Section 1 2018 Edition

Introduction

“When he was about to celebrate with his disciples the Passover meal in which he instituted the sacrifice of his Body and Blood, Christ the Lord gave instructions that a large, furnished upper room should be prepared (Lk 22:12). The Church has always regarded this command as applying also to herself when she gives directions about the preparation of people’s hearts and minds and of the places, , and texts for the celebration of the Most Holy . The current norms, prescribed in keeping with the will of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, and the new Missal that the Church of the is to use from now on in the celebration of Mass also evidence of the great concern of the Church, of her faith, and of her unchanged love for the great mystery of the Eucharist. They likewise bear witness to the Church’s continuous and unbroken tradition, irrespective of the introduction of certain new features. (GIRM #1)”

The Master of Ceremonies (MC) is a servant leader, properly formed, instructed and commissioned to serve God and God’s people in the liturgy. The position is envisioned in the liturgy of Vatican II as stated in the General Instruction of the , “It is appropriate, at least in cathedrals and in larger churches, to have some competent minister, that is to say a master of ceremonies, to oversee the planning of sacred actions and their being carried out by the sacred ministers and the lay faithful with decorum, , and devotion” (GIRM #106). The MC, trained in all areas of lay ministry at the liturgy, will ensure that all aspects of Christian worship are conducted with hospitality and reverence,

Eligibility • Ability to effectively lead and collaborate with others • Calm and resourceful problem solving skills • Be of sufficient age and maturity to perform the duties identified in this Manual • MC responsibilities do not extend beyond the parish community • Typically, do not perform any other liturgical ministry at the Mass in which they serve as MC

Formation • to beginning their ministry, Master of Ceremonies should be formed and trained in the following: • Theology of the Eucharist and understanding of the Mass • Theology and spirituality of ministry • Universal church, diocesan and parish guidelines and procedures for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy • MCs have knowledge of all ministries involved in the liturgy • MCs must participate in ongoing theological and ministerial formation at the parish and/or diocesan level at a minimum of one session per year

Procedures Upon Arrival for Liturgy • Arrive 45 minutes before the Liturgy and sign in on the sheet in the ministry room • Review mass notes in the MC binder for instructions about mass and put nametag on

Items in Commons: • Turn on lights in hallway leading to commons (switch at door from parking lot) • Turn on lights in Stewardship center and hallway (switch on wall to your right) • Turn lights on in the commons (switch located on right at the entrance doors) • Collect mass bulletins from the stands and place them in the Usher’s closet • If vesting sacristy isn’t open, get key from the box in the usher’s closet. The code is 524 (start from the bottom dial). The key will also open the working sacristy • Check to see if there is a baptism • Confirm the three main doors to church have been opened by the ushers • Light fireplace when outside temperature is below 42 degrees. (Black switch on Wall) • Light any seasonal candles in the commons (November and ) • Greet all Liturgical Ministers and facilitate their sign in process as needed

Set Up – Table: • Set up the gifts table in the church as soon as possible so everyone can see the gifts as they arrive for mass. • Fill the 5” flagon with 1/2 chalice worth of wine in it and place it on the gifts table. • Place some hosts for Communion, one large host, and any “Low Gluten Host” pyx in the Presider Ciborium and place it on the gifts table. • Place the tabernacle key with the “Franciscan Cross” keychain in the tabernacle. The door to the tabernacle should remain closed until the large ciborium is taken out for Communion. You may check the number of consecrated host in the ciborium to determine the amount of reserve hosts you will have during mass. Communion from the tabernacle is generally not to be used except in the case when ministers have “run out” or if there is an excess amount of hosts. The amount of hosts in the ciborium can be determined as follows: 250 hosts fill the ciborium to the top of the ridge on the inside of the ciborium, 500 hosts will fill the ciborium to within 3/4” of the top rim, and 650 hosts is completely full. We would like to maintain 250 to 300 hosts in the ciborium after each mass. • Extra hosts are stored in the candle room in the working sacristy along with a few open boxes of wine. Additional boxes of wine are stored in the vesting sacristy closet.

Set Up - Church: • Turn ON lights (switch on wall to right inside church near back corner) There is an ON switch to press which will illuminate the lights. (OFF switch as well) • Check to see that the Eucharistic Chapel doors are open. • Light 4 torches or any candles that are on the altar with the snuffers located in the working sacristy in the candle room. Light the Paschal Candle when appropriate: i.e. during the Easter season and during any baptism, confirmation, or other celebrating Christian Initiation. • If there is a concelebrate, an additional priest helping with the mass, take the stool on the ambo side and move it over and place a chair from the next to the Presider’s chair. • 2 Brass snuffers are located in the candle room (left side closet on the back wall of Working Sacristy) hanging on hooks on the right side. If the wick needs to be replaced, please do so. The long white box containing them is located on the second shelf on the right side in the candle room. • Check the Book of the Gospels and ensure it is set for the correct reading and day. You can find that out by looking in the workbook that the lectors use that is on the counter to the left when you walk in the sign in room. Place on oak table in the commons. The worship aids also have the reading posted and can be used to determine the correct readings for the mass. St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Training Manual for Master of Ceremony

Section 3 2018 Edition

Set Up – Credence Tables:

Fill with wine based on the chart listed below.

• Fill chalices outside of box to prevent wine spills inside box.

• Fill chalices with varying amounts of wine based on your masses needs. (3 to 4 oz.)

• Place chalices with more wine in them at the front of the box for the credence table EMs.

• Make sure the chalices slide in and out of the box easily. Note: The bases of the chalices are different sizes and the ones with larger bases do not fit in all of the spaces of the box.

Fill ciboria with hosts based on the chart listed below.

• The Presider’s ciborium, which is placed on the gifts table, is not included in the number of ciboria.

• Place an amount of hosts in the ciboria equal to the number of parishioners who normally receive Communion at your mass. The individual bags of hosts contain 250 hosts. The Presider’s ciborium may have a larger amount of hosts and contains any pyx with the low gluten hosts.

• The goal is to provide everyone at the mass with a host consecrated at the mass they are attending. You will need to make any final adjustments to the number of hosts at the beginning of mass.

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Training Manual for Master of Ceremony Section 3 2018 Edition

Procedures Before Mass: • Greet all ministers and facilitate sign-in for all EM stations and Liturgical Ministries.

• Make sure that each EM knows where his/her station is for Communion. (If is present, he will always have the Presider Chalice and will serve in a regular chalice position.)

• Encourage EM’s to greet people at the large church doors and hand out worship aids.

• Recruit ministers to sign up for the credence table and to help with clean up. Review procedures with Eucharistic Ministers.

• Assign one EM “Eucharistic Bread position” to distribute communion to the choir/musicians. Choose one of the Eucharistic Bread positions from the Ambo side. Instruct the EM you have chosen to return to the Altar after completing their section, as usual. The MC will make sure this person has enough hosts to distribute to the choir/musicians before having them move into position next to the column.

Low Gluten Hosts: Pyx for low-gluten hosts will be kept in the top right drawer in the ministry sign-in room. All low-gluten hosts will be kept in the top right drawer in the vesting sacristy. Before putting a low-gluten host in the pyx, please use hand sanitizing wipes in ministry room to accommodate those with severe allergies. Note: MC will take pyx out as requested and instruct the person requesting a low-gluten host to return the pyx to the drawer after mass. Before the start of mass, fill all requested pyx with hosts and place them in the presider's ciborium on the gifts table.

• Communicate with Altar Servers. Ask them if they have any questions about the mass procedures. Find out how long they have been serving and let the Presider know if they are new. Let the servers know where you will be sitting in the church if they have any questions during mass. We want them looking to you for assistance.

• Facilitate the sign in process making sure all ministers have arrived and signed in.

• When all stations have been filled, turn the "red" card to "green” on the wall outside the door of the sign-in room.

• Assist with Gathering Procession - Procession is to begin at the start of the Gathering song. Leave three pews between each group/person(s) walking towards the Altar. Order of Procession: Thurifer (if present), Cross Bearer, Altar Servers, Lectors (& CLOW leader), Deacon (if present), Presider).

