Club News

Put your feet up and read about all that is happening at BYSC!!

• I am pleased to report that the club has hired a grounds assistant. Randy Hannold is very skilled. Randy, Chuck and vol- unteers are starting to make some headway on backlogged projects. I will still be calling for volunteers . Keep your eyes open for emails as projects come online. • Thanks to John Potter and helpers, the kitchen cabinets are in place and he will soon install pantry shelving. As I write this message, Marilyn Marino and Abbey Newton are in the kitchen filling the cupboards. This will complete kitchen work for this spring. • New fans with lights have been installed on the porch. One remote controls all fans and built-in dimmer lights. The re- mote is located next to the wall switches. Please return the remote to its holder. It has a tracking device, so don’t take it home. • We are starting to recycle. A bin is located behind the bar and in the kitchen. We will recycle clean glass, aluminum cans plastic containers, paper and carboard. • The BYSC dumpster and recycling bins are for club use only. Do not bring trash or recycling from home. • It was noticed at the last few Sunset Fridays that some members were enjoying the food, but did not bring any to share. Some members who brought food last Friday to share did not get any. Members are not required to bring food, but must do so if they plan to eat.

Private Rentals • When members and non-members rent club facilities such as the cook shed, pool pavilion, oyster area, porch and clubhouse, they have exclusive use of designated area (s). Unfortunately some members have not been respect- ing this and some private events have been disturbed. To inform members, we will post signs asking members not to use enter specific facilities. If the clubhouse is rented, members and visitors will need to use the restrooms in the pool house. The pool house is open year-round and 24 hours a day. Thank you for helping the club respect special events that take place at the club.

Pool Opens April 21 • Thanks to volunteers the pool will soon open. This early in the season there are no lifeguards on duty.

"AH, THE SAILING LIFE"

"Ah, The Sailing Life" is the theme we are using for the 2017 Lowcountry Regatta. You will see it on competitor shirts and banners.

It was chosen as way for BYSC to join the movement in sailing to renew sailing as a sport. Like golf many sports find themselves suffering from reduced participation. Causes range from the "financial crisis" to competition with other sports that can be done by individuals. Family costs for children sport activities have sky rocketed. Family time has become a scarce commodity.

Family sailing is thought to be a way clubs like ours can do their part. Last year, if you attend- ed the Lowcountry Regatta you would have seen many more young people sailing as compared to adults. I would guess 10 children to 1 adult. That is amazing!

The problem comes later when young folks who have learned to sail, enjoy racing but do not carry the sport into adulthood. Or they are proficient sailors who take courses at charter companies to charter boats. Sailing is not like riding a bike, once you can do it you always can, but it is pretty close. A refresher in sailing is all that is required to get back on the water. "After all, in sailing it’s not the going out, it’s the ability to get back".

When that is accomplished, "Ah, The Sailing Life" is thought and heard.

Aquarius is ketch rigged, designed by John Alden and built by Pearson in Bristol RI in 1969. She's been well taken care and can easily carry 4 crew. I'm looking for someone that has experience in sailing large sailboats, offshore experience would be a plus. The schedule is weather permitting and right now we intend to stay outside the Gulf Stream and come straight down taking about 2 weeks (again weather permitting) or longer depending on schedules and time available.
