Hence it is not surprising that the propagation of Christianity often faces the challenge of “political theology”. When the Church of the East monk Aluoben reached China in 635 during the reign of Emperor Tang Taizong, he received the favorable invitation of the emperor to translate Christian sacred texts for the collections of Tang Imperial Library. This marks the beginning of Jingjiao (oY) mission in China. In historiographical sense, China has always been a political domineering society where the role of religion is subservient and secondary. A school of scholarship in Jingjiao studies holds that the fall of Jingjiao in China is the obvious result of its over-involvement in local politics. The flaw of such an assumption is the overlooking of the fact that in the Tang context, it is impossible for any religious establishments to avoid getting in touch with the Tang government. In the light of this notion, this article attempts to approach this issue from the perspective of “political theology” and argues that instead of over-involvement, it is rather the clashing of “ideologies” between the Jingjiao establishment and the ever-changing Tang court’s policies towards foreigners and religious bodies that caused the downfall of Jingjiao Christianity in China. This article will posit its argument based on the analysis of the Chinese Jingjiao canonical texts, especially the Xian Stele, and takes this as a point of departure to observe the political dynamics between Jingjiao and Tang court. -

I declare that my thesis consists of 98,700 words. 3 Abstract: This thesis examines qiaowu [Overseas Chinese affairs] policies during the PRC’s first decade, and it argues that the CCP-controlled party-state’s approach to the governance of the huaqiao [Overseas Chinese] and their affairs was fundamentally a political economy. This was at base, a function of perceived huaqiao economic utility, especially for what their remittances offered to China’s foreign reserves, and hence the party-state’s qiaowu approach was a political practice to secure that economic utility. -

The five biggest were: Zhuan Xu, Di Jun, Huang Di, Yan Di and Shao Hao.However, the Zhuan Xu People seemed to have disappeared when the Yellow and Chang-jiang river valleys developed into advanced Neolithic cultures. Where had the Zhuan Xu People gone? Abstract: Shanhaijing (Classic of Mountains and Seas) records many ancient groups of people in Neolithic China. The five biggest were: Zhuan Xu, Di Jun, Huang Di, Yan Di and Shao Hao. These were not only the names of individuals, but also the names of groups who regarded them as common male ancestors. These groups used to live in the Pamirs Plateau, later spread to other places of China and built their unique ancient cultures during the Neolithic Age. Shanhaijing reveals Zhuan Xu’s offspring lived near the Tibetan Plateau in their early time. They were the first who entered the Tibetan Plateau, but almost perished due to the great environment changes, later moved to the south. Some of them entered the Sichuan Basin and became the founders of Sanxingdui Culture. Some of them even moved to the south of the Tibetan Plateau, living near the sea. Modern archaeological discoveries have revealed the authenticity of Shanhaijing ’s records. 2016-2017 INTRODUCTION The Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange (the Foundation) was established in 1989 in memory of the outstanding achievements of the late President of the Republic of China, Chiang Ching- kuo (1910-1988). The Foundation’s mission is to promote the study of Chinese culture and society, as well as enhance international scholarly exchange. Its principal work is to award grants and fellowships to institutions and individuals conducting Sinological and Taiwan-related research, thereby adding new life to Chinese cultural traditions while also assuming responsibility for the further development of human civilization. Operational funds supporting the Foundation’s activities derive from interest generated from an endowment donated by both the public and private sectors. As of June 1, 2017, the size of this endowment totaled NT$3.62 billion. The Foundation is governed by its Board of Directors (consisting of between 15 and 21 Board Members), as well as 3 Supervisors. Our central headquarters is located in Taipei, Taiwan, with a regional office near Washington D.C. in McLean, Virginia. In addition, the Foundation currently maintains four overseas centers: the Chiang Ching-kuo International Sinological Center at Charles University in Prague (CCK-ISC); the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation Inter-University Center for Sinology at Harvard University (CCK-IUC); the Chinese University of Hong Kong – Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation Asia-Pacific Centre for Chinese Studies (CCK-APC); and the European Research Center on Contemporary Taiwan – A CCK Foundation Overseas Center at Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen (CCKF-ERCCT). There are also review committees for the five regions covering the geographic scope of the Foundation’s operations: Domestic, American, European, Asia-Pacific and Developing. -