Final adjustment to the ciboria: • To gauge how many unconsecrated hosts to place in the ciboria, observe how full the church is and use average weekend attendance for your mass. The MC should make any adjustments right before or just after the gathering procession so they can move to their seat while everyone is standing. (Add a small number of hosts to your totals for people arriving after mass starts.)

• The church holds approximately 1,200 people when completely filled to capacity. During normal masses, each of the 2 side areas holds approximately 300 people. The main section of the church holds approximately 400 for a total of 1,000. Any unused hosts from a bag should be placed in the plastic container, which is located in the drawer with the bags of hosts for use at subsequent masses.

Reminder: Make any final adjustments to the number of ciboria / chalices on credence table if any stations had to be closed. Please try to keep all stations open if possible. Make sure to let the ushers know if you close any stations.

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Training Manual for Master of Ceremony Section 4 2018 Edition

Procedures during Mass: • Reserved seating for MC’s is located near the ambo in the first row. At least one MC should sit here to help coordinate the mass. Any other MC’s may sit on the first row near the baptismal font.

• CLOW – 9:30 Make sure Presider calls the children forward after the Opening Prayer and Gloria.

• RCIA- 9:30 mass If your mass has an RCIA procession during mass, watch the Presider to make sure he calls them forward after the homily.

• Baptisms will take place immediately after the homily or the RCIA procession if one is scheduled. Look to make sure the family is ready for the baptism and is in their pew. Make sure the parents have a baptismal towel and keepsake towel (embroidered cross), to receive their child after coming out of the baptismal font.

• The family bringing up the gifts should move to the rear of the church during the Prayers of the Faithful / .

• After the Prayers of the Faithful, the altar servers place the altar cloth on the altar. The 4 Credence Table EM’s and 2 MC's move to the Credence Tables.

• 2 EM’s take the boxes of wine to the bottom of the stairs on either side of the altar and pause until the altar servers have finished placing the cloth. They then walk up the steps and place their box of wine on the altar near the back side of the altar. They remove the chalices from the boxes and place them toward the front side of the altar inside the squares on the cloth. Once both EM’s have finished placing the chalices, they take the boxes back to the credence tables and return to their seats.

• One MC (on ambo side) and remaining EM’s will bring the purificators and ciboria to the altar. The purificators should always be positioned alongside the chalices so that the EM’s do not have to reach over the chalices to get a purificator.

• The 2 EM’s with the bread trays walk up to the altar and hold the trays next to the side of altar. The MC removes the ciboria from the trays and places them on the altar. The EM’s stay at the altar until both trays have been emptied and then, at the same time, return the trays to the credence tables and return to their seats.

• The MC makes any final adjustments to the chalices or ciboria so there is room for the altar servers to place the Roman Missal, Presider Chalice and water cruet on the altar and returns to his/her seat.

• The other MC (on baptism side) should confirm that the baptism side altar server moves to bring up the lavabo bowl and towel after placing the gifts on the altar. The ambo side server should stay near the altar to remove the flagon once the wine is poured into the Presider Chalice.

• At the conclusion of the “Sign of Peace”, the Credence Table EM’s will line up near the side pews to receive Communion from the priest. The MCs and other EM’s will line up near the front pews. The altar server should remove the Roman Missal from the altar.

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Training Manual for Master of Ceremony Section 4 2018 Edition

• After the “Sign of Peace,” the MC’s stand in the center of the main aisle in order to receive Communion first. After receiving communion, one MC will go to the tabernacle to retrieve the large ciborium with the reserve hosts. Please be sure to genuflect. (Leave the tabernacle door open with the key in the lock.)

• Place the large ciborium on the altar and remove the lid as the EM’s are receiving communion. The other MC will retrieve the two small ciboria from the Ambo Side Credence Table.

• Place hosts into the two ciboria so they are ready to take to the EMs if needed. The ciborium should remain in the center of the altar to prevent hosts from falling to the floor.

Procedure for replenishing hosts • Stand behind the altar and just off to the side to watch for stations that may need more hosts.

• The faithful are to receive the Eucharist that was consecrated at the mass they are attending. Exchange ciboria only when an EM signals that more bread is needed (5 hosts remaining).

• When exchanging ciboria, take the ciborium from the EM first and then hand them your ciborium.

• Do not pour hosts from their ciborium into the new ciborium.

• Return to the altar and place more hosts in the ciborium you have just taken from the EM. You will use this ciborium for the next EM who runs low on hosts.

• After Communion, consolidate hosts back into the large ciborium on the altar. Ask EM’s to take the Presider’s Ciborium, the ciboria used for replenishing hosts, and the extra purificator. DO NOT STACK ANY OF THE CIBORIA UNTIL AFTER THEY HAVE BEEN RINSED AND PURIFIED.

• One MC should check to see if the members of the choir or other musicians have received Communion and provide the EM assigned to serve communion to the music ministry 3 - 6 hosts. The large ciborium will be returned to the tabernacle prior to the music ministry receiving Communion.

• One EM will be needed to stay behind and distribute wine to the music ministry.

Procession Candle • The Procession Candle should be lit when the MC retrieves the two ciboria from the Ambo Side Credence Table.

• Near the end of Communion, one MC will retrieve the Processional Candle and wait until the last parishioners have received Communion before walking to the front steps of the altar.

• The MC will face the altar holding the candle with both hands and wait for the other MC to finish closing the large ciborium. The candle does not have to be elevated during the walk to the front steps or while waiting in front.

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Training Manual for Master of Ceremony Section 4 2018 Edition

Once the consecrated hosts have been returned and the lid is placed on the ciborium, the MC carrying the candle will turn around and start walking up the center aisle at a normal walking speed (NOT slow) to the tabernacle. The MC carrying the ciborium should follow the MC carrying the candle and place the ciborium in the tabernacle. Please be sure to genuflect.

• The Processional Candle AND ciborium should be carried at about chest/neck level as the MCs walk to the tabernacle. Once the ciborium is place in the tabernacle, the key is removed and the candle is extinguished and returned to the back ledge of the Ambo Side Credence Table.

• Return to your seats for the conclusion of Mass. Do Not begin the purification process until after the procession has exited the church.

• The Processional Candle should be moved back to the working sacristy counter after the 5:30 Sunday mass.

Procedures after Mass:

COLLECTIONS: At the conclusion of Mass, the MC designated for deposit handling, will move to the front of the altar and meet the designated usher. The two will bring the collection basket(s) to the vesting sacristy and place it in the numbered deposit bag(s). Please record the deposit bag number on usher log and in dual control place the deposit bag into the safe. (Any damaged or faulty bags should be placed into the safe at the same time.) Second collections shall be brought to the altar in a second gift basket along with the first collection. Place second collections in a separate deposit bag.

• Take the chalices and ciboria to the working sacristy to be purified and put away. The water cruet and flagon should also be cleaned and stored in the cabinets. The Processional candle belongs in the working sacristy on the counter under the right window.

• Purify the chalices by placing a small amount of water in them. “Roll” the water around the inside of the vessel to catch any remaining Precious Blood and pour it into the sacrarium. (Note: only small traces of Precious Blood should remain in the chalices- EM’s should consume any left over wine before they leave the Credence Table following Communion.) Once the chalices have been purified, you may then wash them with soap and water, dry them, and place them in the cabinets.

• Purify the ciboria by rinsing them out with water and pouring it down the sacrarium. Once that has been done, you may then clean them with soap and water, dry them, and place them back in the cabinets.

• Place all purificators, hand towels, and baptismal towels into appropriate baskets.

• Return Sacred and candle holder/follower to cabinet.

The Paschal Candle should be lit during the Easter Season, Pentecost Sunday, Confirmation, and at all Baptisms. Information about specialty masses or changes to normal procedures can be found in the MC Instruction binder on the counter in the Vesting Sacristy. We do not light the Paschal candle during lent.

