Meanwhile, the President’s son Gibran Rakabuming Raka won Solo’s mayoral election in Central Java. In South Tangerang, Banten, all three mayoral candidates have family ties with established elites. Many observers have therefore deemed these local elections as a perpetuation of “dynastic politics”. • Bobby’s victory in Medan is especially interesting since President Jokowi did not win here in the 2019 presidential election. A key factor could be the rapprochement between Jokowi and Prabowo after the 2019 election, resulting in Bobby’s candidacy being backed by parties in the governing coalition at the national level, while his rival was aligned with the weaker and fragmented opposition parties. Voters who previously supported Prabowo’s cause became less averse to voting for Bobby. • Bobby’s campaign clearly benefited from his personal link to the President’s family.

Jakarta, Indonesia Email: [email protected] Abstract : This study was conducted to compare the capital owned by candidates from political dynasties in the 2020 mayor and deputy mayor elections and make a generalization about which capital turns out to be the most influential in the election. The study is a comparative research which uses the Large-N, a method that compares cases in a broad area and a large number, with 28 candidates from political dynasties as the objects. The conclusion of this study is that the dynasties owned by candidates do not seem to mean much in the 2020 mayor and deputy mayor elections. The victories of candidates from political dynasties were influenced by various combinations of capital. No capital is more influential than other capital because ownership of capital will not mean much if the candidate does not have a good enough strategy in using that capital to attract voters. The focus was instead on the contests in Jawa and Sumatera. • In Kalimantan Selatan, the gubernatorial contest was between incumbent Haji Sahbirin Noor, who paired with his former rival Haji Muhidin; and Denny Indrayana and Difriadi Drajat. The Sahbirin-Muhidin pair had always been the favorites to win, having received backing from more political parties and rich businesses than their rivals. • During the campaign, the Denny-Rifdiadi team lodged several complaints against their opponent to the local election commission for breaching electoral regulations laws. The main complaint was that Sahbirin took advantage of his position as incumbent to garner votes, including claiming credit for nationwide Covid-19 aid distributed to the masses.

One of them is the allegations related to the practice of nepotism conducted by the President's family. Many news reports have emerged related to the existence of the phenomenon. Therefore, this study aims to find out how the representation of nepotism behavior contained in the illustration on the cover of TEMPO Weekly News Magazine issue of December 10, 2020 entitled "Keluarga Berjaya" related to the phenomenon of participation of two members of the Presidential family in the 2020 elections. This study used qualitative methods with semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes models to explore denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings. As a result, some of the objects contained in the illustration have a pseudo meaning, especially in the object of rice and cotton emblems that contain the meaning of justice and prosperity. When viewed from the events that occurred and the track record of the President's performance to date, many assumptions that arise related to the purpose of the concept of justice and prosperity itself, whether for the public at large or for certain circles only.

The study's objective is to analyze the causes of high political costs in regional head elections in Indonesia and the steps to reform the regional election system in the future. The study used a qualitative-descriptive method with a desk study technique, namely examining data sourced from literature and regulations and those related to the elections. The study found that political costs are high in regional head elections because, first, oligarchs control political parties because of the party's power to recruit candidates. In practice, recruiting candidates by political parties and coalitions of political parties are closed, elitist, and undemocratic. Party elites or oligarchs have the power to select and determine candidate pairs to fight in the regional elections. The nomination of candidates is not an arena for contesting capacities and capabilities, but rather an arena for capital struggle, popularity, and closeness to oligarchs or political party elites. Second, there are loopholes in regulations that open up space for high-cost politics, namely (1) a centralized nominating system; (2) Requirements for nomination at the political party level are too high and (3) The requirements for nomination by independent candidates are too stringent.

Made’s research focus is on Indonesian politics, civil-military relations, and ethnic/identity politics and he is also a free-lance journalist. 1 ISSUE: 2021 No. 18 ISSN 2335-6677 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • The regional elections in Solo held on 9 December 2020 attracted much attention because President Jokowi's first son, Gibran Rakabuming, ran for mayor with the support of PDIP, which controls 60% of the seats in the local parliament. • In nominating Gibran, PDIP sacrificed its local candidate Achmad Purnomo, the incumbent vice maJor who had long served the party’s grassroots. Initially, Gibran faced resistance from the local party apparatus, but clinched the nomination with endorsement from party chief Megawati Sukarnoputri and provincial party officials. Gibran rallied a large coalition and secured support from all political parties in the local parliament (40 out of 45 seats) except for the Islamist party, PKS. • Following Gibran’s nomination, an independent candidate pair, Bagyo Wahyono and FX Suparjo, emerged to challenge him. These two were largely unfamiliar faces in Solo, with little prospect of withstanding Gibran's political machine, backed as it was by Indonesia’s most powerful politician.

Joko Widodo’s alias, Jokowi, is the President of the Republic of Indonesia 2014-2019. He will re-join the 2019 presidential election, while Prabowo Subianto is a challenger who is supported by the Gerindra Party and the Prosperous Prosperity Party. The analytical method uses the semiotic concept of Strauss and John Fiske, who view the video as a sign system. The sign system is parsed through five political codes: lifestyle, transfer of power, existence, ideology and vision. This study finds that, in general, Jokowi’s videos were more visited and preferred than Prabowo’s videos, but Prabowo excelled in the transfer code of power, existence and ideology. In the video, Jokowi tends to impress himself as a person who has several characters. As the President of Indonesia, Jokowi displays a diligent character. As a political activist, Jokowi reinforces his ideology as a nationalist. As a citizen, Jokowi imitates the figure who adheres to the values of tradition As a man, Jokowi impressed himself as a humanist. Prabowo tends to feature a lavish lifestyle with equestrian sport with a historical background of the descendants of an economic Democrat Prof Sumitro Djojohadikusumo and associates himself like Soekarno.
