The essays and syllabi explore service learning, teaching and learning styles, case study methodology, transcultural immersion, and representative assignments, texts, and references. Three of the essays address effective attraction and retention programs aimed at traditionally underrepresented populations. John Dewey 8 INTRODUCTION Many college and university professors, whether in two- or four-year institutions, are hearing and reading about the need to examine their courses, and, indeed, their entire curricula, in light of the multicultural challenges of the 21st century. We have become familiar withthephrases"inclusivecurriculum,""curriculumreform,"and "curriculum transformation." A significant number of faculty have begun the process of creatingcourses that represent more fully and more equitably the multiple perspectives and contributions of diverse national and international populations. In doing so we have become more conscious of the many phases and levels at which we can engage this process. James A. Banks (1988) has identified

    Syllabus – Photo Journalism, Films and Animation Photo Journalism: Photojournalism is a particular form of journalism (the collecting, editing, and presenting of news material for publication or broadcast) that employs images in order to tell a news story. It is now usually understood to refer only to still images, but in some cases the term also refers to video used in broadcast journalism. Photojournalism is distinguished from other close branches of photography (e.g., documentary photography, social documentary photography, street photography or celebrity photography) by complying with a rigid ethical framework which demands that the work be both honest and impartial whilst telling the story in strictly journalistic terms. Photojournalists create pictures that contribute to the news media, and help communities connect with one other. Photojournalists must be well informed and knowledgeable about events happening right outside their door. They deliver news in a creative format that is not only informative, but also entertaining. Need and importance, Timeliness The images have meaning in the context of a recently published record of events. Objectivity The situation implied by the images is a fair and accurate representation of the events they depict in both content and tone. Narrative The images combine with other news elements to make facts relatable to audiences. Like a writer, a photojournalist is a reporter, but he or she must often make decisions instantly and carry photographic equipment, often while exposed to significant obstacles (e.g., physical danger, weather, crowds, physical access). subject of photo picture sources, Photojournalists are able to enjoy a working environment that gets them out from behind a desk and into the world.

    IN DEEP WATER: THE OCEANIC IN THE BRITISH IMAGINARY, 1666-1805 A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Colin Dewey May 2011 © 2011 Colin Dewey IN DEEP WATER: THE OCEANIC IN THE BRITISH IMAGINARY, 1666-1805 Colin Dewey, Ph. D. Cornell University 2011 This study argues that the ocean has determined the constitution of British identity – both the collective identity of an imperial nation and the private identity of individual imagination. Romantic-era literary works, maritime and seascape paintings, engravings and popular texts reveal a problematic national and individual engagement with the sea. Historians have long understood the importance of the sea to the development of the British empire, yet literary critics have been slow to take up the study of oceanic discourse, especially in relation to the Romantic period. Scholars have historicized “Nature” in literature and visual art as the product of an aesthetic ideology of landscape and terrestrial phenomena; my intervention is to consider ocean-space and the sea voyage as topoi that actively disrupt a corresponding aesthetic of the sea, rendering instead an ideologically unstable oceanic imaginary. More than the “other” or opposite of land, in this reading the sea becomes an antagonist of Nature. When Romantic poets looked to the ocean, the tracks of countless voyages had already inscribed an historic national space of commerce, power and violence. However necessary, the threat presented by a population of seafarers whose loyalty was historically ambiguous mapped onto both the material and moral landscape of Britain.

Nietzsche Much attention has been paid to the history and theory of European and American cinema as it has evolved over the last century, but there is comparatively little scholarship of films from the Middle East, an area that has been long misunderstood by the Western world. However, in recent years, the blossoming film industry of Iran and its many awards have begun to awaken the world to a brilliant new film tradition. Since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, a new generation of filmmakers has emerged, and through a variety of subjects, they provide an authentic perspective of modern Iranian culture. The post- Revolutionary film tradition of Iran has gained respect and admiration globally for its subtle exploration of social issues while avoiding superficiality. International film festivals have awarded Iranian films in recent years for their simple, yet profound messages. In the 20th and 21st century, this relatively new medium of film has become the most accessible art form to populations around the world, and it has become the most vivid way to experience another country’s culture. The history of film in Iran since the Revolution is that of an evolving relationship—both the filmmaker’s and the Revolutionary generation’s relationship to the government. Understanding the relationship between film and politics is the first step in understanding the films themselves.

The majority of these studies have focused on the interaction between a local language and a non-local language. In this project, I propose an analysis of the mixture of two world languages (Spanish and English), which can be categorised as both local and non-local. I do this through the analysis of the enormously successful reggaeton genre, which is characterised by its use of Spanglish. I used two data types to inform my research: a corpus of code-switching instances in top 20 reggaeton songs, and a questionnaire on attitudes towards Spanglish in general and in music. I collected 200 answers to the questionnaire – half from American English-speakers, and the other half from Spanish-speaking Hispanics of various nationalities.