• Cloth room- right side closet on back wall of Working Sacristy; Candle room- left side. Flower room is located in middle of hallway between Music room and Working Sacristy, (where any wedding flowers or wood stands used are to be put)

• Lighters are located in the cabinet in the Working Sacristy where the extra charcoal and are stored.

• When SPRINKLING is required you will need: 3 brass buckets and 3 aspergilla on the back ledge of the baptismal font. Ask two people (1 woman and 1 man) to help the Presider sprinkle. There are instruction sheets in the top left drawer in the sign in ministry room or on top of counter next to sign in book. Review sheets with volunteers if they are unsure about the procedures. Instruct the persons sprinkling to return the excess water to the font and take back to ledge beside credence table next to altar cloth.

• If thurifer is present, please help him/her in lighting the charcoal at least 15 minutes before the start of mass. Incense, , and charcoal with lighter are located in the bathroom of the Vesting Sacristy. Extra charcoal and incense can be found in the far right upper cabinet on the left wall of the Working Sacristy. Make sure that the lid on the charcoal container is always closed when finished removing charcoal.

• Check the mass notes for the season we are in and observe the color the Presider is to wear. If you notice the Presider is wearing the wrong color you should bring it to his attention.

REMEMBER TO TURN OFF THE BAPTISMAL FONT REMEMBER TO ROLL UP THE ALTAR CLOTH AFTER EACH MASS AND PLACE IT ON THE LEDGE NEXT TO THE CREDENCE TABLE ON THE BAPTISMAL SIDE St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Training Manual for Master of Ceremony Section 6 2018 Edition

BAPTISMAL FONT INSTRUCTIONS Baptismal Font: The baptismal font consists of an upper and lower section. Heated water flows into the upper font through a hole in the center of the font when the valve is opened. The upper font must fill completely before water flows down into the lower font. Water drains from both fonts through a small outlet hole in each of the fonts. There is no recirculation of the water used in the font.

When filling the fonts, you must first place the circular piece of rubber over the outlet hole in the upper font to restrict water from draining from the upper font (Do not cover the supply hole in the center). Next, install the section of pipe in the lower font to prevent water from draining until the water level reaches the top of the pipe. Both fonts will hold their water levels when the supply valve is turned off between masses. After Mass, the section of pipe and rubber cap must be removed to allow the font to drain completely. Hint: Use the section of pipe to push the rubber cap away from the hole to drain upper font.

The top font is used for baptisms of infants and the lower font is used for children and who walk down into the font.

The baptismal font is turned on only for Masses with Christian Initiation Rites (i.e. Baptism, 1st Eucharist, & Confirmation).

The controls for the font are located in the wall cabinet across from the working sacristy.

Note: The flow of water into the font must remain high enough to maintain the proper operation of the mixing valve with hot and cold water. Running the font at too low a level will cause the hot side of the mixing valve to shut off and allow only cold water to enter the font. Always check the temperature gauge to make sure reading stays in the range around the green/red dividing line on the gauge. Use your hand to test the water to confirm it is at the proper temperature for a baptism.

PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH THE TEMPERATURE KNOB across from the working sacristy BIG KNOB AT THE BOTTOM

Instructions for Baptismal Font: Before Mass: place the rubber cap in the upper font and pipe in the lower font to restrict the flow through the drains and turn the handle down full to allow water to flow into the top font.

Check after a few minutes to make sure the water is warm and the upper font is full and then turn the handle up to a 45-degree angle (Red line).

After Mass, raise the handle up to shut the water off and remove the rubber cap and pipe over the drains. The font should be drained after the Saturday mass or after the last baptism that takes place during the Sunday masses. The font should be turned off and left full of water when there is a second baptism after the conclusion of your mass on Sunday.

Special Masses: Follow instructions for Mass listed in MC instruction Binder.

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Training Manual for Master of Ceremony Section 6 2018 Edition

Set Up for Baptism:

Working Sacristy: Confirm the door handle has been unlocked (knob on door handle) to prevent a family member from accidently locking the working sacristy during mass. Place one medium size towel (located in upper left wall cabinet) on the counter for each family to use as a changing station. Place a second medium size towel on the counter for drying infants if they are immersed in the font. The towel can be placed on the stool at the font if the parents have a blanket they would like to use before the baptism. The towel is not required if the infant will remain clothed and have water poured on their head.

Church Setup: Turn the Font ON. Place rubber stopper and pipe over outlet holes. Check water temperature with your hand and adjust flow before mass begins. Place Reserve Signs on pews. Reserve two rows for each family in section (A). All families should be seated in section (A) near font. Parents and Godparents should sit near center aisle. Place a stool near font (back, right corner near steps). The stool should be used to hold any items needed at the font. Do not place items on ledge of upper font. Place one keepsake towel for each baptism on stool at font. Place any medium sized towels on stool as needed (See note above). Place gold shell on stool. Light Paschal Candle (Note: Paschal Candle should already be placed in the lower stand in front of the font near steps). Place wood stand in front of font with a purificator as a table cloth. Place glass jar with sacred chrism oil (SC)* on the wood stand. Remove lid from jar and leave in cabinet (to prevent breaking). Place small hand towel on wood stand for the presider to wipe hands. Place one baptismal candle on wood stand for each baptism. Please open candle box on wick side.

* The Sacred Chrism is found in the , located on the right hand side of the rear of the church, near the Eucharistic Chapel. The key for the Ambry is located in the Vesting Sacristy, upper middle cabinet along the right wall.)

Meet with Parents: • Meet with parents, ask if they have any questions, and make them comfortable with the procedures.

• The parents have a choice of a purple T-shirt (kept in the drawers under the counter used for the changing table) or a swim diaper if their child will be immersed in the font. The family is to keep their white baptismal garment with them.

• Inform the parents that an usher will be down to ask members of their family to bring up the gifts One family member may be asked if there are multiple baptisms. The usher will meet with them to give them instructions.

• Remind the family that they should only take pictures from their seats during the baptism.

Remind the Parents and Godparents to meet in commons for the Gathering Procession.

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Training Manual for Master of Ceremony Section 6 2018 Edition

The Sacrament of Baptism takes place in our church either during our regular mass or at a community baptism (a separate ceremony usually held once a month on Saturday consisting of multiple families). Baptism during mass take place one weekend per month with up to three families scheduled at a single mass.

The MC mass notes will tell you if there is a baptism(s) scheduled for that weekend. The schedule for baptisms is located on the counter in the vesting sacristy. This is where you will find the white sheets of paper containing the script for the baptism the Presider uses.

Rite of Baptism for Several Children at Sunday Mass

RECEPTION OF THE CHILDREN At the doors of the church: the celebrant greets all present, and especially the parents and godparents, reminding them briefly of the joy with which the parents welcomed this child as a gift from God, the source of life, who now wishes to bestow his own life on these little ones.

Priest: In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit+

RENUNCIATION OF SIN AND PROFESSION OF FAITH (following homily) The presider moves in front of the baptismal candidates and invites the assembly to stand:

Priest: Dear parents and godparents: You have come here to present these children for baptism. By water and the Holy Spirit they are to receive the gift of new life from God, who is love.

On your part, you must make it your constant care to bring them up in the practice of the faith. See that the divine life which God gives them is kept safe from the poison of sin, to grow always stronger in their hearts.

If your faith makes you ready to accept this responsibility, renew now the vows of your own baptism. Reject sin; profess your faith in Christ Jesus. This is the faith of the Church. This is the faith in which these children are about to be baptized.

In these or similar words: And now in solidarity let us all express our faith.

Priest: Do you reject Satan, and all his works, and all his empty promises.

All: I do.

Priest: Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth?

All: I do.

Priest: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died, and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father?

All: I do.

Priest: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting?

All: I do

Priest: This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church. We are proud to profess it, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

All: Amen.

LITANY OF THE SAINTS As the presider moves to the font the choir sings the Litany of the Saints

BLESSING OF WATER In these or similar words Priest: My dear brothers and sisters, we now ask God to give these children (this child) new life in abundance through water and the Holy Spirit

The celebrant touches the water with his right hand and continues.

Priest: Lord, make holy this water which you have created, so that all those whom you have chosen may be born again by the power of the Holy Spirit and may take their place among your holy people.

