RAFFA, The University of Texas at Austin The approach of the seven-hundredth anniversary of Dante’s death is a propi- tious time to recall the events that drove him from his native Florence and marked his life in various Italian cities before he found his final refuge in Ra- venna, where he died and was buried in 1321. Drawing on early chronicles and biographies, modern historical research and biographical criticism, and the poet’s own writings, I construct this narrative of “Dante’s Political Life” for the milestone commemoration of his death. The poet’s politically-motivated exile, this biographical essay shows, was destined to become one of the world’s most fortunate misfortunes. Keywords: Dante, Exile, Florence, Biography The proliferation of biographical and historical scholarship on Dante in recent years, after a relative paucity of such work through much of the twentieth century, prompted a welcome cluster of re- flections on this critical genre in a recent volume of Dante Studies. -

ABSTRACT Community, Place, and Cultural Battles: Associational Life in Central Italy, 1945-1968 Laura J. Hornbake This dissertation is an exploration of associational life in central Italy, an examination of organizations that were central to the everyday experience of tens of thousands of Italians at a time when social, economic and geographical transformations were upending their everyday lives, 1945-1968. This dissertation examines facets of these transformations: the changing shape of cities, increasing mobility of people, technological changes that made possible new media and new cultural forms, from the perspective of local associations. The many lively groups, the cultural circles and case del popolo of central Italy were critical sites where members encountered new ideas, navigated social change, and experimented with alternative cultures. At the same time, these organizations themselves were being transformed from unitary centers that expressed the broad solidarity of the anti-fascist Resistance to loose federations of fragmentary single-interest groups. “I Am Afraid Americans Cannot Understand” The Congress for Cultural Freedom in France and Italy, 1950–1957 ✣ Andrea Scionti Culture was a crucial yet elusive battlefield of the Cold War. Both superpowers tried to promote their way of life and values to the world but had to do so care- fully. The means adopted by the United States included not only propaganda and the use of mass media such as cinema and television but also efforts to help shape the world of highbrow culture and the arts. The Congress for Cultural Freedom (CCF), an organization sponsored by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), offered U.S. policymakers and intellectuals the opportunity to provide indirect support for anti-Communist intellectuals without being openly associated with their activities. Although the CCF represented one of the main instruments for the United States to try to win the hearts and minds of postwar Europe, it also created new challenges for U.S. Cold War- riors. By tying themselves to the European intelligentsia, they were forced to mediate between different societies, cultures, and intellectual traditions. This article looks at the contexts of France and Italy to highlight this interplay of competing notions of anti-Communism and cultural freedom and how the local actors involved helped redefine the character and limits of U.S. cultural diplomacy. Although scholars have looked at the CCF and its significance, es- pecially in the Anglo-Saxon world, a focus on French and Italian intellectuals can offer fresh insights into this subject. The Congress for Cultural Freedom was the product of a convergence of interests between the CIA’s recently established Office of Policy Coordination (OPC) and a small number of American and European intellectuals, many of them former Communists, concerned about the perceived success of the Soviet cultural offensive in Western Europe. -

It’s all written here,’ she said, pulling an already filled out ballot from her pocket, for all the world like a precious talisman. Alas, the old woman was illiterate, and someone had foisted a monarchical ballot upon her. When I explained the trick, she looked at me sorrowfully, and said: ‘Is that why they didn’t teach us to read?’” – Carlo Levi, “Italy Fights the Battle of Illiteracy” (1949)1 “No one has come to this land except as an enemy, a conqueror, or a visitor devoid of understanding.” – Carlo Levi, Christ Stopped at Eboli (1947)2 In the early spring of 1950, Chim, a photographer who had just moved from Paris to Rome, traveled to Southern Italy on a UNESCO assignment to document illiteracy and the new schools where peasants, elderly and children alike, were taught to read and write by local volunteers. Born Dawid Szymin, Chim was the son of a Pol- ish-Jewish publisher. A chess player, an intellectual, and an avid reader, he was especially suited to this mission: books and knowledge had always been central to his life. We don’t know whether Carlo Levi, who had moved to Rome in 1945 and kept a home and studio there, accompanied him on that trip. But for both, the Mez- zogiorno would prove to be a transformative experience. At the time illiteracy was a problem that affected as many as 35 percent of Italy’s rural population. -

Nous nous apercevrons alors de tout ce qui nous lie" (Paul Eluard) Una de las cuestiones nada ociosas del Cristo si e fermata a Eboli es a qué género se adscribe. Aunque por nuestra parte no haya ánimo de entrar aquí en polémica1, digamos de entrada que este casi ensayo (ensayo narrativo, de otro modo), al suponérsele un acercamiento casi científico a la realidad que describe, ilustra, nos parece, mejor que las novelas del período neorrealista, cuán difícil le resulta al creador ceñirse a esas dos grandes coordenadas teóricas del movimiento: la oralidad y el compromiso2. Pocas obras literarias de los años '40 tuvieron la resonancia de la del pintor y escritor turinés C. Levi. Aunque su labor cuajó en un primer ensayo Paura della liberta y en el posterior L'orologio, y en variados libros de viaje, ha sido considerado como autor de una sola obra3, a la que ceñiremos nuestra atención en el presente artículo. El sugestivo título lo obtuvo Levi del particular modo de expresarse de los campesinos lucanos, como expresamente se señala en las primeras páginas: "Noi non siamo cristiani" essi dicono "Cristo si e fermato a Eboli" ... Cristo si e davvero fermato ad Eboli, dove la strada e il treno abbandonano la costa e si addentrano nelle desolate terre della Lucania.
