Far North Districts Rugby League Kerikeri, Moerewa, Kaikohe, Whanau, Otaua, Waima, Pawarenga, Muriwhenua, Tehiku, Ngati Kahu, The Academy PO Box 546 Kaitaia 60 North Rd Kaitaia 09 408 1800 Monday 23 November 2015 To the Member Clubs of the Far North District Rugby League Rugby League Northland’s (RLN) rejection of our proposals in favour of a structure that has always favoured Whangarei clubs over the clubs of the Far North is disappointing, but not surprising given that the Board is essentially made up of people who live in and around Whangarei. The cost of travel means there has never been a level playing field for Rugby League in Northland. The 6 Whangarei clubs travel no more than 30 minutes for 70% of their games; the far north clubs travel up to 5 hours for 70% of theirs. RLN has done nothing to remedy the situation. Even when we offered solutions, RLN rejected them. They: Rejected our proposal for a two-division competition that would make it easier for Far North clubs to participate in Rugby League. Rejected our proposal to have the Top 8 clubs in both Whangarei and the Far North play off in a high-profile high-quality Finals Series. Rejected our proposal for a north-south competition that would help build district rivalry, provide a trial series for the Northland Swords, and help promote the game. Refused to set up a group of 3 from the Far North, 3 from Whangarei and a representative of the Board to see how our proposal might actually work. Refuses to recognise that we have 5 new clubs wanting to join our 5 existing clubs, because they are excited about playing in a 10-team Far North competition. -

NGTI HMUA ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION SHEETS Produced by Rangitne o Wairarapa Inc in conjunction with Greater Wellington 2006 2 NGTI HMUA ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION SHEETS This education resource provides the reader with information about the environment from the perspective of the Ngti Hmua hap of Rangitne o Wairarapa iwi. There are 9 separate sheets with each one focussing on a different aspect of Mori customary belief. The first two sheets look at history relating to Ngti Hmua starting with the creation myth and the Maori gods (Nga Atua). The second sheet (Tupuna) looks at the Ngti Hmua ancestors that have some link to the Wairarapa including Maui – who fished up Aotearoa, Kupe – the first explorer to these shores, Whtonga aboard the Kurahaup waka and his descendants. The remaining sheets describe the values, practices or uses that Ngti Hmua applied to their environment in the Wairarapa valleys, plains, mountains, waterways and coastal areas. The recording of this information was undertaken so that people from all backgrounds can gain an appreciation of the awareness that the kaumtua of Ngti Hmua have of the natural world. Rangitne o Wairarapa and Greater Wellington Regional Council are pleased to present this information to the people of the Wairarapa and beyond. Its land area of over 600 square kilometres dominates the southern part of the Auckland Region. I The territorial integrity of the district, which stretches from the edge of the Auckland isthmus in the north to the Hunua ranges in the South, is interrupted only by the local authority enclaves of Papatoetoe City and 0tahuhu and Howick I Boroughs. The Manukau City Centre, 25 km south of Auckland Centre, is the natural geographical focus of the city's urban area . When fully developed the urban area I will stretch out from the Centre southwards to Manurewa and Takanini, northeastwards to Otara and Pakuranga and northwest to Mangere. Two-thirds of the City's land area is in rural use, ranging from dairy and town milk supply I units to pastoral farming, horticulture and forestry . A distinctive feature of the district is its extensive coastline of 320 km. -

A Social and Cultural History of the New Zealand Horse A Thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In History Massey University, Albany, New Zealand Carolyn Jean Mincham 2008 i Abstract Both in the present and the past, horses have a strong presence in New Zealand society and culture. The country’s temperate climate and colonial environment allowed horses to flourish and accordingly became accessible to a wide range of people. Horses acted as an agent of colonisation for their role in shaping the landscape and fostering relationships between coloniser and colonised. Imported horses and the traditions associated with them, served to maintain a cultural link between Great Britain and her colony, a characteristic that continued well into the twentieth century. Not all of these transplanted readily to the colonial frontier and so they were modified to suit the land and its people. There are a number of horses that have meaning to this country. The journey horse, sport horse, work horse, warhorse, wild horse, pony and Māori horse have all contributed to the creation of ideas about community and nationhood. How these horses are represented in history, literature and imagery reveal much of the attitudes, values, aspirations and anxieties of the times. -

