G Roger Knight Born in deeply rural Shropshire (UK), G Roger Knight has been living and teaching in Adelaide since the late 1960s. He gained his PhD from London University's School of Oriental and African Studies, where his mentors included John Bastin and CD Cowan. He is an internationally recognised authority on the sugar industry of colonial Indonesia, with many publications to his name. Among the latest is Commodities and Colonialism: The Story of Big Sugar in Indonesia, 1880-1940, published by Brill in Leiden and Boston in 2013. He is currently working on a 'business biography' — based on scores of his newly discovered letters back home — of Gillian Maclaine, a young Scot who was active as a planter and merchant in colonial Java during the 1820s and 1830s. For a change, it has almost nothing to do with sugar. Between the 1830s and the 1880s, sweetener manufacture in Dutch-controlled Java — the crown jewel of the erstwhile Netherlands Indies — drew decisively away in matters of technology and sugar science from other Asian centres of production which had once equaled or, more often, surpassed it in terms of both output and know-how. Along with its larger and altogether more famous Caribbean counterpart, Java's industry came to occupy a position at the apex of the trade in what had become by this date a key global commodity. Along with the beet sugar producers of (post-1870) Imperial Germany, Cuba and Java accounted for a little over one-third of the world's recorded output of the industrially manufactured kind of sugar usually referred to as 'centrifugal'. 'Industrially manufactured' is the key phrase here, since during the third quarter of the nineteenth century, it was these two island producers that became the prime centres of industrialised manufacture of cane sugar in their respective hemispheres. In neither case has this fact always been grasped. Cuba, along with the United States, was the nineteenth century's greatest holdout of slave-based commodity production, and the institution of slavery there outlasted its American counterpart for the better part of two decades, only coming to a (de facto) end in the 1880s. As a result, the industrial dimension of the Cuban 'project' in sugar has been obscured

  • The Implementation of the Cultuurstelsel in Java: Cases in Afdeeling Demak and Grobogan, Central Java Versus in Afdeeling Pacitan, East Java 1830-1870
The Implementation of the Cultuurstelsel in Java: Cases in Afdeeling Demak and Grobogan, Central Java versus in Afdeeling Pacitan, East Java 1830-1870 Iswahyudi Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, Indonesia Email: [email protected] Abstract: The Dutch colonial government in applying the Cultuurstelsel policy in Java in 1830 used traditional Javanese patterns of power to persuade farmers in certain regions to be willing to work in export plantations and surrender a portion of their land to be planted with governorate crops. Based on the description above, it would be interesting to see further about the implementation of the cultivation system in several afdeeling areas or regencies in Java because in Pacitan, East Java, it is said to have an impact on prosperity and welfare for farmers. On the other hand, in other regions, in Afdeeling Demak and Grobogan, Central Java, the opposite happened, namely that the implementation of the forced cultivation system actually had an impact on misery and poverty among the population. Regardless of whether Cultuurstelsel should be valued positively or negatively, most historians agree that the system had been one of the most important parts of Dutch colonialism in the Dutch East Indies from 1830 to 1870. Some at that time even thought that cultuurstelsel was the best colonial model that can be imagined. Keywords: Cultuurstelsel; Grobogan; Demak; Pacitan; tobacco; coffee I. Introduction The history of the Dutch East Indies economy in the 19th century was marked by a period of time called culturstelsel or forced cultivation or also referred to as the cultivation system.

MAKING MEAD BY BRAD SMITH ead, which is a fermented beverage made from honey, is one of the oldest alcoholic M beverages. Vessels found in China dating back to 7000 B.C. have organic compounds consistent with fermented honey and rice. Mead was the revered “nectar of the gods” in ancient Greece and the “drink of kings” throughout history, though it has faded to obscurity in modern times. For homebrewers, mead is a great addition to complement your other fermented offerings. Many of your guests may have never tasted a good quality mead or melomel (fruit mead), but almost everyone enjoys this sweet beverage. Using some modern methods, mead is also relatively easy and quick to make, and you can use equipment you already have on hand for homebrewing. MODERN MEADMAKING TECHNIQUES When I started homebrewing back in 1987, the fermentation of mead was a very slow process, taking 12 to 18 Photo by Charles A. Parker/Images Plus Parker/Images A. Nor could he know how he had helped to set in motion a major rebellion that would shake the very foundations of the mightiest Empire on earth. General Gage was a military man who had been in North America since the 1750s, and had more experience than any other senior British officer. He had fought in the French and Indian War alongside a young George Washington, with whom he still had a friendly relationship. Wong Global Positioning: Houqua and his China Trade Partners in the Nineteenth Century Abstract This study unearths the lost world of early-nineteenth-century Canton. Known today as Guangzhou, this Chinese city witnessed the economic dynamism of global commerce until the demise of the Canton System in 1842. Records of its commercial vitality and global interactions faded only because we have allowed our image of old Canton to be clouded by China’s weakness beginning in the mid-1800s. By reviving this story of economic vibrancy, I restore the historical contingency at the juncture at which global commercial equilibrium unraveled with the collapse of the Canton system, and reshape our understanding of China’s subsequent economic experience. I explore this story of the China trade that helped shape the modern world through the lens of a single prominent merchant house and its leading figure, Wu Bingjian, known to the West by his trading name of Houqua.

The development of The Great Post Road by the government of Hindia Belanda General Governor, Herman Willem Daendels in 1800s become the pioneer of today Pantura’s corridor. Concomitant with the increasing volume of vehicles passing through Pantura, the saturation degree of the corridor is at its limit. Furthermore, inadequate drainage infrastructure alongside Pantura is also one of the factors that worsen road deterioration. Land use around Pantura’s perimeters is densely with industrials complexes and highly populated that makes it difficult for road development and expansion. There are several alternative solutions to reduce the saturation degree of Pantura Java, such as distributing the movement of goods and services into other transportation modes, intersection improvement, law enforcement for over load heavy vehicles, and construct/develop alternative routes. Directorate General of Highways aims to accelerate the construction of Trans Java National Toll Road, expanding and improving other National Corridor Road, such as Central Corridor Road, South Corridor Road, Trans South-South Java and developing ring road in the centers of regional activity in Java.
