Eyen Dr. Nigel Boyle, Political Studies, Pitzer College Dr. Geoffrey Herrera, Political Studies, Pitzer College A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Political Studies Pitzer College Claremont, California 4 May 2015 2 ABSTRACT This thesis demonstrates the importance of basketball as a form of soft power and a diplomatic asset to better achieve American foreign policy, which is defined and referred to as basketball diplomacy. Basketball diplomacy is also a lens to observe the evolution of American power from 1893 through present day. Basketball connects and permeates foreign cultures and effectively disseminates American influence unlike any other form of soft power, which is most powerfully illustrated by the United States’ basketball relationship with China. American basketball diplomacy will become stronger and connect with more countries with greater influence, and exist without relevant competition, until the likely rise of China in the indefinite future. -

The Statute of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was adopted by the General Assembly on 14 December 1950 as Annex to Resolution 428 (V).n I this Resolution, reproduced on page 4, the Assembly also called upon the Governments to cooperate with the High Com- missioner in the performance of his or her functions concerning refugees fall- ing under the competence of the Office. In accordance with the Statute, the work of the High Commissioner is humanitarian and social and of an entirely non-political character. The functions of the High Commissioner are defined in the Statute and in various Resolutions subsequently adopted by the General Assembly. -

Human Rights in China and U.S. Policy: Issues for the 117th Congress March 31, 2021 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov R46750 SUMMARY R46750 Human Rights in China and U.S. Policy: Issues March 31, 2021 for the 117th Congress Thomas Lum U.S. concern over human rights in China has been a central issue in U.S.-China relations, Specialist in Asian Affairs particularly since the Tiananmen crackdown in 1989. In recent years, human rights conditions in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) have deteriorated, while bilateral tensions related to trade Michael A. Weber and security have increased, possibly creating both constraints and opportunities for U.S. policy Analyst in Foreign Affairs on human rights. After consolidating power in 2013, Chinese Communist Party General Secretary and State President Xi Jinping intensified and expanded the reassertion of party control over society that began toward the end of the term of his predecessor, Hu Jintao. Since 2017, the government has enacted new laws that place further restrictions on civil society in the name of national security, authorize greater controls over minority and religious groups, and further constrain the freedoms of PRC citizens. Government methods of social and political control are evolving to include the widespread use of sophisticated surveillance and big data technologies. Arrests of human rights advocates and lawyers intensified in 2015, followed by party efforts to instill ideological conformity across various spheres of society. In 2016, President Xi launched a policy known as “Sinicization,” under which the government has taken additional measures to compel China’s religious practitioners and ethnic minorities to conform to Han Chinese culture, support China’s socialist system as defined by the Communist Party, abide by Communist Party policies, and reduce ethnic differences and foreign influences. -

It appears that on the 19th instant, the day after the local elections were finished^ Dr. Rauschning wrote to the 8Bnati a long letter stating that he was prepared to return to office if his policy, which be outlined, would be followed. Mr. Rauschning had declared to Mr. Forster that he would only re- tire if and when the Party in power withdrew its confidence and that the lack of confidence must be declared not by the Gauleiter but by the National Socialist parliamentary fraction itself. lir. Rauschning refrained from any action during the electoral campaign but in his letter of the 19th instant he declared that his health was no obstacle to returning to his post, but before doing so the Party would have to declare it- self in accord with his policy. He underlined first the diver- gences with Mr. Forster with regard to economic and financial situation in Danzig, and on matters relating to the conduct of internal affairs. With regard to the financial and economic position the difference with Forster would appear to be that on the one side Forster counted on the continuation of German financial support, and on the other Mr. Rauschning doubted .if this would be possible and held that in any case Danzig should endeavour to solve its difficulties without external help. -

New York parley to discuss plight of Jewish refugees michal lando, jerusalem post correspondent , THE JERUSALEM POST Nov. 5, 2007 Delegates from around the world who convened in New York on Sunday for a two-day conference on the rights of Jewish refugees from Arab countries are concerned that despite promises from Israeli government officials, their cause will not be made a priority at the upcoming Annapolis peace summit. The mission of Justice for Jews from Arab Countries (JJAC), which has brought together 40 delegates from 10 countries, is to ensure that any official mention of Palestinian refugees should be accompanied by a similar mention of the nearly one million Jews from Arab countries who were forced to flee in 1948. JJAC is expected to criticize Israeli inaction over the refugee issue, sources told The Jerusalem Post . Israeli prime ministers dating back to Menachem Begin have ensured that this issue would be on the international political agenda. In 1993, former prime minister Yitzhak Rabin said in an interview with the Jerusalem Arabic daily Al-Quds that "when there is a committee that deals with the problem of refugees, we will claim that there are two problems - the problem of the Palestinian refugees and the problem of the Jewish refugees from the Arab countries." The cabinet reiterated its commitment in 2002 and 2003, in decisions calling for efforts to gather information on Jewish property in Arab countries. But several statements in the last few months by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni have JJAC concerned they might not be as committed to the cause as the group had hoped. -

Besides revealing a wealth of new information on Chinese domestic and foreign policy, in particular on the campaigns of the Mao era like the Great Leap and the Cultural Revolution, the works convey important insights into China’s political culture. In spite of the overt attempts at forging a unified national identity and historiography, they also document the existence of independent, critical thought in China. -

Order Code RS22767 December 5, 2007 China’s 17th Communist Party Congress, 2007: Leadership and Policy Implications Kerry Dumbaugh Specialist in Asian Affairs Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Trade Division Summary The Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) 17th Congress, held from October 15 - 21, 2007, demonstrated the Party’s efforts to try to adapt and redefine itself in the face of emerging economic and social challenges while still trying to maintain its authoritarian one-Party rule. The Congress validated and re-emphasized the priority on continued economic development; expanded that concept to include more balanced and sustainable development; announced that the Party would seek to broaden political participation by expanding intra-Party democracy; and selected two potential rival candidates, Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang, with differing philosophies (rather than one designated successor-in- waiting) as possibilities to succeed to the top Party position in five years. More will be known about the Party’s future prospects and the relative influence of its two potential successors once the National People’s Congress meets in early 2008 to select key government ministers. This report will not be updated. Periodically (approximately every five years) the Chinese Communist Party holds a Congress, attended by some 2,000 senior Party members, to authorize important policy and leadership decisions within the Party for the coming five years. In addition to authorizing substantive policies, the Party at its Congress selects a new Central Committee, comprised of the most important figures in the Party, government, and military.1 The Central Committee in turn technically selects a new Politburo and a new Politburo Standing Committee, comprised of China’s most powerful and important leaders. -

We have thus seen 65 years of the international project of addressing human rights issues at a global level through the United Nations and associated organisations. Human rights occupy a paradoxical place in international politics. Human rights treaties address the most intimate issues of personal freedom, autonomy and self-determination, but the institutions developed for the promotion of human rights operate at a global level seemingly distanced from this intimate and individual scale. In human rights advocacy there is thus constant mediation between the individual, the local, the national, the regional and the global. In this collection of essays we consider human rights issues at the regional level – in some East and Southeast Asian nations and in their associated national and diasporic communities. -