All: Acclamation (!)

Baptism Using the name of the individual child, the priest questions the parents and godparents. Priest: Is it your will that N. should be baptized in the faith of the Church, which we have all professed with you?

Baptizing the child, the priest says: Priest: N., I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

All: Amen

Explanatory Rites: Anointing After Baptism Priest: The God of power and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has freed you from sin and brought you to new life through water and the Holy Spirit.

He now anoints you with this chrism of salvation, so that, united with his people, you may remain for ever a member of Christ who is Priest, Prophet and King.

All: Amen

The presider anoints each child on the head with chrism, saying these or similar words: I anoint you priest, prophet, and king

Explanatory Rites: Clothing with White Garment Priest: N. and N., you have become a new creation, and have clothed yourselves in Christ. See in this white garment the outward sign of your Christian dignity. With your family and friends to help you by word and example, bring that dignity unstained into the everlasting life of heaven.

The white garments are either put on the children or shown. The presider touches the garment saying these or similar words: You have become a new creation.

Explanatory Rites: Lighted Candle The priest lights each candle as presented by the Godparent and hands back to them, the Godparent then returns to the pew. As he presents the candle he says: Priest: Receive the light of Christ.

After all Godparents have returned to their pews he says: Priest: Parents and godparents, this light is entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly. These children of yours have been enlightened by Christ. They are to walk always as children of the light. May they keep the flame of faith alive in their hearts. When the Lord comes, may they go out to meet him with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom.

You may take someone else's place only if he/she is not there 10 minutes before the liturgy is to begin. If you cannot keep your assignment, it is your responsibility to get a substitute. Updated schedules and extra copies of the guidelines are available in the ministry room. The two server positions are identified by the side they sit on (ambo/baptistery). The server on the Ambo (music) side assists with the Roman Missal and presider's binder. The server on the Baptistery side assists with the Altar cloth, water cruet, chalice, purificator, and lavabo set (hand washing bowl & towel). Carry a worship aid during the processional and recessional and sing and pray during the liturgy. In the opening procession, the Altar Servers follow immediately behind the Cross Bearer. “Sunday" clothes and shoes are appropriate for serving. Cross Bearer Training Manual

Instructions for Carrying the Cross

Being a Cross Bearer is an excellent way to share your time and talent with this community and play a very important role in the Mass.

The Cross is to remain in the stand near the Altar at all times until being used in the Gathering Procession. The stand in the vesting sacristy can be used to hold the cross for short periods before or after mass as needed.

Procedure for Gathering Processional & Sending:

Please arrive 20 minutes before mass and sign in.

• About 5 minutes before Mass starts, walk down the center aisle of the church, stop at the steps, bow and then proceed up the steps to pick up the cross. Walk back up the aisle with the cross and then stand to the side (near the Presider and Altar Servers) until Mass is about to begin.

• The Cross Bearer leads the procession (unless there is incense). The Master of Ceremonies will direct the Cross Bearer when to start walking. Walk slowly down the center aisle and proceed up the steps, place the cross in the stand with the crucifix facing the congregation, walk back down the steps and stand between the Presider and the Altar Server. Then bow when the Presider bows and proceed to your seat. The Cross Bearer should sit on the side where the baptismal font is located so that you can easily retrieve the cross at the end of mass.

• At the end of Mass, the Presider stands to give the final blessing. When the Presider and Altar Servers start towards the altar, the Cross Bearer walks up the side steps by the baptismal font, picks up the cross, walks down the middle steps and stands between the Presider and the Altar Server. The Presider will bow and the Cross Bearer should simply bow his/her head, turn and proceed up the main aisle leading the sending procession at a normal walking pace.

• Wait a few minutes in the commons until most of the people in the church leave and return the cross to the stand on the altar using the center aisle. Bow at the base of the steps as you are leaving the altar.

• The two credence table EMs responsible for bringing the chalices of wine to the altar should move to the credence table after Prayers of the Faithful. When the altar servers are placing the altar cloth on the Altar, the two EMs take the wine to the bottom of the stairs on either side of the altar and pause until the cloth is set and the servers have moved away from the altar. The EMs should walk up the steps and place their box of wine on the altar near the back side of the altar. The EM’s will remove the chalices from the boxes and place them toward the front side of the altar. The altar cloth has a square pattern that can be used for proper spacing of the chalices by placing a chalice in each square. EMs should only move one chalice of wine at a time. Handle the chalices in the middle section of the chalice below the rim. Once both EMs have finished placing the chalices, they move together to take the boxes back to the credence tables and return to their seats.

After the two EM’s remove the wine boxes and walk down the steps, the MC will place the purificators next to the chalices with one stack of purificators on each side. The two EM’s with the ciboria trays walk up to the altar and hold the trays next to the side of altar. The trays should not be held over the altar or place on the altar. The MC will remove the ciboria from the trays and place them on the altar. The EMs stay at the altar until both trays have been emptied and then return the trays to the credence tables. Please do not walk up the front steps between the credence table EMs. The Presider chalice will be used to distribute the Precious Blood to the assembly. Any chalice minister may select the Presider Chalice from the altar for distribution IF a deacon is not present.

• As you walk down the altar steps to your station, cover the chalice with the purificator or cover the ciborium of consecrated hosts with your hand to avoid any spilling.

Distributing Communion • When all EMs have received communion, the ushers in the center aisle will signal the assembly at the center of the church to begin processing forward. When the remaining EMs arrive at their stations, the ushers will signal the assembly to proceed to the remaining locations in the church.

• The communicant approaches the EM and bows his/her head in reverence. The EM reverently presents the Eucharistic Bread as he/she says, "The Body of Christ." The communicant responds, "Amen." Take special care in presenting the host to children. Some communicants may want to receive the Eucharist on the tongue. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are to be reminded not to use language other than, “the Body of Christ” and not to elevate the host.

• If you or the communicant drops a host on the floor, pick it up and place it in your hand under the ciborium and continue. Consume the host during a break in the distribution or when you return to the credence table.

• The Eucharistic Bread ministers, who may need more hosts, should raise their hand and/or turn around to locate the Master of Ceremony(s) who will have reserve hosts to replenish their ciboria. The reserve hosts should only to be called for once you are down to five hosts remaining in your ciborium. The MC will bring a new ciborium filled with reserve hosts to exchange with you. Hand the MC your ciborium and then take the new ciborium. Do not pour the remaining host from your existing ciborium into the new ciborium. The MC will take your ciborium and remaining hosts back to the altar.

• After the assembly has received Communion, EMs with chalices are to go to the credence table, offer any remaining Precious Blood to each other until all has been consumed, and return the chalice to the wooden boxes. The EMs with ciboria will put their remaining hosts into the large ciborium on the altar and bring their empty ciborium back to the credence table. DO NOT STACK ANY CIBORIA UNTIL THEY HAVE BEEN RINSED AND PURIFIED. Any EM may help consume the remaining Precious Blood at the credence table.

• EMs may be asked to distribute communion to the disabled or elderly in the assembly. The ushers will ask you to leave your station when all the people in your section have received communion.

• The EM responsible for distributing communion to the remaining musicians should first return to the altar to place extra hosts in the ciborium. The MC will assist the EM with the number of hosts needed for the musicians. Any extra hosts remaining after the musicians are served, may be offered to the musicians or another Eucharistic Minister. Please do not self-communicate. One EM will be needed to help the MC serve the chalice to the remaining musicians. The EMs stand near the column next to the ambo credence table to serve the musicians.

• EMs serving the side pews should not help serve in the front of the assembly when their sections have finished unless a position has been vacated.

Greet and Acknowledge Children or Adults Who Do Not Receive Communion

• Many children not old enough to receive communion, adults in RCIA, or adults who choose not to receive, welcome a special greeting from the EM distributing the consecrated hosts. These people will approach the station with their arms crossed.

• You may place your hand upon the shoulder of the individual and offer them a prayer with simple words such as “May God bless you” or “Peace be with you”. There is to be no blessing using the sign of the cross or placing your hand on their head.

