A long-term warming trend between 14,600 and 10,000 cal. yr BP is punctuated by two brief plateaux between 14,200-13,800 and 13,500-12,000 cal. yr BP. Periods of relatively drier conditions are inferred between 14,000-13,400 and 12,000-10,000 cal. -

BEYOND THE LENS THE MARTI & GERRARD FRIEDLANDER COLLECTION Marti Friedlander’s contribution to the development of contemporary New Zealand art has been quite simply outstanding and it is with great honour that we bring you this catalogue, Beyond the Lens - The Marti and Gerrard Friedlander Collection. Celebrated and respected for her photography, but also for her generosity, in later life Marti became known to many of us through the causes that she and Gerrard supported with great passion. Breast cancer, issues of Māoridom and helping young people – all these were causes close to their hearts. Marti was an unforgettable character to those that knew her. Curious and direct, with a distinctive gravelly voice and an accent that gave away her Northern Hemisphere start in life. I was most interested to read Kathlene Fogarty’s account of Driving with Marti, mainly as I had previously assumed that Marti didn’t drive. Having lived and worked in Parnell for years, she was a most familiar figure to locals; striding purposefully up Brighton Road and determinedly around the village, frequently pausing to chat and always stopping for coffee. Known for her strong personality and love of people, Marti’s curiosity for the strange new land she came to with husband Gerrard in 1958 was borne out in the photographs she took. Over the next fifty years she famously photographed not only the landscape but it’s people – both the ordinary and the extraordinary - in a time well before the notion of celebrity existed. Her visual record of our country in a time of change and maturation is invaluable. -

When Storylines put the call out for tributes to Margaret Mahy, they came in thick and fast - long and short - from all walks of life. From close friends, colleagues, and fans. From people who had worked closely with Margaret, those who had met her once - or a few times - and from those who never met her. But, all of us have been blessed by Margaret's life and work. And, all of us were grateful to share our thoughts. We thank you all. We are sorry that we couldn't share ALL the photos... there were so many! Herewith - with little editing - are the words of Margaret's friends and fans... Margaret Mahy is my role model. She inspired me to start writing stories and I haven’t stopped since. She opened the gateway to my passion when I met her properly for the first time at a Storylines Festival. I was nervous when I waited in the (very long) queue for her autograph, I was speechless and I didn’t know what to say. But soon my nervousness went away when we started talking, she was warm and friendly and she drew a picture of one of her characters next to her eloquent signature. It was one of the greatest opportunities in my life meeting Margaret Mahy. My admiration for Margaret Mahy formed when I was six. She came to our school wearing a funky, rainbow-coloured wig; she performed a hilarious puppet show that I can still remember. -

Let’s remember, understand, embrace and own our history, because it is a big part of who we are as a nation. Vincent O’Malley, The New Zealand Wars Ngā Pakanga o Aotearoa Abstract In the 1960s, my grandfather Ormond Wilson devoted himself to restoring the site of the last fixed battle of the New Zealand wars, Te Pōrere, in the central North Island. As chair of the recently formed Historic Places Trust, Ormond was involved in the creation of what the French historian Pierre Nora has called “lieux de mémoire” or sites of memory. Nora argues that such sites are a modern phenomenon that demonstrate the rupture between traditional environments of memory (or “milieux de mémoire”) and historical research and consciousness in a modern sense. In this essay, I reflect on how Ormond’s work can be read differently, as revealing an entanglement or “knotted” historical practice as he worked at Te Pōrere, a place with which his family had a longer connection. Ours is the only car when we pull up and park in front of the signs introducing visitors to Te Pōrere pā, the site of the last fixed battle of the New Zealand wars. It’s mid-winter and we have driven slowly and determinedly along state highway 47, the road that crosses the vast eerie landscape of the Tongariro Volcanic plateau and connects National Park to Tokaanu, resisting the feeling of being pressed into the earth by the lowering sky. -

New Zealand Journal of History, 40, 2 (2006) The Politics of Post-War Consumer Culture THE 1940s ARE INTERESTING YEARS in the story of New Zealand’s consumer culture. The realities of working and spending, and the promulgation of ideals and moralities around consumer behaviour, were closely related to the political process. Labour had come to power in 1935 promising to alleviate the hardship of the depression years and improve the standard of living of all New Zealanders. World War II intervened, replacing the image of increasing prosperity with one of sacrifice. In the shadow of the war the economy grew strongly, but there remained a legacy of shortages at a time when many sought material advancement. Historical writing on consumer culture is burgeoning internationally, and starting to emerge in New Zealand. There is already some local discussion of consumption in the post-war period, particularly with respect to clothing, embodiment and housing.1 This is an important area for study because, as Peter Gibbons points out, the consumption of goods — along with the needs they express and the desires they engender — deeply affects individual lives and social relationships.2 A number of aspects of consumption lend themselves to historical analysis, including the economic, the symbolic, the moral and the political. By exploring the political aspects of consumption and their relationships to these other strands, we can see how intense contestation over the symbolic meaning of consumption and its relationship to production played a pivotal role in defining the differences between the Labour government and the National opposition in the 1940s. -

Owens,& B. Fitzharris,** B. F. Ryan,++ and J.-F. Gayet** ABSTRACT The Southern Alps Experiment is being mounted to study the influence of New Zealand's Southern Alps on local weather and climate. This paper describes these alpine influences and outlines proposed field and modeling experi- ments. Experiment goals include understanding and quantifying factors that govern the intensity and spatial distribu- tion of heavy rainfall, the west to east distribution of precipitation across the mountains, and the intensity of lee wind storms and warming. Linked research will explore the use of deterministic rainfall models to predict river flows from mountain watersheds. 1. A Review of Topoclimatology in New Zealand

Box 56, Dunedin, New Zealand ABSTRACT Because New Zealand is such a hilly country it contains a wide range of topoclimates but these have received surprisingly little attention. Development of horticulture, continued hydroelectric power developments, irrigation planning, large industrial proposals, and investigations into local air pollution problems have stimulated interest in topoclimates. Studies which examine the spatial variation of climate by using the network of climate stations in New Zealand are reviewed, but it is concluded that these give only a general indication of topoclimates. Some papers attempt to fill in the gaps between climate stations with temporary special purpose measurements, or by finding relationships that allow mapping. The main topics discussed in the New Zealand literature are local airflows, wind and shelter, growing degree days, effectiveness of various frost fighting techniques, measurement of vertical temperature structure of the boundary layer, and winter chill units. Unlike the case for other natural resources, such as soils, there is no systematic programme for the mapping of topoclimates at scales that might be useful to horticulture.
