THE FIFTY-FOURTH ANNUAL JUNIOR STATESMEN SUMMER SCHOOL

GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY SPEAKERS PROGRAM

Founded in 1934, Junior Statesmen is national, non-partisan educational program dedicated to helping young people develop the skills and knowledge necessary for effective civic leadership. Since its inception, Junior Statesmen has educated over 300,000 high school students in the American system of democratic government.

The Junior Statesmen Foundation conducts Summer School programs at four of our nation's most prestigious institutions of higher education - Yale University, Stanford University, Georgetown University, and the University of Texas at Austin. In Washington, D.C., the organization is best known for the Junior Statesmen Summer School which is held annually at Georgetown University. National politics is the focus of this three week program. Recent Georgetown Summer School speakers have included members of the Cabinet and Senior White House officials, ranking members of the House and Senate, and leading members of the national press corps, as well as key members of the Washington diplomatic community.

Summer School admission is highly competitive. It is based on an applicant's record of academic achievement, demonstrated leadership ability, and involvement in school and community affairs. Two hundred and fifty students are selected each year to attend.

Symposia on politics and government are conducted each summer in Southern and Northern California and in the states of Washington and Idaho. The California symposia examine the politics of local government, while the Washington and Idaho programs concentrate on state government and politics. The symposia include academic instruction as well as extensive speakers programs.

Each year, Junior State chapters participate in several regional and state conventions which feature student debates and offer participants the opportunity to meet and to question political leaders from both parties. These activities give students the chance to ga in an understanding of the complexity of public issues, to sharpen their persuasive and analytic skills, and to develop a respect for the opinions of others. The program is run essentially by high school students themselves. Junior State officers elected on the chapter, regional, state and national levels gain practical experience in the art of self-government. By facing the challenge of running their own program, students have the opportunity to make their own decisions and to see the consequences of those decisions. The Junior Statesmen concept is that democracy must be experienced to be fully understood and appreciated.