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Training Manual for Master of Ceremony

Section 11 2018 Edition

Serving the Chalice

• While it is encouraged for the full expression of Christ's Eucharistic presence, not all communicants will receive the chalice.

• The communicant approaches the EM holding the chalice and bows his/her head in reverence. The chalice is presented reverently while saying "The Blood of Christ." The communicant responds "Amen." It is preferred that the communicant take the chalice in his/her own two hands. Take special care in giving the chalice to children. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are to be reminded not to use language other than, “the Blood of Christ” and not to elevate the chalice.

• Open the purificator completely. When the chalice is returned, wipe the rim inside and out with the purificator and rotate the chalice one-quarter turn for the next person. If you drop your purificator on the floor, please ask the MC to replace it with a clean one.

• If the Precious Blood spills, use the purificator to wipe up the spill if it is small. Leave the purificator over the spot of a larger spill and close the station by returning your chalice to the credence table. If your purificator does not cover the entire spill, ask a parishioner in your line to make sure no one walks in it and retrieve the extra purificator from the Altar. After the Liturgy, return to the station to clean the area with water and purificators.

• When all of the Precious Blood in the chalice is consumed, return your chalice to the credence table and then return to your seat in the church. DO NOT remain in your EM position.

• When Communion is over, take your chalice back to the credence table and offer the remainder of your wine to another Eucharistic Minister. Then return to your seat in the church. Please do not self-communicate.

At the Conclusion of Communion

• Return to your place in the assembly as soon as possible. Do NOT proceed to the sacristy to purify the vessels until after the presider has processed out of church.

• Immediately after communion, the Master of Ceremonies will remove the large ciborium from the altar and place it in the tabernacle.

Low Gluten Host Procedures

So that all the faithful may partake of the Body of Christ during Mass, we have a supply of low gluten Eucharistic Bread, which is made from wheat starch and water. The gluten content is 0.01% and is made, stored, and shipped in a dedicated gluten-free environment. These special hosts are made according to the requirements of both the Code of Canon Law (c.924) and may be validly used at Mass in the Dioceses of the United States.

If parishioners request the low gluten host please direct them to the MC and the MC will help them.

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Training Manual for Master of Ceremony Section 11 2018 Edition

After Mass

• Help the Master of Ceremonies clear the credence tables by taking the chalices & ciboria to the working sacristy after the Mass is over. Two or three ministers should stay after Mass to assist the MC(s) in the working sacristy in the purification and cleaning of the ciboria, chalices, , etc.

• The wooden boxes with the chalices should be placed to the left of the sink to be purified by one of the Friars. MCs will wait a reasonable amount of time for a Friar to arrive before purifying the chalices themselves and removing them from the boxes to be washed and stored. All ciboria, cruets, and the flagon should also be washed and stored.

• No ciboria should be stacked until they have been purified and rinsed.

• Put the wooden boxes and trays in their designated storage area on the counter. The boxes should not be washed. All soiled purificators should be placed in the basket in the lower right cabinet to be laundered.

• EMs should help collect worship aids from the ends of the pews and place them in the baskets for the next Mass.

REMINDERS

• Only trained Extraordinary Ministers may serve at liturgies. Name tags for those who are no longer active will be removed from the Ministry Room.

• Inactive members may be reactivated at any time by filling out a new registration form and completing retraining if necessary.

• Please direct anyone requesting low-gluten hosts to the MC.

• Please handle all vessels with reverence throughout the purification process.

• Allow each person to respond with "Amen" before giving them a host, and make sure that they are consuming it.

Lector Training Manual

Checklist

• Lectors are expected to review the scriptures in advance of the mass. It is generally recommended that each Lector prepare both readings to allow them to “step-in” in the unlikely event one Lector is unable to serve at the Mass due to a last minute or emergency situation.

• Dress in a respectful manner reflecting the dignity and sacred nature of the scripture you are to proclaim. As a general guideline, Lectors should dress slightly more formal than the congregation but formal attire is not required.

• Arrive to the Church at least 20 minutes before the Mass. Sign in. Check to see that the other Lector is present and help the Master of Ceremonies find a “fill-in” Lector, or consider volunteering to proclaim both readings, if necessary.

• If a prayerful sharing session will be done at that Mass, decide which of the two Lectors will lead the discussion. Such a session will be a brief reflection on the readings for the Mass and an opportunity for any of the ministers serving in the Mass to join in prayer for each other, the congregation, or any loved ones in need. The Lector should provide the basis for the prayer based on the sacred Scriptures prepared for the Mass.

• Gathering Procession - The Lector (first reading) carries the Book of Gospels (red book) in the procession. The New Testament Lector walks in procession alongside the Old Testament Lector. The order of the procession is (1) Cross Bearer, (2) Altar Servers, (3) Lectors, (4) Presider. The Lector places the Book of the Gospels in the center of the altar, flat, in the closed position and walks down to the steps to stand with the Presider to bow to the altar together with the Presider and servers as led by the Presider. The Lectors then proceed to their seats. Note: If Deacon is present, he walks in immediately before the presider and carries the Book of Gospels.

• First Reading - After the opening prayer, the First Reading is proclaimed, usually from the Old Testament. Pause two seconds after the reading and say “The Word of the Lord”. Then, step back from the ambo, cross your hands as in prayer and wait approximately 10-15 seconds to allow the assembly to reflect on the reading, and proceed to your seat.

• Second Reading - After the has sung the psalm and prepared to leave the ambo, the Lector approaches the ambo and reads the second reading. At the end of the reading, pause approximately two seconds before you say “The Word of the Lord”.. Then, step back from the ambo, cross your hands as in prayer and wait approximately 10-15 seconds to allow the assembly to reflect on the reading. Next, close the Lectionary and place it on the shelf in the ambo and proceed to your seat.

• The Prayers of the Faithful - After the Homily, there may be a baptism or the RCIA candidates may be dismissed. The Presider will stand and lead the assembly in the Creed. At the beginning of the final paragraph…”I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic church.” (when ) … the New Testament Lector should begin walking up to the ambo. At the conclusion of the Creed the Presider will say a few words to introduce the Prayers of the Faithful. Upon finishing reading the Prayers of the Faithful, the lector should remain at the ambo, facing the Presider, until the end of the Presider’s prayer. Lectors should familiarize themselves with the Prayers of the Faithful in advance of the Mass (typically emailed on Friday before the Mass). If there are any names in the Prayers that are unfamiliar, Lectors should ask the Liturgy Staff or the Presider about the proper pronunciation of the name. When specific individuals are mentioned in the Prayers of the Faithful, announce them carefully with clear and slow intonation to make certain the assembly is aware of the person for whom they are praying. Lectors

St. Francis Lectors are prepared readers who proclaim the Word of God at weekend, Holy Day, and special liturgies. Lectors read the first reading (usually Old Testament), second reading (New Testament), and the Prayers of the Faithful. Lector Training Purpose: To proclaim the Word of God and to bring to life the message of Christ to the assembly.

The Lector Ministry: When you answer the call to be a minister of the Word, you enter into a deeper relationship with the Word of God as revealed in sacred scripture. You take upon yourself the duty and privilege of bringing the printed Word to life —- making it fresh, so to speak. Your ministry as Lector gives voice to God’s healing and strengthening Word as it goes forth irrevocably to the ends of the earth, achieving the purpose of which God sent it.

The Role of the Lector: Your role as Lector is a ministry. Ministry is service to God’s people. This role is not a cause for pride in your ability or an opportunity to “shine.” It is a cause for humility because God, through God’s church, has called you to speak in God’s name, proclaiming God’s truth and story. In reading the scriptures, the Lector should have the goal of communicating God’s Word to His people. This means that the Lector’s posture, tone, and appearance should express the dignity of the Word, and should help the faithful to focus on the Word itself, rather than on the lector’s movements or gestures. Of principle importance is the way in which the Lector makes use of his/her voice in the proclamation of the Word.

