Department of Biological Sciences, Sokoto State University, P.M.B 2134, Sokoto State-Nigeria Correspondence email: [email protected] _____________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT A survey of mycoflora associated with garlic cloves (Allium sativum L.) was conducted in five different markets site in Sokoto metropolis, Sokoto State. A total of 135 garlic (cloves) were collected, isolated and identified based on their morphological and cultural characteristics. Result shows that out of these 135 samp1es, six different types of fungal species were isolated and identified. These fungal species includes: Aspergillus niger, Absidia crymbefera, Mucor racemoses, Rhizopus stolonifer, A. flavus, and A. terrus. Among these fungal species, Aspergillus niger was found to have higher frequency of occurrence with 20(24.7%), Absidia crymberfera followed with 18 (22.2%), followed by Mucor racemoses having a frequency of 15 (18.5%), then Rhizopus stolon with 12 (14.8%) which is also followed by A. flavus and A. terrus having appearance of 9(11.1%) and 7(8.6%) respectively. Further research work should be carried out to be able to determine whether these fungi can be transmitted to seedling on the field. Email: [email protected] Received: 06 February 2015, Revised and Accepted: 04 March 2015 ABSTRACT Garlic, a very common condiment found in our kitchens has immense therapeutic potential. It has been used since ages in different civilizations and eras for therapy in diverse conditions. However, somewhere down the lane, its health benefits were forgotten with very few researchers doing studies on it and demonstrating its benefits in various disorders of the cardiovascular, respiratory, central, and peripheral nervous systems including dermatological and reproductive disorders. However, with a boom in the Nutraceutical industry in the past few decades, renewed interest has been generated in this age-old remedy with it becoming a very popular health supplement. This review focuses on the health benefits of this wonder food. It also emphasizes the need to find the right therapeutic dose at which it can be therapeutically beneficial and paves the way for future research. The oils were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and their chemical composition was identified. The major constituents of A. atroviolaceum leaves oil were dimethyl trisulfide (59.0%), ethyl linolenate (12.4%), phytol (11.4%) and in bulb oil were methyl methyl thiomethyl disulfide (61.3%), dimethyl trisulfide (15.1%) and methyl allyl disulfide (4.3%). The major constituents of both essential oils are sulfur compounds. Conclusion: The results of the present study can help to increase of our information about composition of an edible herb in Iran. -

Both grape and vine (V. vinifera) leaves in vineyard are intensely produced and consumed in Turkey. Brined grape vine leaves, dolma is a well-liked Turkish dish, common to Mediterranean diets. The vine leaf contains an abundant amount of vitamins, dietary fiber and minerals. Vine leaves can be used as both in fresh and stored forms. Young leaves are choosen for stuffed dish. Narince, Sultani Cekirdeksiz, Yapincak and Emir grape cultivars are more suitable for this purpose.
