In the 20th century alone events such as the Revolution of 1910, La Guerra Cristera, La Guerra Sucia, and most recently Los Feminicidios and Calderón’s War on Drugs are representative of an ethos of violence withstood and inflicted by Mexicans towards women, men, youth, and marginalized groups. This dissertation examines Los Feminicidios in Ciudad Juarez and the cultural production surrounding them: chronicles, novels, documentaries and films. In it I draw on Aristotle’s influential Nicomachean Ethics, Victoria Camps’ El gobierno de las emociones (2011), María Pía Lara’s Narrating Evil (2007), Vittorio Gallese’s and other scientists’ research on neuroscience empathy and neurohumanism, and socio-political essays in order to theorize how a pathos-infused understanding of ethos might engage a reading and viewing public in what has become a discourse about violence determined by a sense of fatalism. Specifically, I argue that literary and film narratives and their interpretations play a significant role in people’s emotional engagement and subsequent cognitive processes. I stress the importance of creating an approach that considers both vii pathos and logos as a way of understanding the ethos of violence. Eiko Kadono lost her mother when she was fve. Be- fore long the Pacifc War started, so she had to be evacuated to the northern side of Japan at 10 years old. The experience of war as a child is at the root of Kadono’s deep commitment to peace and hapiness. She studied American literature at Waseda University, after graduation she worked at a publisher. After marriage she accompanied her hasband to Brazil and lived in San Paulo for two years. On the long voyage to and from Brazil, she was able to broaden her knowledge about the varied countries. These experiences brought up her curious and multicultural attitude toward creative activity. Her frst book was published in 1970, since then she pub- lished about 250 books, and these were translated into 10 languages. Kadono says “to start reading a book is like opening a door to a different world. It doesn’t close at the end of the story, another door is always wait- ing there to be opened. People will start to look at the world in a different way after reading a story, and it’s the beginning in a sense. And I think that is the true pleasure of reading.

    ‘Victims of the Same Destiny’: Italy in the Postcolonial, the Postcolonial in Italy Thomas James Langley Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of English Literature, Language, and Linguistics Newcastle University September 2015 ii Abstract This thesis concentrates on a series of canonical Italian anti-Fascist writers, and argues that their work is informed and underpinned by an engagement with colonialism. Working between Italian and English, the thesis establishes an original framework for comparative reading, in which it traces neglected lines of literary influence and networks of intellectual and political dialogue between Italian and Indian writers in the inter-war and post-war periods. The first chapter explores the contours of the ‘anti-colonial imagination’ underpinning the work of Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci. Focusing particularly on his lesser-known and often un-translated pre-prison writings, it suggests that the critical terminology for which he has become best known in postcolonial studies emerges as part of his gradual elaboration of an anti-colonial position. The second chapter looks at the ways in which Ignazio Silone’s novel Fontamara represents Fascism as a form of internal colonialism, before moving on to think about the significance of its influence on Raja Rao’s Kanthapura and what the implications of this line of influence might be for our understanding of what defines postcolonial writing. The third chapter turns to the work of Carlo Levi, and argues that his lifelong commitment to exposing the internal colonization of the Italian South forms part of a broader anti-colonial commitment that carries him to India and brings him into dialogue with writers like Mulk Raj Anand.

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract KinoCuban: The Significance of Soviet and East European Cinemas for the Cuban Moving Image examines a piece of evidence that has been misunderstood in the existing body of Cuban film studies. The first revolutionary legislation concerning the arts was the creation of the ICAIC in 1959, a fact that demonstrates the importance of cinema for the new cultural project. This thesis argues that the moving image was radically affected by the proclamation of the socialist character of the Revolution on 16 April 1961. What was it that the distant audiovisual culture, film theories and practices of the Soviet-bloc offered Cubans? Is it not the case that Soviet-bloc cinemas had an influence upon the shaping of the Cuban moving image, if one takes into consideration the very few films co-produced in 30 years? It should be stressed that during this period, the moving image was the direct or indirect effect of the different waves that arrived in Cuba from ‘the other’ Europe, which were born at the same time as the first films that were co-produced in the 1960s, particularly from the unique experience of Mikhail Kalatozov’s masterpiece Soy Cuba. The present study reveals that the most important outcome from that influence was the conceptualisation of the cinematic discourse of the Revolution, so well represented in ICAIC and its socialist films of commitment.

The subject of the report was general prior knowledge of bishops and popes of sexual abuse of children minors by Catholic clergy. Shortly after this report had been circulated among some attorneys I was asked to prepare variations on it. This entailed expanding the table of resources. My original motivation for the bibliography was for strictly private use: I had been collecting articles, scholarly and otherwise, since the emergence of the sexual abuse issue in 1984. I also began buying books about clergy sexual abuse once they started coming out. The very first book that I discovered was Clergy Malpractice, written by the late Robert McMenamin and published in 1988. Robert had been a Church attorney who switched and began representing victims. The bibliography began to grow as I purchased every book I could find related to clergy sexual abuse. I added every scholarly article I could find as well. At some point I decided to add new sections for works published in areas that were either directly or indirectly related to the issue. As I added more books I decided to divide the bibliography into sections. I do not recall exactly when I started developing a mailing list but I believe it was sometime in 2005. By then Dick Sipe, Pat Wall and I were putting the finishing touches on Sex, Priests and Secret Codes which also began as an expanded report on prior notice that reached back to the fourth century.
