15-18 MARZO FESTA DEL LIBRO E DELLA LETTURA Musica per Roma | Fondazione Acosta Lora | Carlos Tomas Director © Creative Comunicato Stampa AL VIA LIBRI COME - FELICITÀ ATTESI A ROMA 300 SCRITTORI E 130 INCONTRI IN 9 ANNI CIRCA 300 MILA PERSONE HANNO PARTECIPATO ALLA MANIFESTAZIONE A cura di Marino Sinibaldi, Michele De Mieri, Rosa Polacco Partirà giovedì 15 marzo, e durerà fino a domenica 18 marzo, la IX edizione diLibri Come, la manifestazione curata da Marino Sinibaldi, Michele De Mieri e Rosa Polacco e prodotta da Fondazione Musica per Roma, che porta a Roma libri, autori, editori, lettori, in una grande Festa del Libro e della Lettura che per quattro giorni invade gli spazi e le sale dell’Auditorium Parco della Musica. Il tema di quest’anno sarà Felicità, parola bella e ingombrante, ricca di significati e di contraddizioni, di possibilità e promesse, individuali e collettive. Come ogni anno gli appassionati dei libri potranno “sfogliare” il tema che sarà al centro di lezioni, presentazioni, dialoghi, reading, e come sempre trovare le novità, i libri più attesi, e quelli che già fanno parlare lettori e addetti ai lavori. Non mancheranno gli incontri per le scuole, le mostre, gli spettacoli. Come lo scorso anno Libri Come inizia con un’originale inaugurazione in collaborazione con le Biblioteche di Roma: in 10 biblioteche sparse per i quartieri della città verranno presentati 10 libri da 10 scrittori, tutti in contemporanea alle ore 18. Inoltre grande novità di quest’anno, prima dell’inizio ufficiale della festa, due anteprime a Milano, a Tempo di Libri, e a Roma nel nuovo spazio WEGILL di Trastevere con il romanziere irlandese Roddy Doyle. -

Comparative Literary Studies Program Course Descriptions 2013-2014 Fall 2013 CLS 206: Literature and Media: LaByrinths Lectures: TTh 11:00-12:20, Fisk B17 Instructor: Domietta Torlasco Expected Enrollment: Course Description: This course will trace a brief history of labyrinths through literature, architecture, cinema, and new media. From classical mythology to cutting-edge computer games, the figure of the labyrinth has shaped the way in which we ask crucial questions about space, time, perception, and technology. Whether an actual maze or a book or a film, the labyrinth presents us with an entanglement of lines and pathways that is as demanding as it is engrossing and even exhilarating. As we move from medium to medium, or pause in between media, the labyrinth will in turn emerge as an archetypal image, a concrete pattern, a narrative structure, a figure of thought, a mode of experience....Among the works which we will analyze are Jorge Luis Borges' celebrated short stories, Italo Calvino's experiments in detective fiction, Mark Z. Danielewski' hyper- textual novelHouse of Leaves, films such as Orson Welles' Citizen Kane (1941), Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980), and Christopher Nolan's Inception (2010), and the more intellectually adventurous video games. Evaluation Method: 1. Attendance and participation to lectures AND discussion sessions (25% of the final grade). Please note that more than three absences will automatically reduce your final grade. 2. Two short response papers (15%). 3. Mid-term exam (25%). 4. Final 5-6 page paper (35%). Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time. -

The morphological aspects of the territory; the colors; the human trace on the physical territory; the history, culture and traditions are but some of the elements of a landscape fascination. The Veneto region, where Padua always played and still plays a lively cultural role, is particularly rich of suggestions and throughout the centuries inspired artists, musicians, writers. Johann W. Goethe, Lord Byron or Henry James wrote beautiful memories of their Italian journey and left us extraordinary depictions of cities like Padua, Venice and Verona surrounded by hills, mountains, lagoon, but also rural landscapes. Following the path of these famous travelers, the course aims to offer students the opportunity to discover the Veneto region through literary and cultural experiences. By means of on-site lessons, readings and field trips, students are able to recognize the local identity that deepens its roots into the landscape (natural and anthropic), culture (progress and tradition), language (Italian and dialect), history and society. During the course, students will read and discuss extracts from works by Luigi Meneghello, Mario Rigoni Stern, Dino Buzzati or Giovanni Comisso to only mention some, and visit places such as the Dolomites, the Veneto countryside, or cities like Padova, Treviso, Vicenza or Venezia. -