The General Introduction to the Lectionary gives a few simple criteria:

• A speaking on the part of the readers that is audible, clear, and intelligent is the first means of transmitting the Word of God properly to the assembly.

• The best use of inflection, pause, projection, phrasing, emotion, articulation, parsing and pace require careful preparation and training. In applying these techniques of proclamation, however, the lector should remember his basic task of presenting the Word of God. Thus, a style of reading that would present simply dull recitation of words should be avoided, as should a style that would turn the reading of scripture into a dramatic act.

Additionally, Lectors at St. Francis should consider that:

• The role is to proclaim, not just read, the Word, yet to do so without exceptional or unnecessary “performance.” Thus, the Lector should endeavor to bring the message of the reading to the hearts and minds of the congregation, as intended by the author of the passage.

• It is generally the case that proclamations should be slower rather than faster, unless the message and style of the reading suggest a faster pace. When in doubt, it is better to err in the direction of a slower pace so as to provide the greatest chance for the congregation to hear, understand, and internalize the Word.

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Training Manual for Master of Ceremony Section 12 2018 Edition

• Due to the large size of our , Lectors should intentionally project their voices to ensure all in attendance can hear the Word clearly. Since our ambo has a microphone, the Lector does not need to shout, but should be clear and intentional with their voice.

• Approach the reading with a holistic view of the particular Mass you are serving at. Review the other readings as part of your preparation as well as any additional descriptions or context in the Lector Workbook or other materials you may have. Bringing the Word alive is best accomplished when a given reading is proclaimed in the context of the overall story being told by the three readings together. Note if the Mass is of special significance (Feast, Solemnity, etc.), this should be taken into consideration in the preparation of the proclamation.

Schedule and Commitment: Lectors are scheduled to serve at specific liturgies, approximately every six to eight weeks, depending on the number of Lectors serving that Mass time. If a Lector is unable to fulfill his or her assignment, they must secure a substitute. Lectors should arrive early for the Mass and make sure to sign-in at least 20 minutes before the start of the Mass. Lectors should check that both readings are covered.

Lector schedules will generally be issued quarterly and, as feasible, the Lector coordinator will provide an opportunity approximately one month before the schedule is developed for Lectors to declare any weekends they are unable to serve. Lectors are scheduled to serve at the same Mass time for the entire quarter, but may change between quarters by notifying the Lector Coordinator. Lector schedules are developed to allow all Lectors the opportunity to proclaim an equal number of times to the extent possible.

In general, St. Francis attempts to have a male and female Lector at each Mass. Special Masses (ex. - Christmas, Easter) or feast Masses will not be part of the standard schedule and may be scheduled directly by the Lector Coordinator or through a special sign-up sheet emailed to the entire Lector ministry. Lectors may sign up for any Mass time in these circumstances.

The Liturgy staff will generally send out a reminder email to Lectors several days before the Mass they are scheduled for. Lectors are expected to respond to affirm that they will be able to serve as scheduled, or to notify staff who they have found as a substitute. Scheduled Lectors will receive a second reminder usually on Friday before the assigned Mass. If they fail to respond to these reminders, the staff may assign another Lector to that particular Mass.

Lectors are expected to attend at least one formation or training session each year to enhance their personal knowledge of the Word and sharpen their presentation skills.

Description of Duties: The duties of the Lector include: • Reviewing the reading in advance, taking special note of the pronunciation needs. Prepare at least one week in advance of your assigned reading by reviewing the reading in the Workbook for Lectors. For a fuller understanding of the passage refer to the Bible and read the selection in its context.

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Training Manual for Master of Ceremony Section 12 2018 Edition

Practice the reading several times before coming to church. Be sure to read it out loud to prepare the pace of the reading. Use the pronunciation guide to practice difficult names and places.

• Arriving at church at least 20 minutes prior to the start of Mass. Sign-in in the ministry room. If you are reading the first reading, set the correct page of the Lectionary at the ambo as well as the microphone position, and ensure the Red Book of the Gospels is at the table in the gathering space. Remain in the back of the church as you will process down the aisle with the Book of Gospels at the start of Mass. If you are reading the second reading, make sure the ribbon in the Lectionary at the ambo is at the proper page and review the Prayers of the Faithful. (Note: Always make sure a copy of the Prayers of the Faithful is on the ambo and always read from that copy. Last minute additions will appear on the copy at the ambo, but may not be in the copy placed in the ministry room.) • Notifying the Liturgy staff if they are unable to serve and to locate a substitute from the list of Lectors provided each quarter. Lectors are asked to respond in a timely manner to notifications/reminders from the parish staff about assigned readings.

The Gathering Procession: • The first reader stands in front of the priest caring the red Book of the Gospels. The standard order for the procession is: Cross-bearer, Altar Servers, Lector, Presider.

• The Book of Gospels should be carried in front of you, slightly above your head.

• At the altar, the Lector places the Book of Gospels in the center of the altar table, flat, and in the closed position. Leave room for the presider to be able to kiss the altar.

• The first reader walks down the steps, stands with the Cross-bearer, Altar Servers, and the Presider, bows in unison, and then sits in a pew convenient to the ambo.

The First Reading: • After the opening prayer by the Presider, the first reading is proclaimed.

• At the 11:30 a.m. Masses children may be excused for Children’s Liturgy of the Word. While the children are processing out of the church, walk to the ambo with dignity and prayerfulness. Wait a reasonable time for the children to exit before beginning to read.

• At the end of the reading, pause approximately two seconds before you say “The Word of the Lord”. Then, step back from the ambo, cross your hands as in prayer and wait approximately 10-15 seconds to allow the assembly to reflect on the reading. Next, make sure that the second reading is visible and turn the page of the Lectionary if needed. Do not move the Lectionary so that it is ready for the second Lector.

The Second Reading • After the cantor has sung the psalm and is preparing to leave the ambo, the New Testament lector should rise from the pew and begin walking to the ambo. Ideally, the cantor and the Lector will cross at the base of the stairs. The musician usually continues to play music to cover the movement of walking to the ambo. • Adjust the microphone to reflect your height.

• At the end of the reading, pause approximately two seconds before you say “The Word of the Lord”. Then, step back from the ambo, cross your hands as in prayer and wait approximately 10-15 seconds to allow the assembly to reflect on the readings. Next, close the Lectionary and place it on the shelf in the ambo.

The Prayers of the Faithful: • After the Homily, there may be a baptism or the RCIA candidates may be excused. Check with the Presider if you are not certain about special events at the Mass.

• The Presider will stand and lead the assembly in the creed. At the beginning of the final paragraph… “I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic church.” (Nicene Creed) … begin walking up to the ambo.

• At the conclusion of the creed, the Presider will say a few words to introduce the Prayers of the Faithful.

• Upon finishing reading the Prayers of the Faithful, the Lector should remain at the ambo until the end of the Presider’s prayers and then turn and respectfully return to their seat.

Section 12 2018 Edition Lector Reading Tips • Sit close to the ambo to reduce any time necessary to reach the ambo. • Approach the ambo in a prayerful and dignified manner. Be strong, certain, and relaxed. Don’t rush in your manner. Time your arrival at the ambo to assure a smooth and consistent flow of the entire Liturgy of the Word, without unnecessary pauses. • Adjust the microphone quickly so that it is at nose level. The microphone should be adjusted to a distance of approximately 10-12 inches from the mouth. • Look at the assembly and draw their attention in. Wait until they have settled down before beginning to read. • Memorize “A reading from the book of….” so you can be looking in the eyes of the assembly. • Establish and maintain eye contact with the assembly, including those on your left and right. Remember you are proclaiming the Word of God to the assembly. • Aim your voice to the back wall of the church. This makes one read with greater energy and assures proper volume in your voice. • Exaggerate your articulation, speaking slowly. This may sound awkward to you at the time, but will not seem that way to the congregation. Most people speak comfortably at a rate of approximately 200 words per minute. Just when you think you are sounding too slow and loud, the assembly will be able to hear and follow you comfortably. • Differentiate difficult consonant sounds (D’s and T’s, N’s and M’s, G’s and K’s). Move your mouth away from the microphone slightly to avoid hissing S’s and popping P’s. • The reading should not be memorized. “The medium is the Word of God as recorded in sacred scripture, and it is important that the book be involved in the liturgical proclamation. A memorized presentation will always put the reader rather than the text into the foreground, emphasizing the performance above the content.” A well trained Tongue, Page 97. • You should be enthusiastic but not overly dramatic. The emphasis should be on the reading, not the reader. • Maintain the energy or volume to the end of the sentence without dropping off. • Good readers always distinguish between narrative, dialogue, and poetic readings. They mark the difference with quality of voice, pace and deliberation. • Pause after the introduction of the reading and before the close “The Word of the Lord.” Make eye contact with the congregation during these pauses.

