YEAR 7 HANDBOOK Welcome from the Principal

I am delighted that your child will be joining us at Oasis Sholing from September 2020.

Oasis Academy Sholing became part of the Oasis family, including a wider community based “hub” in September 2018. An exciting time and an opportunity to continue to transform lives positively and continue to create a culture where all students are striving for excellence. Success really does emerge when we work, learn and develop together. is a great school to lead and be a part of, our students constantly show that they can challenge misconceptions and aim to achieve their personal best.

Working in as a leader for over 15 years in a city which has a particular heart, we have such an opportunity to thrive and develop our leaders of tomorrow. As I say to our students, if your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more you are a leader.

At Oasis Academy Sholing we strongly believe in celebrating success through world class aspiration and recognise the enjoyment in learning so that all are inspired to achieve.

Since joining the school in 2014 I have recognised that community and family is central, there really is a pride in our area and parents believe that exceptional education should, quite rightly, be a right for all.

We have an established induction programme of events to support your child’s transition to .

• New Intake Parents Evening Monday 29th June 2020 • Year 6 Transition for 4 days from Monday 29th June to Thursday 2nd July 2020 • Visits by Oasis Academy Sholing staff to cluster primary schools

On behalf of the students and staff of Oasis Academy Sholing we extend a very warm welcome and I look forward to meeting your child during our Transition Week.

Martin Brown Principal Transition Opportunities 2020

At Oasis Academy Sholing the most important thing to us is that each new student starts Year 7 feeling safe, secure, happy and enthused to be part of their new school. This not only applies to students; we also want parents to be well informed about the move their child will make from primary to secondary school.

Transition from primary to secondary school does not begin in Year 6. We ensure that our primary liaison and transition work begins as early as Year 5 and continues into Year 6 and beyond. The students are supported at every stage of their development through secondary school.

We are very proud of the successful transition of students from Year 6 to Year 7, and the students always feel prepared and ready to begin their new adventure.

We welcome you as new students and parents to our Academy community, and look forward to you spending five successful years with us.

Mrs S Chudley Head of Year 7 Curriculum at Oasis Academy Sholing At Oasis Academy Sholing our curriculum is designed to provide all students with a broad, balanced, differentiated and enriching experience which allows each of them to achieve their potential and prepares them for the opportunities of adult life.

Our curriculum enables students to: • Secure the maximum possible success in public examinations. • Develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of the world around them. • Establish a love of learning whilst helping to recognise the pleasure and enjoyment that can be gained from the acquisition of new knowledge. • Develop an awareness of moral values, and to become sensitive and aware of the moral values of others. • Promote fundamental British values by developing such qualities of character and personality as this will help them to take their place as active citizens in a pluralistic, multicultural and democratic modern Britain. In addition to the core subjects of Mathematics, English, Science and Physical Education, students in KS3 study a range of creative arts subjects, Technology, Humanities, Personal and Social Education, and a choice of either French or Spanish. “The best lesson is food tech because we make lots of different food” Year 7 student Extra-Curricular Activities

We offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities here at Oasis Academy Sholing. From being part of the netball team to being transported through time in the history department’s weekly film club, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

A number of Creative Arts clubs provide opportunities for students to develop their interests outside lessons. These run either at lunchtime (when students can bring their lunch to the club and register there) or after school. Weekly clubs available to Year 7 include drama club, art club, wind band, choir and ukulele club, and these feed into a number of annual events.

Recently our media department have been running a Young Filmmaker club which has allowed students to make a short film. Students have enjoyed the process of writing, directing and starring in the film.

Cashless Catering System The Oasis Academy Sholing has a cashless catering system. We cannot accept cash at the till points when purchases are made. Your child will have the opportunity to register for the system during transition week. We will need you to complete the enclosed biometric consent form. Q. What is biometric?

A. Biometric is simply a method of identifying an individual person. We will be using an algorithm based scan, which reads between 50 and 130 points on the finger/thumb. It is not a fingerprint in any way, shape or form and is of use only in the cashless system. Q. How does a biometric system work? A. The information of a student or staff member, who has been registered on the biometric system, is stored on a secure biometric controller within the school, which only our provider,Nationwide Retail Systems Ltd, can access. Once an account is credited the student or staff member places their finger/thumb on the EPOS Terminal, which looks up their account details and allows them to purchase items using only this method of identification. Q. How does my child register on the Biometric System? A. During transition week your child will attend at a requested time and they will be required to place their finger/thumb on a Biometric sensor twice to obtain a matching template, which only takes a few seconds. If you have chosen to ‘Opt Out’ of this procedure, your child will be presented with a 4 digit PIN Code. Q. What methods of payment can be used to credit an account?

A. Oasis Academy Sholing is a cashless site. Payments can only be made online via Scopay. Once an account has been credited the monies cannot be withdrawn and must be spent on school meals.
