos nu geschreven had, al was het dan in proza. -

PENELUSURAN SEJARAH PERADABAN JAKARTA Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan 2018 Pemerintah DKI Jakarta Penelusuran Sejarah Peradaban Jakarta Kata Sambutan Menelusuri peradaban kota Jakarta merupakan hal yang penting sekaligus tidak mudah. Dikatakan penting karena penyelusuran peradaban Jakarta dipandang sebagai informasi kesejarahan yang dapat membangun karakter dan identitas kultural masyarakat Jakarta. Dikatakan tidak mudah karena diperlukan suatu penyusunan sejarah yang komprehensif dan memiliki kebaruan tentunya diperlukan pemikiran yang harus memenuhi kaidah-kaidah ilmiah yang dapat dipertang- gungjawabkan. Sehubungan dengan hal tersebut, Dinas Parawisata dan Kebudayaan Provinsi DKI Jakarta berinisiatif mengumpulkan para pakar dan peminat bidang kese- jarahan guna menyelusuri sejarah peradaban Jakarta, yang kemudian akan diterbitkan dalam sebuah buku. Pengumpulan pemikiran ini dilakukan dengan penye- lenggaraan 4 (kali) focus discussion group (FGD) dan 2 (dua) kali seminar. Seminar pertama adalah untuk menjaring materi penulisan, dan seminar kedua untuk mengkritisi hasil penulisan inal. Semua acara tersebut dalam rangka public hearing serta menyerap pendapat dan saran banyak pihak untuk memperkaya materi buku. Bestond van Nederlands-Indië 1819-1848: een dergelijk college ook in Nederlands-Indië? Het antwoord bleek: Ja! Maar mr. Godert Alexander Gerard Philip baron aan welke regelingen was dat onderworpen? Was het onafhankelijk van het 1819-1828 mr. Pieter Simon Maurisse van der Capellen (1778-1848) Indische bestuur? Hoe was de verhouding met het gouvernement? Welk recht (1769-1833) commissaris-generaal 1816-1819 en paste het toe? Welke bevolkingsgroepen vielen onder zijn gezag? Wie waren gouverneur-generaal 1816-1825 de presidenten, wie de rechters? Waar zetelde dat college? 1828-1829 mr. Pieter Merkus (1787-1844) Nederlands-Indië 1819-1848 van Hooggerechtshof Het mr. Cornelis Theodorus Elout (1767-1841) Oud-rechter Kees Briët onderzocht deze vragen met het doel een portret 1831-1837 mr. Georg Cornelis Hageman commissaris-generaal 1816-1819 samen te stellen van het Hooggerechtshof van Nederlands-Indië, de opperste (1790-1855) rechtbank in het Nederlandse koloniale rijk in de Indische archipel. Hij Arnold Adriaan Buijskes (1771-1838) deed dat voor de periode vanaf de oprichting in 1819 tot de invoering van 1837-1845 mr. Christian Jacobus Scholten commissaris-generaal 1816-1819 gecodificeerde wetgeving in Nederlands-Indië in 1848, een periode die in de van Oud Haarlem (1794-1849) rechtsgeschiedenis van de kolonie onderbelicht was gebleven.
