AP Euro Salon Schill
To help us understand the ideas of the Enlightenment we are going to have a French Enlightenment Salon simulation. Each of you is being assigned a figure from the era.
On Wednesday December 14th, you will have no more than 2 min. to introduce yourself. This will be done without notes.
This should include: 1. full name 2. A brief summary of your philosophy 3. Name of your main work 4. Your country 5. An important term 6. your legacy (why you are remembered) 7. Someone with whom you are connected as a mentor, antagonist, etc
On Thursday December 15th report directly to the Community Room. We will be there from 7:23-10:34. There will be snacks. You need to come dressed for a salon (Outstanding is period costume but acceptable is at least “dress up” clothes). Each Person should create a personalized nametag for themselves that includes your name, title (if you have one) and a mini-portrait of you. It should in some way be creative, distinctive and memorable so that it shows the essence of your character.. Thirty (30!!) no larger than 3 X 5 typed, professional looking business cards of the person you are representing. Templates are available online. These are to be passed out at the Salon. Make sure to include: Name and Title, Address (City, Country), Occupation, Written/published works, Major thoughts and ideas on government, religion, economics, or society, should include a Logo or a Symbol. If you need to print these at school, please plan on Resource on Tuesday Dec 13th or after school on Dec. 14th. I have gotten a lot of flack for excessive printing in other classes. You need to come prepared to discuss the ideas in Voltaire’s Candide. Each guest should bring an index card (with notes on it- to be turned in) with at least 2 events, situations, or themes from the book that he/she wants to discuss from the POV of the assigned persona taking into consideration that person’s philosophy.
We will focus on the following topics : purpose and structure of government place of the individual in society law & order gender roles education equality religion the nature of man.
Each guest will be expected to participate in the discussion.
While there are many places to begin your research- one site that I would check out is: http://plato.stanford.edu
