Theatre Terminology: • Types of stages (proscenium, thrust, arena, raked) and venues, and their influence on audience experience • Parts of a stage (upstage, downstage, stage left/right, wings, apron, legs, teaser curtain, cyclorama, etc.) • Positions of responsibility in theatre (Stage Manager, Scenic Designer, Crew Manager, etc.) • General literary theatre terms and structure (exposition, rising action, stage directions, etc.)

Safety and Standard Theatrical Practices for Technical Theatre: • Clothing guidelines for constructing and painting scenery and working on crew • Procedures for using power tools and ladders • Procedures for using and storing paint and painting materials • Procedures for constructing, managing and cleaning costumes • Safety procedures for electrical devices used for lighting and sound • Procedures for running, properties, costume, lighting and sound crews

Second Quarter:

Script analysis for designers

Aristotle’s elements of theatre: music, thought, spectacle, language, character, plot

Basics of design and simple project for: • Scenic design • Costume design • Makeup design • Lighting design • Sound design

Third Quarter:

Theatre History: • Early Theatre (Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Medieval) • Commedia De l’Arte • Elizabethan Theatre/Shakespeare • Renaissance • Musical Theatre

Complete a historically accurate design project with one example for: • Scenic design • Costume design • Makeup design • Lighting design • Sound design

Build a model of scenic design

Fourth Quarter:

Participate in building and painting set for class or school production. Participate in house, running, makeup, properties, costume, lighting or sound crew for class or school production.
