A Dining Guide: St. Bonaventure, NY
“Tell me what you eat,
And I will tell you what you are.” -Brillat-Savarin
A Note from the Editor...
From the deep-dish pizza of Chicago, Illinois, to a Cuban sandwich from Miami Florida, there isn’t any doubt that these cities’ culinary reputations help to define them and emphasize their best qualities.
St. Bonaventure, New York and the surrounding communi- ty aren’t any different. Through this local restaurant survey publication, the•BONA•dish, students will be able to get a feel for the area’s best and worst dining. From our own mystery meat at the Hickey Dining Hall to chicken wings & torpedoes at Randy’s Up the River and steak at the Century Manor; students at St. Bonaventure University will finally have a guide to all the different places to eat, drink and be merry. This scaled consumer based resource includes top menu items in addition to reviews and rankings based on quality of food, service and atmosphere. It’s all based on a 30-point scale and designed to help the perplexed diner decide where to eat.
Bon Appetite, Christine Perez- O’Rourke

St. Bonaventure students frequent The Old Library for Junior Prom, 50 Days celebration, and when their parents come to town. The Old Library qualifies as Olean’s version of fine dining and caters parties onsite and off. It’s a little farther from school and considered pricier, but students opt to enjoy the “upscale environment” during the Old Library’s 5-7pm happy hour on Thursday and Friday nights when they offer a complimentary appetizer buffet. Aplace to take parents, the Beef N’ Barrel is in downtown Olean. This place generally caters to an older cliental. Famous for the “beef bar” and large steak choices, it’s a little expensive for a college stu- dent. The service is good and many students apprec iate the traditional 4-course meal setup of the menu, from appetizer to dessert. Many students commented that they’ve only visited the Beef N’ Barrel once and wouldn’t go back if they had other options. Menu Items:

Said to have “the best steak a person can get in Western New York.” Also considered one of Olean’s nicer restaurants, students agree that the Century Manor’s grill house food is delicious. In addition, their famous, “mix & match,” selecting the seafood you want a la carte, is a big hit. It’s the farthest restaurant from campus in the review and students agree the 10-minute drive is quite the hike compared to the other area eateries, but the steak and seafood variety is worth it. Students also enjoy going to the Century Manor for weeknight “happy hour”specials. Menu Items:

“Yes it is as bad a you would think.” Our very own campus dining hall received mixed reviews. This buffet has a lot to offer, but most students agree it’s repetitive. It has a reputation for greasy food, but thankfully about four years ago, the Hickey underwent a re-vamp and no longer has a greasy atmosphere. The facilities are clean and new, unlike many other college dining halls. In addition to it’s cleanliness, the staff is always friendly and more than willing to help students with their questions and concerns. Another downfall to the Hickey is lunch-time. Between 12-1:30 PM on the weekdays it’s like feeding time at the zoo, and in fact people-watching is the Hickey’s main attraction along with the chicken patty. This Hickey staple is the number one student favorite, described by many as, “greasy, fake, processed chicken goodness on a bun that can sit in your stomach all day.“ Menu Items:

Seen as a “gourmet option” to students, Cafe La Verna is a fairly new addition to the Bonaventure campus. Although its’ deli side isn’t open on the weekends, which is the main student complaint, La Verna caters to a different crowd than the adjacent Hickey. Patrons are able to choose from a variety of ready-made and made-to-order sandwiches and salads. Bona bucks don’t go as far here, as it is seen as the most expensive on-campus dining choice. Students enjoy the “soothing jazz tunes always on shuffle.” La Verna’s deli and Starbucks coffee counter add to the relaxed atmosphere of the cafe. It’s a place to meet friends, and is an attractive study alternative from the hectic atmosphere of the campus library across the way. A friendly staff and blazing fireplace in the winter months make Cafe La Verna a one-of-a-kind eatery at St. Bonaventure. Menu Items:

Reilly Center Café, generally referred to as the RC is frequented by over 60% of Bonaventure students weekly. Offering many of the same options as other campus establishments, it’s seen as more convenient and having better choices than other locations. Located in the main student center, there is always something going on. From club t-shirt sales to fundraisers, the RC is always buzzing with student traffic during the day. Though most of the menu items are “off the grill and greasy,” students tend to line up for the made-to-order wrap station, which is seen as healthier. Though the line can get very long at times, students agree it’s worth the wait. Various snacks and dorm essentials are also sold here, whether it’s a gallon of milk, cup-o-noodles or mac-n-cheese. “I forgot it’s there,” is a common response among students when asked about this café located in St. Francis Hall. Viewed by students as “out of the way” for those living on the West side of campus, frequent Francis diners seem to live in the residence hall above it and townhouses located just a few yards away. Considered “the next best thing,” for many upperclassmen on the East side of campus, Francis Cafe doesn’t serve “anything special” but is the only eating alternative to going to the other side of campus. It has a reputation for inconvenient hours, but a big positive to this campus choice is the meal exchange program. Francis offers meal exchange ; hickey swipes can be used. Menu Items:

Randy says, “Fast food isn’t good and good food isn’t fast”. A slogan featured on placemats at Randy’s Up the River that has become an excepted fact. Famous for their steak diners, jumbo wings, half-pound burgers, and a good long wait for your food. Many students take this time to enjoy a torpedo, a 15-cup beer container, which somehow makes the wait go faster. On the outskirts of the Village, this restaurant is easily missed, unless you’ve been there before. One visit is all it takes to get hooked. Many students like going to Sheila’s Two Boot & Scoops Cafe, formally known as Spring Break Cafe for their “amazing and cheap breakfast.” The Cafe is very small, with a sit down counter that is reminiscent of a diner. Sitting almost in the kitchen, the aroma of greasy, comfort food fi lls the place. The best part is the price.
