“I Am Afraid Americans Cannot Understand” The Congress for Cultural Freedom in France and Italy, 1950–1957 ✣ Andrea Scionti Culture was a crucial yet elusive battlefield of the Cold War. Both superpowers tried to promote their way of life and values to the world but had to do so care- fully. The means adopted by the United States included not only propaganda and the use of mass media such as cinema and television but also efforts to help shape the world of highbrow culture and the arts. The Congress for Cultural Freedom (CCF), an organization sponsored by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), offered U.S. policymakers and intellectuals the opportunity to provide indirect support for anti-Communist intellectuals without being openly associated with their activities. Although the CCF represented one of the main instruments for the United States to try to win the hearts and minds of postwar Europe, it also created new challenges for U.S. Cold War- riors. By tying themselves to the European intelligentsia, they were forced to mediate between different societies, cultures, and intellectual traditions. This article looks at the contexts of France and Italy to highlight this interplay of competing notions of anti-Communism and cultural freedom and how the local actors involved helped redefine the character and limits of U.S. cultural diplomacy. Although scholars have looked at the CCF and its significance, es- pecially in the Anglo-Saxon world, a focus on French and Italian intellectuals can offer fresh insights into this subject. The Congress for Cultural Freedom was the product of a convergence of interests between the CIA’s recently established Office of Policy Coordination (OPC) and a small number of American and European intellectuals, many of them former Communists, concerned about the perceived success of the Soviet cultural offensive in Western Europe. -

Narrative and Nothing: The Enterprise of Italian American Writing Robert Viscusi Early in 1990,1 at a reception for a group of Italian American educators, I overheard a high-school principal boasting to a jour nalist, "We are the heirs of the Renaissance." "No," I thought, "we are the orphans of the Renaissance." I kept this wisecrack to myself, but the actual question it implied has continued to trouble me: what can we say about the relationship of Italian Americans to the glorious Italian past? Seeking an ans~er, I looked where a literary historian would look-in that art which a people uses to connect its present to its past: the art of narrative. l. religions Article Redeeming the Age in Which We Live: Ignazio Silone’s The Story of a Humble Christian Kimberly Rae Connor School of Management, University of San Francisco, 2130 Fulton Street, San Francisco, CA 94117, USA; [email protected] Received: 15 July 2019; Accepted: 20 August 2019; Published: 22 August 2019 Abstract: This essay explores Ignazio Silone’s seldom considered book, “The Story of a Humble Christian.” Part memoir, history, and theatre, this book tells the story of Pope Celestine V, the first, and until Benedict XVI, the only pope to resign. The book lends itself to an interpretation that applies a consideration of Silone’s recently revealed and complicated biography with a reflection on the current occupant of the papacy, Pope Francis, as a way to articulate how flawed humans can experience transcendent and transformative possibilities when they lead with humility. Although needing to rewrite implies failure, in Silone’s formulation, the failure, while his, is not his alone. Failing to fit a humble Christian in to the machinery of the world is characteristic of human organizations built by flawed individuals. -

It is a veritable rite—literally, a rite of passage—which is carried out collectively. Its meanings and purposes are very different to those of the introspective or contemplative solitary walk. Instead, it regularly involves hundreds or thousands of participants spurred on by the desires and pleasures of open-air leisure; socialisation; looking at others and being looked at in turn; exercising a status, economic class, and/or gender and age-class prerogatives. -

Jonathan Maier Uffenheimer from Innsbruck was a wealthy merchant and gave her a chance to begin a new life. At least one child died young. Their son Abraham married 15 year old Sara Brettauer from Hohenems and moved to Venice. -
