EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: PR In August, which tends to be a lighter month for placing coverage, seven pieces of coverage were generated across the UK, Canada and German markets through proactive pitching and media liaison. Although a lower number of pieces than last month, the quality of the coverage was strong, providing DPR with a huge reach this month. Key UK titles included top national newspapers Metro online, The Express online and Daily Star online, as well as number one travel magazine Conde Nast Traveller. A key activity highlight this month was drafting and distributing a press release on El Yunque, to raise awareness that it’s the only national rainforest in the US. Hills Balfour also communicated with Chris Leadbeater, regarding his Puerto Rico piece for the Telegraph and discussed a potential trip with top freelance journalist Jonathan Thompson who is based in the US but writes for a range of global titles.

Sales & Marketing During the month of August, Hills Balfour worked closely with DPR to launch the inaugural International Educational Series – launching the first webinar on 19 August – which provided the international trade with an update on travel protocols, as well as giving a general overview of all that the island has to offer to international travelers. Following the launch of the Educational Series, Hills Balfour created a newsletter promoting the webinars and the topics that will be covered in the coming months. The newsletter also provided links to the Sales Tool Kit, allowing key members of the trade access to helpful tools for developing product. Regular liaisons with key contacts in the trade continued throughout the month of August, including important product development conversations, route discussions and general webinar recruitment. Conversations with Virgin Atlantic developed, with Amanda and Niamh holding a call with DPR to discuss next steps.

UPDATES TO MEDIA

Hills Balfour continued to keep in regular contact with the media throughout the month of August, to keep abreast of features they can planning that we could submit DPR ideas for and proactively pitching tailored story angles on DPR. Weekly updates were shared in the form of the COVID-19 Activity Report.

Changes to the media landscape: ● Across markets, pagination is increasing and advertising is slowly picking back up. Strong freelancers are also beginning to see an increase in commissions again and ensuring their trips result in at least three to four pieces. With travel desks slowly returning to offices and often with slimmed down teams, freelancers are proving to be a valuable resource in ensuring editors get first peek into post-COVID-19 travel and new hotel openings across the globe. ● In terms of content, editors are combining inspirational content with travel news while publications will be focusing forward features on making the most out of the remaining days of annual leave people have accrued. ● There are a substantial number of travel sections that continue to feature opinion pieces or consumer Q&As on issues surrounding the quarantine restrictions, or the impacts covid-19 is having on individual destinations. ● In the UK, The Independent Online's travel section has started up again after a hiatus and will be focused only on places where you can visit now whilst The i's main focus is to guide travellers as responsibly as possibly on the safest ways to enjoy travel, especially where government advice has been confused. ● In the European markets, the content in travel sections is predominantly focused on domestic travel and European travel, bookings are generally being encouraged for Autumn 2020. There’s also a strong focus on 'dream destinations' and presenting travel stories through an alternative lens, including food and drink, cycling and quirky accommodation. ● Radio is growing in the UK with The Times national newspaper launching a new station, Times Radio. ● Print readership is on the decline in Canada, but is on the rise for the first time in years in Germany. ● Spain is seeing an increase in online media consumption (and a resulting decline in print readership). ● The sentiment towards cruise travel is positive, with a lot of news features noting the reopening of cruise lines over the next year, or the launch of new ships. ● The print issue of Country & Townhouse in the UK is now bi-monthly but they're really ramping up online content and have started a webinar/podcast series. The podcast has an average of 200,000 downloads a week. ● On the trade side, in the UK when TTG's print edition returns in September it will be published monthly rather than weekly.

Travel in the age of Covid ● During the age of Covid, the role of the travel media is to both inform AND inspire

7 Rep Report – 2019.20

● Many publications are thinking about how they can cover destinations outside of current safe lists/whose borders are currently closed and exploring how they cover Inspirational travel ● In the UK it has never been busier on the Telegraph travel news desk due to the introduction of the live travel blog. The live blog is often found on the top of the Telegraph homepage as the appetite is so huge ● There is also a proposal to close Sunday Times Travel Magazine, they are still in consultation period. It may mean that the November issue is the last. If STTM does continue they are looking for timeless content which can be read six- to 18-months after the publication date
