Michigan Tech’s English Proficiency Test Score Requirements for J-1 Scholars
All international J-1 Scholars applicants are required to show proof of English language proficiency to be considered to bring J-1 visitor to campus. The following tests are all accepted, but you only need to submit one test score:
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
Online Scholar English Language Assessments test are available through the English Language Institute Office.
The Scholar English Language Assessment is designed to help ensure that scholars are able to use language at a level that would allow them to be self-sufficient in the community while conducting their research and personal business.

Submission of an English proficiency test score may be waived depending on country of origin and/or prior study or work in the U.S. Please see the list below of countries exempt from the English proficiency requirements.