Attention to these details helps to create a climate and context that attracts people to listen. The entire purpose of the Lector ministry is to engage people in the living Word being spoken and heard. The Liturgy of the Word at Mass is not a time for learning a scripture lesson; it is a time to experience the life giving Word of God made alive in the sound of the human voice.

Sound System: • Microphones - There are four wireless microphones units that are used during mass. The units are stored in the charging station for the microphones which is located in the Vesting Sacristy. The four microphones are label with numbers (1 to 4) and have the Presider’s name. Let the person controlling the sound system know if you have had to make a change to a Presider’s microphone. If there is an issue with the wireless mic, make sure the switch located under the flip cover has been switched to the on position. If there is a guest Presider or concelebrant, have them use #1 through #3. #4 is typically preset to be used with a musical instrument so the gain level is reduced and will not project the spoken word as effectively.

The volume controls for the sound system are controlled from the music pit or on a remote iPad. Please let the Music Coordinator know if you feel there is an issue with the sound quality.

• Speakers in Commons - There is a control knob to adjust the speakers in the commons located on the wall to the left of the large center doors to the church.

• Power Outage or Major Sound Disruption - If there is a major sound disruption and the system needs to be turned off, there is a key on the side of the sound console in the music pit. Turn this key all the way to the left and the system will begin a power down. If there is a power outage and the sound system needs to be rebooted, turn the same key to the right and the system will go through an automatic reboot that takes about 45 seconds. The microphones in the sanctuary are all on an independent system that will always be restored to a default setting. The music system always returns to its prior setting before turned off.

HVAC System:

The thermostats that control the HVAC in the church are housed in locked boxes to prevent adjustments to the temperature controls. The systems are automatically adjusted based on the automatic programs entered into the thermostats.

• The temperature in the church is manually adjusted before some of our larger special masses to anticipate the temperature changes during mass.

Please note if your mass needed adjusting (more heat or cooling) so we can make the adjustments in the future.

Security System:

Instructions - The alarm system is turned on and off each day when the buildings are unlocked and locked.

Liturgy with the Bishop

A mass with the Bishop is celebrated in a similar way to our regular masses. Depending on the occasion for the mass, there are a few changes you will have to make to prepare for the liturgy. See the “Special Mass” section for more details about the specific mass you are serving.

The Bishop and any visiting will use the room directly adjacent to the commons (the parlor) in the corner near the main doors as their Sacristy. Greet the Bishop when he arrives and see if he has any special needs as he prepares for mass.

Corporal: A is the square white linen cloth placed under the sacred vessels during communion. The corporal can be found in the drawer of the working sacristy and should be rolled up in the altar cloth before mass. Spread the altar cloth out on the altar and position the corporal in the center and towards the back edge of the altar where the bishop will stand. Roll the altar cloth back up and place it back on the ledge near Credence Table.

Seating: • Add a chair only if another priest will be sitting with the Bishop (Confirm before mass). The Bishop will generally be sitting by himself with one altar server on each side. Other priests may be sitting in the front rows of the church and will need to have reserve signs placed on the rows. • Add stools for the altar servers. A mass with the Bishop will have four to seven altar servers depending on the mass. The additional stools can be placed off to the side near the baptismal font or behind the ledge and against the back wall in the walkway area. Chairs can be used if you run out of stools. The two stools for the regular altar servers should be left in their normal position.

Altar Servers: Usually a diocesan representative will hold an instructional meeting with the altar servers before mass to determine responsibilities and training. Make sure each of the altar servers understands their roll before mass.

• Two altar servers will perform the regular duties of the ambo and baptistery servers • One altar server will be responsible for the Bishop’s (ceremonial head-dress of bishop) and will be wearing a (a shawl worn over the altar servers shoulders to prevent direct contact with the Mitre) • One altar server will be responsible for the Bishop’s (staff carried by Bishop) and will be wearing a vimpa to prevent direct contact with the Crosier • A thurifer may be used at the mass • Two candle bearers may be used at the mass

Communion: Clarify who will be up on the altar to replenish the EM’s who need hosts and if any of your usual duties will change. The two Masters of Ceremonies may be up on the altar or stationed down near the credence tables during communion. You will still be responsible for bringing the ciborium to the altar and placing it in the Tabernacle, as well as serving the choir and cantor.

A communion plate may be used by the Bishop at some celebrations. The communion plate is held by the altar server under the hands of communicates as they receive communion. The altar server will need to bring the plate to the altar when they are bringing up the chalice and water pitcher.

Liturgy in the Chapel

The St. Mary of Angels Chapel is used for daily mass and a variety of other specialty masses such as , funerals, and small groups from other faith traditions. The chapel has a small group of dedicated sacristans who coordinate these masses each day. A Master of Ceremonies may be asked to help out with one of these masses as the number of masses in the chapel increases over time. MCs are encouraged to attend a daily mass and review the procedures with one of the sacristans.

Masses held in the chapel, although containing all of the same components of a regular mass, have a less formal appearance because of the size of the chapel. A typical daily mass will not have altar servers, a cross bearer, or ushers. For daily mass, the chapel does not utilize a schedule for other ministries and relies on volunteers to assist with the Eucharistic Minister and Lector duties.

Door Locks: • The main doors to the chapel are locked and unlocked with the rest of the campus and should be unlocked when you arrive • The key to unlock the interior doors is located in a lock box on the wall outside Sacristy down the hallway on the right (Combination is 0524)

Lighting: • The hallway and rooms of the hallway have automatic motion switches that turn on the lights in each space • The switches to turn the chapel lights on are located inside the main door of the chapel (LC-1, LC- 3, LC-5 turn the hanging chandeliers on) (LC-9 and LC-11 turn the wall sconces on) ( RC-2 controls the track lights)

Seating: • There are 112 seats in the two sections of the chapel • The benches along the walls have seating for an addition 50 to 60 people

Audio System: • Turn on the receiver using the power button on the upper right corner of the box. The box is located on the floor behind the piano. Do not adjust the volume control knobs on the receiver as they are preset • Turn the switch on for the speakers which is located on the wall of the hallway near the door to the working sacristy (Left side hallway) • The switch for the speakers and the power button for the receiver must be turned off after mass

Emergency Defibrillator: • The emergency defibrillator is located in the glass cabinets above the drinking fountains in the hallway • Call 911 in the event of an emergency and report any incidences using the same procedures for the church

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Training Manual for Master of Ceremony Section 18 2018 Edition

Setting up for Communion: • The hosts and wine is stored in the corner wall cabinet of the Sacristy • Use the tray to place a ciborium with hosts and one large host, (2) chalices filled with wine, (2) purificators, and small glass pitcher directly on the altar • Place addition chalices for additional wine stations as directed by the Presider • The ciborium with the hosts is placed in the center with a wine chalice on either side • Move the tray to the credence table behind the altar for use after communion • Place the tabernacle key in the lock for opening during mass

EM Stations: Communion Station usually consist of one bread station in the center (usually the Presider) and two wine stations (one on either side of the altar) positioned well off to the sides to allow for a good communion flow. If the Presider would like to used two bread stations, you may use the ciborium from the tabernacle to distribute hosts as we do not have two ciboria in the sacristy. If the Presider would like to add an additional wine station, add one additional chalice and purificator to the altar.

Procession: • For daily mass a cross is not used and often there is no Gathering Procession, the Presider will enter the chapel and sit at the chair until the mass begins.