COCHRANE University of Auckland That Polynesian ritual architecture (Fig. 1) displays similarities due to cultural relatedness is uncontroversial. Like many other aspects of Polynesian life— language, culture, belief—there are architectural similarities across islands and archipelagos that are a product of people learning from each other, shared cultural ancestry and, perhaps less often, independent invention or convergent evolution (Kirch and Green 2001). There is also a long history of research on the cultural relatedness of Polynesian ritual architecture. In the 19th century Fornander (1969: 33-35, 59) suggested that some later Hawaiian heiau ‘ritual architecture’ owed their distinctive form to building techniques learned from voyagers newly arrived from the south. Later, archaeologists and anthropologists such as Emory (1933) and Linton (1925) suggested inter-archipelago interaction and ancestral connections as explanations for similarities in ritual architecture. Discussing the use of shaped, rectangular stone slabs set on end in a variety of ritual architecture, Linton outlined the evidence both for the independent invention of this construction technique throughout Polynesia, and contrastingly for its singular origin and dissemination throughout the region, “although the originating group [of islands] cannot now be determined” (Linton 1925: 19). Reilly Tēnā koutou katoa, Kia orana kōtou katoatoa, Tangi kē, Welcome and Good Evening. This lecture presents the views of someone anthropologists call a participant-observer, and Māori characterise as a Pākehā, a manuhiri (guest, visitor), or a tangata kē (stranger); the latter two terms contrast with the permanence of the indigenous people, the tangata whenua (people of the land). All of us in this auditorium affiliate to one of these two categories, tangata kē and tangata whenua; sometimes to both. We are all inheritors of a particular history of British colonisation that unfolded within these lands from the 1800s (a legacy that Hone Tuwhare describes as ‘Victoriana-Missionary fog hiding legalized land-rape / and gentlemen thugs’).1 This legalized violation undermined the hospitality and respect assumed between tangata whenua and tangata kē. -

Constructing the Other News Media Representations of a Predominantly ‘Brown’ Community in New Zealand
CLIMATE CHANGE IN ASIA-PACIFIC Constructing the Other News media representations of a predominantly ‘brown’ community in New Zealand Abstract: Research worldwide finds that indigenous, non-white, immigrant and other marginalised communities are subjected to media coverage that negatively and narrowly stereotypes them in comparison to dominant racial groups. In this article, we explore media representations of a predominantly Pacific and lower socio-economic community in New Zealand. The results contribute to the literature regarding media coverage of minority communities through an analysis of 388 news articles, drawing on Freire’s (1996/1970) theory of antidialogical action to consider how power is used to marginalise the predominantly Pacific community of South Auckland. The results dem- onstrate that South Aucklanders are subjected to stereotypes and negative labelling that reinforce their marginalisation and exclusion from mainstream New Zealand culture. Keywords: ethnicity, marginalisation, news media, New Zealand, Pacific peoples, Pākehā, representation JEAN M ALLEN and TONI BRUCE University of Auckland Introduction N THIS article, we explore media representations of a predominantly Pacific1 and lower socio-economic community in New Zealand, through the lens of IPaulo Freire’s theory of antidialogical action. For Freire (1970/1996), the pow- er imbalance between what he describes as the haves and have-nots is a form of oppressive action that permits domination over, or prejudicial treatment of, one group or individual by another. In Freire’s (1970/1996) conceptualisation of power as primarily oppressive, power imbalances are maintained through antidialogical action, which limits dialogue between the empowered and the marginalised and hinders the ability of marginalised groups to recognise or gain consciousness of their oppression. -
