the•BONA•dish A Dining Guide: St. Bonaventure, NY “Tell me what you eat, And I will tell you what you are.” -Brillat-Savarin A Note from the Editor... From the deep-dish pizza of Chicago, Illinois, to a Cuban sandwich from Miami Florida, there isn’t any doubt that these cities’ culinary reputations help to define them and emphasize their best qualities. St. Bonaventure, New York and the surrounding communi- ty aren’t any different. Through this local restaurant survey publication, the•BONA•dish, students will be able to get a feel for the area’s best and worst dining. From our own mystery meat at the Hickey Dining Hall to chicken wings & torpedoes at Randy’s Up the River and steak at the Century Manor; students at St. Bonaventure University will finally have a guide to all the different places to eat, drink and be merry. This scaled consumer based resource includes top menu items in addition to reviews and rankings based on quality of food, service and atmosphere. It’s all based on a 30-point scale and designed to help the perplexed diner decide where to eat. The Old Library qualifies as Olean’s version of fine dining and caters parties onsite and off. It’s a little farther from school and considered pricier, but students opt to enjoy the “upscale environment” during the Old Library’s 5-7pm happy hour on Thursday and Friday nights when they offer a complimentary appetizer buffet. This place generally caters to an older cliental. Famous for the “beef bar” and large steak choices, it’s a little expensive for a college stu- dent. The service is good and many students apprec iate the traditional 4-course meal setup of the menu, from appetizer to dessert. Many students commented that they’ve only visited the Beef N’ Barrel once and wouldn’t go back if they had other options. In addition, their famous, “mix & match,” selecting the seafood you want a la carte, is a big hit. It’s the farthest restaurant from campus in the review and students agree the 10-minute drive is quite the hike compared to the other area eateries, but the steak and seafood variety is worth it. Students also enjoy going to the Century Manor for weeknight “happy hour”specials. This buffet has a lot to offer, but most students agree it’s repetitive. It has a reputation for greasy food, but thankfully about four years ago, the Hickey underwent a re-vamp and no longer has a greasy atmosphere. The facilities are clean and new, unlike many other college dining halls. In addition to it’s cleanliness, the staff is always friendly and more than willing to help students with their questions and concerns.
