Refocus the Films of Teuvo Tulio The Films of ReFocus: The International Directors Series Series Editors: Robert Singer and Gary D. Rhodes This series aims to produce new critical volumes from an interdisciplinary perspective which bring influential, yet neglected, international directors to the attention of a new audience of scholars and students in Film Studies. ReFocus ‘At long last – a book dedicated to one of Scandinavia’s most significant Tulio Teuvo The Films of directors of the twenty-first century: Susanne Bier. Addressing key works and developments of Bier’s career at home and abroad, Refocus: The Films of Susanne Bier is a significant milestone with contributions by some Teuvo Tulio of the most inspiring and insightful scholars of Nordic cinema today.‘ An Excessive Outsider Anna Westerståhl Stenport, Georgia Institute of Technology From early, lesser known films, such as Freud’s Leaving Home, to the Academy HENRY BACON, KIMMO LAINE AND JAAKKO SEPPÄLÄ Award-winning In a Better World and the recent hit BBC television series The Night Manager, ReFocus: The Films of Susanne Bier covers the entirety of the versatile Danish director’s oeuvre. Having worked in Scandinavia, Hollywood, and the UK, Susanne Bier is known for her industrial fluidity, moving confidently between genres and media. – all at a time when gender inequality in film ensures that women seldom sit in the director’s chair. BACON, KIMMO LAINE HENRY This book offers a timely consideration of Bier’s impressive authorial achievements AND JAAKKO SEPPÄLÄ and features dynamic essays from both recognised and up-and-coming scholars in Scandinavian, gender and sexuality, and transnational film and media studies. It concludes with an original interview with Bier, providing unique insight into the creative process of one of contemporary cinema’s prominent innovators. Missy Molloy is a Lecturer in Film Studies at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. Mimi Nielsen is a PhD Candidate in Comparative Literature at the University of Washington, Seattle. Rhodes Editorial Board: Lizelle Bisschoff, Stephanie Hemelryck Donald, Anna Misiak and Des O’Rawe ReFocus is a series of contemporary methodological and theoretical approaches to the interdisciplinary analyses and interpretations of international film directors, from the celebrated to the ignored, in direct relationship to their respective culture – its myths, values and historical precepts – and the broader parameters of international film history and theory. The series provides a forum for introducing a broad spectrum of directors, working in and establishing movements, trends, cycles and genres including those historical, currently popular, or emergent, and in need of critical assessment or reassessment. It ignores no director who created a historical space – either in or outside of the studio system – beginning with the origins of cinema and up to the present. ReFocus brings these film directors to a new audience of scholars and general readers of Film Studies.

Frans Emil Sillanpää (1888-1964) Finnish writer, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1939. Sillanpää saw human beings as a small but integral part of the universe. Influenced by the German scientist Ernst Haeckel and Wilhelm Ostwald, and their theories about the unity of all nature in terms of physical laws, Sillanpää portrayed rural people living united with the land and dependent on the energy of the sun, the source of all life. Although Sillanpää based his work on knowledge of evolution theory and genetics, his picture of the agrarian society was rather idealized. Frans Emil Sillanpää was born into a peasant family in Hämeenkyrö, at Myllykolu Croft in Kierikkala Village in southwest Finland. His father, Frans Henrik Koskinen, was an impoverished day-laborer. Loviisa Vilhelmina Mäkelä, his mother, was a servant, who returned to home to give birth to an illegitimate child. She married Frans Henrik at the age of 34. Although poor, the family saved money to send Sillanpää to Tampere grammar school. Sillanpää lived in the working-class Amuri district and later moved to the home of his benefactor, the manufacturer Henrik Liljeroos.

The Unesco Eternal cinema Atimetolive... 26 India Living dangerously Danger is a way of life for film stunt men, the unsung heroes of the cinema. Jumping off roof¬ tops, falling off horses, crashing cars at high speed, day after day, film after film, they risk their lives to add vicarious excitement to the humdrum existence of the average cinema-goer. Above, a tense moment for two Indian stunt men during filming of the Second World War adven¬ ture film Lalkar. The Unesco Courier A window open on the world Editorial August 1984 37th year IT is a cruel paradox that the cinema, the most popular art of the twentieth century, should also be the most threatened. No art form has been (and continues to be) a prey to such destruction which, whether wilful or accidental, has caused losses on a massive scale. The disastrous implications of these losses for the memory of mankind are now fully appreciated. In this issue of the Unesco Courier, which is entirely devoted to the safeguard and preserva¬ tion of the world's film heritage, the two major causes of destruc¬ tion are analysed in detail. One stems from attitudes of mind to films and the cinema; the other has to do with the chemistry of motion picture film. The cultural value of the cinema was ignored and even denied for far too long, and the film was considered exclusively as a commer¬ cial commodity. In many countries huge quantities of film were thrown onto the scrap-heap, wantonly despoiled in ruthless and 4 The fragile art of film reckless waves of destruction unleashed whenever they seemed to be by Raymond Borde required by changing tastes and fashions in film and new technical developments.

Nykyisellään Suomessa asuu noin pari tuhatta latvialaista. Kirja jakaantuu kahteen osaan. Osassa I luodaan yleiskuva Suo- men ja Latvian suhteisiin halki aikojen.
