FILKON TO PARTICIPATE IN TEAK CANADA CHINA MISSION - - - Asian Trip To Focus on Increasing Trade Links

Premier Gary Filmon will leave tomorrow to participate in the federal-provincial Team Canada trade mission to China and Hong Kong Nov. 4 to 13.

The mission, led by the prime minister, nine provincial premiers and two territorial leaders will also include about 300 senior business representatives from across Canada.

"The Team Canada mission has been in the planning stages for many months," said Filmon, "and its size reflects the importance the nation's first ministers attach to increasing our trade links with Asia."

"Several Manitoba organizations, such as XCan Grain, Richardson's, Agri-Tec, Feed Rite and the Canadian Wheat Board will be sending representatives to take part in the mission," said the premier.

While in China Filmon will have the opportunity to meet with Premier , Vice Premier , President , Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation Wu Yi and the Mayor of Shanghai .

"My participation in the Team Canada mission also offers the opportunity to follow up two previous missions to China as well as several recent return visits by Chinese delegations to Manitoba," said Filmon.

"For example, on November 8 we will meet in Beijing with the Governor Ma and Vice-Governor Yu of Henan province (China's second-largest province) to sign an agreement of economic co-operation dealing with agricultural facilities, resource and energy development, environmental protection, communication technology, health care, tourism, transportation and glass manufacturing. This offers tremendous economic potential to Manitoba and is a direct follow up to the letter of understanding on economic co-operation we signed with the vice-governor in Winnipeg a few weeks ago," said the premier.

In announcing his participation in the upcoming trip to Asia, Filmon added that he will be taking part in several other events, during the mission, of interest to Manitoba, including a special Remembrance Day ceremony in Hong Kong in which both Hong Kong veterans from Manitoba and a group of 10 cadets from the Winnipeg Grenadiers will participate.

The premier will also participate in the openings of a Feed-Rite mill in Shanghai, and a Repap sales office and a Canadian Wheat Board office in Beijing.

While in Shanghai, the premier will take part in a special event involving the western premiers and territorial leaders focusing on Shanghai's transportation and trade connections with Western Canada.