Lector: • At daily mass a Lector is chosen from those in attendance. • Depending on the day, the daily mass may have only one reading and the prayers of the faithful to read. If there is a feast or solemnity, there are typically two readings.

Communion: The MC and EMs come forward and stand on either side of the altar after the “Sign of Peace”. The EMs receive communion similar to the way our credence table EMs in the church receive communion, and then they proceed to their stations. The MC receives communion and then moves to the tabernacle to take the ciborium out for communion. The ciborium will stay on the altar or be used by the MC to distribute communion. After communion, all consecrated hosts are placed in the ciborium and the ciborium is placed back in the tabernacle. All remaining wine is consumed at the credence table.

Purification / After Mass: • The ciborium and chalices are returned to the tray on the credence table after communion • At the conclusion of mass, take the tray back to the sacristy and wash them in the Sacrarium and store them on the tray along with the key to the tabernacle • Turn off lights in chapel (Other lights will turn off automatically)

Medical Presence @ Mass

Being a medical professional is a calling, not just a career. Our Medical Presence @ Mass Ministry provides orientation to the medical equipment available on campus. Whenever you come to Mass, go to the Liturgy Room beside the Usher’s Closet, sign in and get your name tag. In the event of a medical event, the ushers can easily find the medical professional nearest the event to assist in providing basic first aid. For more information, or to schedule an orientation appointment, contact Kathleen Owen at 919-847- 8205, ext. 241.

MC’s and ushers should check to see if any medical volunteers have signed in before mass. Medical volunteers sign in the “Medical Presence @ Mass” binder located on the counter in the ministry sign in room. The volunteer will mark the location or section (A - F) where they are sitting The volunteer will have a name tag that looks like the logo above to help the ushers or MC’s find them if there is an emergency.

If there is a medical emergency: 1. Call 911 first and report the emergency 2. Find the Medical volunteer and direct them to person with the emergency 3. Assist the Medical Volunteer in retrieving the medical equipment from the ushers closet and/or the ministry sign in room. 4. Assist the first responders by guiding them from the parking lot to the person with the emergency.

5. Fill out the proper incident form to report the medical emergency.

Right of Christian Initiation (RCIA)

Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) is the ministry of God’s welcoming embrace symbolized by the Church’s acceptance of new members of the family of Catholic Christians. RCIA is a journey of faith that un-baptized persons as well as baptized persons complete with the help of a sponsor, the catechists, the discernment team, and, above all, on the strength of their own conviction.

RCIA Procession: A procession of the RCIA candidates and their sponsors takes place after the homily. Please see the mass notes to determine if you have an RCIA procession at your mass.

Sacramental Oils

Once a year, in the cathedral of every diocese around the world, the Chrism Mass is celebrated. The Chrism Mass is one of the most solemn and significant liturgies of the Church. During the Mass, Bishop Burbidge will bless three oils:

Oil of Catechumens used for catechumens and infants

Oil of the sick used for anointing the sick

Sacred Chrism used for Baptism, Confirmation, Ordination of Priests, and the Consecration of

All three are basically an olive oil. Chrism spices the air with the scent of a perfume, traditionally balsam. Representatives of our parish receive these oils at the end of the Mass and present them to our community at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday.

The oils are stored in the Ambry which is the small box on the rear wall of the church near the Eucharistic Chapel. The key to the Ambry is the same one that opens the Tabernacle.

The Sexton is responsible for refilling the oil of chrism (Sacred Chrism - SC) the MC places out during baptisms and the confirmation mass. The MC should not have to replenish the oil unless something were to happen with the glass shell. If the need arises, the MC should use a very small amount of the oil so it will last until the next Holy Thursday mass.

Sprinkling Rite

• Check to confirm three brass bowls and aspergilla are on the font and filled with water from the font

• Recruit one man and one woman to be sprinklers when possible

• Review instructions with sprinklers and give them a copy of the instruction page

Instructions for Sprinklers Sign in at the Ministry Sign-In Room. Check the font to make sure that that three bowls and three aspergilla are near the font. Find the other sprinkler and decide with the person which side section you will each sprinkle. (The Presider will sprinkle the center section)

Sprinklers will be in the assembly before mass begins. Please sit close to the baptismal font or wait by the baptismal font credence table. After the greeting, the Presider will bless the water and introduce the sprinkling rite by introducing the Gloria.

When the Presider goes to take his bowl, sprinklers will also take their bowls and begin to sprinkle. The usual pattern is a figure 8: i.e., up the center-side aisle, across the back and down an outside aisle, up the center-side aisle again, across the back and down the other outside aisle. You have the length of the singing of the Gloria to complete the Sprinkling Rite. When finished, please empty your bowl of water and return it to the ledge by the steps (not to the font).

A few helpful hints for effective sprinkling:

When sprinkling, remember that it’s all in the wrist! A good tennis lob over the heads of the assembly is what you want. NEVER sprinkle in their faces. God’s grace is to be experienced falling gentle upon us from above… not hitting us in the face.

Have fun. Enjoy extending this blessing to your brothers and sisters in faith. Thank you!

Streamer Bearers

Streamer Bearers are used infrequently at some special masses and will normally have a person to coordinate the Gathering and Sending procession at these masses.

MC’s should work with the coordinator to confirm each streamer bearer understands the procedures.

Gathering Procession • The procession at the start of mass may vary depending on the number of streamer bearers.

• A group of four streamer bearers will generally move down the center aisle before the cross bearer to lead the procession.

• The streamer bearers should stay about eight rows apart as they swing their streamer in a figure 8 pattern in front of them and move at a slow pace.

• Once they reach the altar, the steamer bearers continue down the side of the altar towards the credence tables in an alternating fashion.

• The first streamer will move to the ambo side, the second to the baptismal side, the third to the ambo side, and the forth streamer will go to the baptismal side.

• The Steamer bearer should then lean their streamers up in the corner against the wall near the doors to the back hallway.

Sending Procession • Streamer bearers should line up after communion near the credence tables and retrieve their streamers as the wait for the final blessing. (2 on each side)

• When the music starts for the Sending hymn, a streamer bears from each side will start moving along the altar while swinging their streamer in the figure 8 pattern. Once the first group is approaching the front of the altar, the second group of streamer bearers (one from each side) follows in the same manner.

• When they reach the front of the altar, they continue up the outside aisle on the side they are on. They do not move up the center aisle where the Presider and altar servers are exiting. The Sending procession is a faster pace then used for the Gathering procession. Streamer bearer should try to maintain good spacing and may have to shorten up their swing arch as people leave their seats and move into the aisles.

Ash Wednesday

Ashes after Mass: One MC should stay after the mass and offer ashes to people who arrived after ashes were completed. This usually is necessary at the 5:30pm mass because of parishioners work schedule and traffic at that time. Let the ushers know you will be offering ashes after mass.

Handout for Ash Wednesday Thank you for agreeing to be an Ash Distributor on Ash Wednesday. Please arrive in plenty of time to stop by the Ministry Sign-in room (located to the left of the church doors as you are facing the doors to walk in) to sign in. There will be a sign in sheet with the ash distributor stations. Please put your name down on the station you prefer and this will help us to know if everyone has arrived. You will be provided with a wet wipe to clean your hands when you have finished distributing the ashes. Keep this at your seat for when you return from distributing.

During the mass/service: • When the Presider walks to the table where the ashes are located, please go immediately to line up similar to communion time. If you are distributing ashes on the ambo side of the church, you should stand on that side. If you are distributing ashes on the baptism side of the church, you should stand on the baptism side.

• The Presider will bless the ashes and start to mark the ministers of the ashes. Come forward to the Presider as you do for communion. After you have been marked you will pick up a bowl of ashes from the table, then go to your station.

• For ministers distributing ashes on the side wings, when you are finished with your side, if there is room, move to the front to assist.

• After distribution to the assembly is complete, return your bowl to the table and return to your seat.

Words to use: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return”

OR

“Repent, and believe in the gospel”

Again, thank you for your service to our community.

God bless!
