Farewell with the supervisor and the staff of Museum Penerangan and also turn over a vandel from UNS to Museum Penerangan and vice versa. 3.3 Main Activities 3.3.1 Translation Sector The main activity that I did in the internship program was in the Translation Sector. The translation tasks were about museum label and website of Museum Penerangan. I used Google to find a parallel text and translate difficult word about history. I also used some online dictionaries such as Oxford, Collins dictionary, and I used Kateglo, the online glossary to find specific abbreviation, term, and phrases meaning that related to the history site. In the Translation Sector, all translation tasks are carried out by applying the steps of the translation process as shown in this diagram, according Nababan (2008:25) about the steps of translating. Table 2. Translation process diagram Analysis – Transferring (Mental Process/ Cognitive Process/ Black Box) – Restructuring Translation processes consist of three steps, including analyzing, transferring and restructuring. This is so because a translation product needs to be accurate, acceptable and readable. Based on Mangatur Nababan, dkk (2012) accuracy means the basic process to transfer a message from Source Text (ST) to Target Text (TT). The TT is compared to the ST in order to see how the TT is an accurate, correct, precise, faithful, or true reproduction of the ST by assessing the quality of the translation. commit to user 9 library.uns.ac.id digilib.uns.ac.id 3.3.2 Translation Strategies To transfer the message from the source language into the target language, I used translation technique by Molina and Albir (2002), which can be classified into 18 techniques. Those techniques and methods helped me to translate and transfer the message accurately and readable for the audience. 1. Adaptation Adaptation replaces the cultural elements of a type in the SL with cultural elements that exist within the TL. This technique can be used if the element or elements of those cultures have equivalents in the TL. 2. Amplification (Addition) Addition adds information that basically does not exist in the source sentence. The presence of additional information in the target sentence is intended to further clarify the concept conveyed the original authors to the readers. This technique is only the information that is used to assist in delivering the message to the readers. These additions may not modify messages in the source language. 3. Borrowing Borrowing uses words or phrases when translates the source language into the target language. Borrowing can be a pure borrowing, borrowing without making any changes, for example, the word "setting", or in the form of a natural borrowing (naturalized borrowing), where the words of the SL were matched with the spelling of the TL. 4. Calque Calque technique is a literal translation of a word or phrase in translating the source language into the target language. 5. Compensation Compensation replaces the item information or position effects in the SL in other parts of the TL because it cannot be realized in the same section in the SL. 6. Description Description replaces the term in the source language with the description in the target language. This technique is used when a term in the source language does not have a term in the target language. 7. Discursive Creation commit to user 10 library.uns.ac.id digilib.uns.ac.id Discursive Creation uses of equivalent translation techniques while away from their original context. These techniques often appear in the translation of titles of movies, books, and novels. 8. Established Equivalence Established Equivalence translates terms in the source language term that is already prevalent in the target language. The term in the source language is generally based on a dictionary or phrase daily. 9. Generalization Generalization translates a term with the term that is already well known in public and known to the wider community. This technique is used when a term in the source language refers to a specific section, which parallels in the target language that does not exist and refers to the same section. 10. Linguistics Amplification Linguistics Amplification adds elements of Linguistics from SL into the TL. This technique is often used in interpreting or dubbing. 11. Linguistics Compression Linguistics Compression unites or collects the linguistic elements that exist in the SL. This technique is often used in interpreting or dubbing. Literal Translation translates an expression in SL in the word of words into the TL. 13. Modulation Modulation replaces focus the point of view or the cognitive aspect that exists in the SL, either lexical or structural. 14. Particularization Particularization uses terms that are more concrete and specific. The technique contrasts with the technique of generalization.

It sketches a variety of Indonesia's Arabs—sadah and non-sadah alike— and their contributions to the shape of Indonesian Islam, Islamic cultures and Muslim politics. It also traces the roots of—and depicts the historical dynamics and changes—social relations and interactions between Arabs and local populations. The relations between Arabs and non-Arabs in the country have always been marked with conflict and tensions on the one hand, and peace and cooperation on the other. Some Muslims in the country "have admired" and built a strong relationship with the Arabs and "Indo-Arabs" while others have denounced them as the destroyers of Indonesia's local traditions, civic pluralism, social stability and interreligious tolerance. This article tries to portray this paradox, discuss factors contributing to the damaging image of Arabs in contemporary Indonesia, and explain the rationales behind it.

Dari percakapan ini, ada sebuah kesan bahwa Soekarno yang tadinya tidak banyak mengerti masalah agama Islam, kini dari percakapan itu Soekarno pemikirannya menjadi luas. Dalam keadaan inilah Ahmad Hassan melihat Soekarno tak ubahnya sebagai Mustafa Kamal yang menjadikan Turki sebagai negara sekuler dan menyia- nyiakan agama yang diyakini oleh penduduknya. • Ethnic Minority Politics in Jakarta's Gubernatorial Election
ISSUE: 2017 No. 39 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE ANALYSE CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 9 June 2017 Ethnic Minority Politics in Jakarta’s Gubernatorial Election Ahmad Najib Burhani* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Both candidates in the run-off election for the Jakarta governorship were members of economically successful ethnic minorities. Anies Baswedan’s Arabic ancestry aided him in this election. Incumbent governor Ahok’s Chinese minority status was clearly detrimental. The rise of identity politics challenges democratic Indonesia’s efforts to manage its ethnic and religious diversity. Arabic ancestry may prove detrimental for political candidates in upcoming elections, particularly against pribumi candidates. * Ahmad Najib Burhani is Visiting Fellow at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute. He wishes to thank Andrew Michael Carruthers and Hui Yew-Foong for their comments and suggestions on this article. 1 ISSUE: 2017 No. 39 ISSN 2335-6677 INTRODUCTION After a heated contest for Jakarta’s governorship, the KPU announced that Anies Rasyid Baswedan, an Indonesian of Hadhrami origin, had won the election. He is not the first Indonesian of Arab descent to be elected governor or appointed into high political office in Indonesia. Fadel Muhammad, also an ethnic Arab and a leader of Al-Khairat (an old Arab organization) in Palu, is the current governor of Gorontalo. Said Assegaf is the present governor of Maluku province. During the New Order, Ali Alatas maintained a high profile in the Indonesian government, serving as a long-time Minister of Foreign Affairs. Marie Muhammad, Fuad Bawazier, Saleh Afif, Alwi Shihab, Muhammad Quraish Shihab, Said Agil Husein Al-Munawwar, Salim Segal Al-Jufri, and Nabiel Makariem are also notable names and former ministers of Hadhrami descent.

  • The Grand Old
